I had originally not wanted to see [Galaxy Quest] because I heard that it was making fun of Star Trek and then Jonathan Frakes rang me up and said "You must not miss this movie! See it on a Saturday night in a full theatre." And I did and of course I found it was brilliant. Brilliant. No one laughed louder or longer in the cinema than I did, but the idea that the ship was saved and all of our heroes in that movie were saved simply by the fact that there were fans who did understand the scientific principles on which the ship worked was absolutely wonderful. And it was both funny and also touching in that it paid tribute to the dedication of these fans. - Patrick Stewart (Jean-Luc Picard on TNG)

One of the best Star Trek movies ever made. It's more a love letter to the fans than a straight parody. ... I didn't see it in your reaction, but one of my favorite lines was Sigourney's "Ducts; why is it always ducts?" in an obvious reference to Alien. They mixed the original series and the Next generation together, as well as some of the other ST series. For example, Seven of Nine from Voyager was famous for being stuck in skin tight cat suits. William Shatner was always doing shoulder rolls, and frequently lost his shirt. Alexander Dane reminds me equally of Spock, Worf, and Captain Picard (can't escape his character, known for his catchphrase "Today is a good day to die", a respected Shakespearean actor). ... The time span between the original series and the revived Galaxy Quest was 18 years, which was the time from the end of the original Star Trek to the debut of The Next Generation. Coincidence? Fun Fact: Guy's scream in the pod room was unscripted. Sigourney's reaction was genuine surprise. Also, Guy was a reference to the original ST, where some unknown crewman died, as Guy said, to emphasize the danger. These poor souls became known as redshirts, as nearly every one who died in a landing party wore a red shirt. JJ Abrams included the gag in his 2009 movie. Of the three crew who space jumped to the drilling platform, the crewman in the red suit died.
@mikejankowski6321
@mikejankowski6321 Жыл бұрын
Your references got caught in the blender. Worf was the one with the "good day to die" while Picard's was "make it so". But yes, a British guy with a headpiece as an intellectual (Doctor) alien. Great stuff! The best, fastest red shirt death was on Capella IV in Friday's Child...so classic.

@@michaelccozens what are you talking about? And what's "sly" about not knowing who a mega obscure guy is, and then calling someone out for wasting everyone's time by replying to tell me to Google it. I don't go on social media to Google things. If I ask it's because I want to know what he means to YOU, (Google won't tell me that) or this case HIM, you know, the actual human being who thought it was important enough to bring it up, but was too self important to way why. So since I was more curious than I was annoyed, I did Google it... aaand... I got a few sterile passionless articles that made me care even less about him and did little to help understand why I should care what Mamet thought about anything. Which is disappointing because I love Galaxy Quest, and Star Trek, and good stories... but not rude a-holes who don't want to be bothered to explain their own comments. Maybe one day I'll discover the real reason to know more about, and care about David Mamet. That day isn't here yet, unfortunately.

And Alan Rickman's character had a headpiece that gets progressively beat up as the last half goes on.

When this movie came out I didn't watch it because it looked silly and I thought "oh they are just riding on the coat tails of Star Trek" It wasn't until years later a friend at work convinced me to give it a shot and I realized what a great parody of so many things. The ego of actors, the whole fandom conventions, and of course Star Trek and other such movies and series. I loved it, still do! I think its funny how Sigourney Weaver's outfit becomes progressively more torn up and revealing as the drama intensifies. Much like the Captain losing his shirt on the first planetary landing. This movie is such a classic and I feel foolish for waiting so long to see it and appreciate it's genius.

I think one of the reasons this movie was so good was of all the character development: Jason learned to be a leader, and that it's not all about him. Alexander learned that, even though _he_ thought his role was silly... it actually _meant_ something to the audience. Mathesar developed into a real leader. Guy got over his fear and became a participating crew/cast member. Gwen learned to stop obsessing about how trivial her role was, and _made_ it non-trivial (notice how at the end she's telling Jason what the computer is saying... but we can't hear the computer...) Fred got his mojo back...

9:09 He is very stoned. Originally in the script he was stoned out of his mind through most of the film. You see a bit of smoke when he transports of the ship and he's eating snacks all the time.

Exactly, there were some deleted scenes that showed it more but they left it out to be a more “family friendly” movie I believe.

One of the greatest Star Trek films of all time. That is the kind of love shown this film by those who are fans of the actual series. On it's own, it's a great film worthy of the praise it now receives. Great reaction to this gem.

Such a beautiful tribute and loving parody at the same time. There are so many "moments" in this movie that it would take quite a while to list them all, but others have done their favorites. It's funnier if you watched Star Trek, but it is also fun and entertaining even if you didn't. It's a movie that, wisely, they didn't try to create a sequel. It could have never measured up, and they probably have difficulty reassembling the cast. Every actor played their character to the absolute pinnacle, and it fit together like a perfect jigsaw puzzle. A genius work of art.

Tim Allen's dis is based on an appearance of William Shatner on Saturday Night Live. He appeared on a skit where he is at a Star Trek convention, and after watching the people dress up as different characters and quoting lines from the show, he said: "Get a life, people."

I loved this movie! It’s basically a sci-fi version of The Three Amigos, actors who are mistaken for the heroic characters that they portray, they get into a difficult real life situation and end up saving the day after all. 😂. Love all of your reactions!! Have a great week! 😁

Came here specifically to find someone who commented this and click like. 3 Amigos was one of my favorite movies growing up, and Galaxy Quest joined it immediately as soon as it came out. They're both wonderful homages to their specific genres.

9:08 Addie goes: "He is very calm". Addie has a good eye. What many people doesn't know and I just learn a few years ago is Tony Shalhoub's character is supposed to be high the whole movie. I noticed his weird behavior but I just thought he was awkward. The rest of the movie is not short in awkwardness anyway. The parts where he is smoking were cut from the movie to get a PG rating. But if you pay attention you can see tiny bits of smoke around him in some scenes. Also there was cursing that was cut or dub-over to get the PG rating.

Fun reaction, Addie. I just watched the movie, recently, and enjoyed it. I really like how it parodies Star Trek, based on the aesthetic and concept. I totally agree with you that the Thermians (the alien species in the movie) are very wholesome. And speaking of wholesome, your movie reactions are very wholesome which is why you are my all-time favorite KZfaqr who does movie reactions and why I joined your Patreon, back in July.

The "real" Protector's bridge was built on a giant gymbal moved with hydraulic rams so that the director could randomly send the entire set crashing three feet in any direction he wanted. So instead of "acting" like the ship was being hit by missiles by throwing themselves around on cue, their reactions were genuine as they hung on or crawled on the ground wondering when the entire set was going to come crashing down on top of them.

Brent Spiner & Patrick Stewart, LCDR Data & Captain Piccard in the Next Generation, went to the premiere. When it was over Spiner told Stewart "that was Star Trek movie we should have made" As for the ham acting, watch ANY of the original series, you'll understand! LOL The bathroom scene where the commander heard his fans mocking him actually happened to William Shatner the original Captain Kirk. This is one of my favorite movies

This nails so many things about fandom in general even outside of Star Trek Trekkie/Trekker stuff. But as one myself it of course especially nails that aspect down perfectly, as well as the lives of the people on these shows and the convention circuit. It’s great stuff. Watching it in a theatre with friends and family who are also fellow Star Trek fans surrounded by others who weren’t was absolutely a great experience, especially because we were laughing the hardest and everyone else thought we had lost it completely.
