I have to say that there was a lot of details and bokeh on the FX6 when shooting details inside of the car. But I was honestly damn impressed over the S23 Ultra preformance when you did the night shooting. It's insane how far phone cameras have come in just a decade. Incredible.

As a smartphone videographer myself, the biggest issues I face is actually not the image quality, it's things like phone overheating, no major depth of field, lack of convenient features like focus peeking, etc. 🙂

Omg I love how you guys put on the thick accent when you're messing around, The depth of field in the Sony shots felt, for me, a little to tight... It took a moment to realize what I was looking at. I honestly guessed half wrong. As per usual your videos are amazing and I'm jealous of your skills!

Excellent video, thank you! I think a lot of people (who aren't camera geeks/nerds) would actually prefer a lot of the S23 shots. I probably need to update from my S21 Ultra, which definitely doesn't measure up.

That's crazy because when the s21 came out I was jealous of how good the cameras were to my note 20 ultra then I got the 22 ultra but this 23 fixed a lot that was wrong with the others

The step up in video quality from my old Exynos S21 Ultra to my new S23 Ultra has astonished me @Hammerhaus Kennel. No more of that rampant low light and shadow noise and even complete detail dropout. I found my S21 Ultra a brilliant phone overall don't get me wrong, but that video was awful at times and soft looking at best. The 23U has crisp vibrant detail, playback is buttery smooth and it's indoor and low light video is marvelous. This all matters more to me than the big Megapixel thing. 👍

After looking at a bunch of footage and stills samples on the internet, I still see a bit of the oversharpening in the 23Ultra that I don't love, so I guess I'm going to try a Pixel 7 Pro for the moment and see how that is. From what I see on the youtube, it looks to produce images that are a bit more natural looking to my eye. If I don't love it, I'll try something else. Interestingly, I found footage from the latest Xiaomi phone that looks really good, but that doesn't seem to be something we have here in the USA.

a few months ago we made the decision not to buy a professional camera and continue to record everything with a phone. we "only" changed the phone from the average 150€ phone to the Samsung S22. (it wasn't 23 yet). We are delighted. we heartily recommend. and you always have it in your pocket ;)

As Oli mentioned, if you show film shot on Galaxy phone to average person, like his mom - they will like it better than from pro camera. I personally think the phone movie technology and movie A.I. in-phone processing - is future of video-making. Great post, Peter !

I wonder if people are still making those really fancy customised cages that allow smartphones like the S23 or even Sony's Xperia i-Pro to mate with a high-end cinema lens, matte boxes, grips and even electronic VNDFs. That would honestly have been crazy cool to mess around with to see the kinds of results that come out of it.

I never write comments.. But! Today we had a room full of professional cinematographers and casuals (that have no idea about cameras or videography) together and we all watched this video. First off, most people in the room decided the S23 looked better in a majority of clips. Reasons: FX6 was too shallow depth of field and made most images look soft, lacking color or clarity. The blacks in the S23 were deep and clean, Fx6 looked washed out and lacking in DR. Detail seemed way better on the 23 as well. As someone who owns a Fx6 and 9, I think the comparison could have been done better in terms of matching grade or f stop, but think it was a great overall test. In conclusion, as most of us watching this video are cinematographers.. I dare you to share this with someone who is not in the film industry and let them decide. In our room, even with film pro's the phone won most of the time. What a time to be alive!

Smartphones are fantastic devices to have in your pocket for anyone with an interest in learning or just developing a passion for photography or videography. My S23 Ultra is fantastic in both areas and I love the device to bits but it could NEVER match what a skilled photographer can produce with a professional standard camera. It isn't meant to. It can come shockingly close in some areas though, and if I was a pro photographer or videographer I would always ensure I had a device like the S23 Ultra in my pocket for those moments that I want to capture when I didn't have my pro camera on me.

I just bought one and I’m getting really muddled audio out of it, it’s not as clear and crisp as yours seems to be. Nice video! I was amazed by the performance of smartphone camera. I think the point is that smartphone enables people no matter whether they are pros or not to capture incredible moments in their lives. Thanks to AI photography, the image quality has taken a giant step forward. And I think that could be one of the reasons why smartphones were called "smart".

I have the s22ultra and it just amazing the quality it can produce if you take the time to set it up correctly, it makes you question the 10,000 price tag of the cinema camera, is the difference worth 8,500??? Great job with the comparison, I would imagine in 5 years time phones will probably have the edge ! 👍

This was very interesting. Initially I would think the difference would be greater in low light due to the small sensor in the mobile phone. But in one of the low light shots I actually preferred the S23, and in another it felt like a close comparison. Day shots was like night and day (ha, pun intended). Depth of field was not even comparable and made S23 look very cheap and amateur-like.

Of course the Fx6 BUT you should have use the portrait mode for video to match it more. The biggest downside...NO 25 and 50fps? I didn't know before.

The phone looks pretty good and sharp, but the color gave it away. The phone was over sharpened vs the Sony. It really is amazing where cameras in phones are going. Great video! Looking forward to your next videos 😄 A little Biased maybe, just a little.......also very jealous LOL.

One of the major drawbacks that I continue to see with smart phones is an inability to control the shot. Because most of the image is generated via computing power and not capturing the light of the image, you can’t control what you want to be processed and what you want to be kept raw. Example of this is, when the headlights are being filmed at night, the phone eliminates the lens flares whereas the lens flares are kept with the FX6. I foresee this is being a permanent limitation in smart phones, as it is going to be almost impossible to tell the smart phone what you want to be able to keep in the shot in what you want to eliminate, versus being able to control that manually with a cinema camera.

S23 Ultra has Pro mode, where you can control the white balance, ISO and shutter speed, and so there is some manual control, if you want that.

I bet you give me a phone like this and I will make you a better film than anybody with a real cinema camera. First of Bokeh is used wrongly by all of youtube. Most movies have very few shots with some nice hardcore bokeh. Plus... they did not use any lense on the phone or nd filter with which you can control even more. Add some grain in post and I bet you a 1000 dollars you wouldn't be able to tell a difference. I know I sure wouldn't be able to notice it.

The footage you chose was crazy lol... phone got like 3 stops of dynamic range VS 12 stops with the fx6 lol.. plus Tf was the focus doing .. no way that was a sony lens with autofocus. Phone sensor looks ok when viewing it from another phone but cant hold up being stretched to the size of a motion picture theater..

watching on a 1080 computer and streaming 1440... i had a difficult time distinguishing the two in the night shots. daylight was much easier

This is the best I've seen the S23 do against a pro rig. In fact, I preferred it on most of the shots. The big downsides are less versatility overall, no depth of field/bokeh (fake bokeh sucks), no RAW, less real dynamic range (although AI does a pretty good job of making up for it). Overall, for content creators who don't need lotsa bokeh, tough to go wrong with the S23.

If you ask normal people and not camera geeks, the majority of them will prefer the out of the box ready photos of the s23. Which is insane. If you are on a trip and you are taking hundreds or thousands of pictures, you wont have time to go and edit each one to make it look good. Not to mention the convenience of lens switching, low light performance etc of the phone, the result will be the phone producing better pictures than a professional camera that is freaking huge making you sore from carrying it all day as well as costing several times more. Insane we got to this point. Obviously for professional shooting, a big ass chunky expensive set up will be suited better for the purpose it was designed for.

I dunno about everyone else, but I can always see the difference between a smartphone and even an old DSLR. Smartphones use all kinds of tricks to get the footage to look the way it does and even with these 'cinematic' modes being added to them, they'll never beat a good eye behind even a semi-decent camera. Interesting to see where that market is pushing, though. It's super useful having a quick B-roll camera in your pocket

please, please, please make a comparision of the s23 ultra vs a camera on a closer price bracket(camera and lenses, not just the body), it is no surprise that a full rigged cinema camera at 10k final cost produces better video than a 1.2k phone. would be far more interesting to see how it compares to a cheaper camera more people might be using

@@PeterLindgren1 idk, smartphones already surpassed point and shoot cameras, or most of them. Still think would be interesting to see what kind of pro or semipro camera with wide angle and tele lens can be bought with a similar budget as a flagship phone and see how big the gap still is

A real video or true cinema camera always beats a phone. The phones lens flare at 6:04mins looks like an old school video camera. phone shutter rate looks too high for the snow. I don't think I would ever shoot with a phone for project. It just makes it look like your shooting on a ENG camera 1/2 inch sensor. not worth it TBH.

Is it just me or S23 Ultra video looks a lot better then sony camera. It gives great colors, focus and sharpness while Sony seems to blur video too much and on wrong spots when filing steering wheel and car badge 4:02

... myself, I would be more careful when using the word "AI"; mostly, the "thing in the background" which is helping us to do different things better these days is not actually an AI, it is still an advanced "learning" computer algorithm. AI is something a lot different. I understand that many people use this term to name this "advanced algorithm" with this abbreviation, because it is short : AI. But, it is not an A.I. actually, we all know that, right ...

The depth of field really gives away the cinema camera. It would be really interesting to mount a proper lens Infront of the phone's camera. I think that would make it way harder to hell the difference.
