Samsung’s hot new Galaxy Z Flip costs almost $1400 and comes with an amazing glass folding screen and… brushes?? That’s right, brushes-little fibers lining the hinge that Samsung says help prevent dust particles from getting inside and damaging the display.
Here’s the thing though-if you actually buy a Z Flip and turn it on, Samsung warns you that the phone is NOT DUST-RESISTANT and that you should keep it away from small particles, which seems problematic if you live on planet Earth.
It seems like dust might be this phone’s Kryptonite-so we gave it a fatal case of bright purple dust contamination, and then tore it down to investigate.
Starting at midnight PST, check out the full teardown to find out how it scored on our repairability scale:

tommy d u b b s dust that is way finer than dust that you can find in your home and in much larger quantities, Samsung never said this phone was dust resistant so you’re failing it on something it’s not even supposed to pass? The bristles are JUST in case, it was clearly not a guarantee. So unless you’re just dropping your phone in dry soil constantly, then it won’t even be a problem

There is some serious click bait here. You used a coloring powder. More specifically, you used Avid-Glow purple colored powder. This powder is used to dye plastics, acrylics and resin as well as paints. It is also made of a compound known as strontium aluminate, which has a high hardness and is not at all comparable to typical lint and dust particles. (Which is why when you opened the phone, it made that awful cracking sound. Not even a large bag full of microscopic lint would ever damage your phone like that, as typical dust and lint isn't that abrasive.) That specific color of powder is 30-50 microns. To put that into perspective, a human hair is about 100 microns in diameter. The average lint particles from your pocket would most likely be larger than these particles, and would be exposed in a much smaller quantity over time. A TRUE test would be exposing a smaller quantity of particles at an appropriate size and hardness over a period of time. This test came to no solid conclusion other than "You can in fact break a phone with a large amount of fine abrasive powder." Edit: This comment was polarizing in an interesting way. It always fascinates me how some people enjoy facts and critical thinking, while others are appalled by it. I don't believe I was nit picking, as this is a new technology and it's important for people to truely get a grasp of it's ACTUAL strengths and weaknesses.

Furthermore, this test is absolutely ridiculous because putting even a normal non-flip phone in a bag filled with this fine purple power is likely to cause severe damage. This fine powder particle is small enough to get into the charging/USB ports/Mic/speaker grills or into any small crevices between buttons on any device. And as Chastin gray pointed out, why not perform a more reasonable test where you expose it to a more realistic particle quantity/size in a practical setting as supposed to submerging the phone into a bag of powdered purple dog shit? Not one electronic would survive this "dust test." Click bait is click bait.

This is the best analysis thus far. It does remain to be seen if the hinge is designed in such a way to be self clearing of small particles over time or not though. Even the softer synthetics and natural fiber can only be compressed so far before they would impinge the hinge.

I would call it a 8.5/10 for a fold compare to others. First off they used a paint compound material that is impossible to stop. Even laptops get dirt stuck in the hinge (look at other comments for details) also it IS folding glass but with a protective Layer
@Roninkinx
@Roninkinx 4 жыл бұрын
@@altoic1 But laptop hinges don't break from dust. If it did it should be fully sealed away from possible dust. Cellphones and iPhones have such a seal though I know that it is much harder they need to figure this out. If the Achilles heel is something that can happen (Dust comes in every shape and size some microscopic as well.) then it needs to be fully sealed as best as possible.. Perhaps this is the best possible seal for now, if it is then we need to rethink how a "Folding" cellphone should be and go with a simpler solution such as just two screens...I really really really want a folding phone but I don't want to chance it when even though it is particles like that, still can break the phone.

No indeed. This test is a dramatic acceleration of the scenario of owning a phone for several years, pocket lint, dust and all. By starting with a worst case scenario, you set a realistic expectation for the worst thing that everyday wear and tear could do to a device. If the Z Flip and its hinge had survived that test, consumers would have one less thing about which to worry. However, because it failed, consumers need to weigh the risk of damaging their Z Flip through prolonged use. I've had pieces from loads of devices with moving parts give out on me over the years: phone cases, keyboards, switches, laptop hinges... you get the idea. I'd rather know the worst that could happen when a hinge meets dust and lint before I buy that hinge. Wouldn't you?

It is totally consumers' choice of whether to buy or not, but you can't expect perfect products that overcame all technological and physical limits at this point of time.

“Alright, we’re gonna test how durable this car is by running it over with a tank, then calling an airstrike on it. Wow, look at that, it’s not starting up, well, this is shit, don’t buy it, not recommended as a daily driver” Next time, maybe go a bit more granular on the dust ingress. Unless I’d been buried at a beach, my pockets wouldn’t be anything like what was in that ziplock, and the stuff that does build up in them is nearly always fibres of fabric, not tiny crushed rocks. As such, this test is meaningless to see how well it’d resist everyday ingress and how good it is at cleaning itself, as by killing the hinges from the start you don’t allow it to function as intended. There’s a big difference between doing something that’s designed to simulate extended use of a product in a short time, and outright killing the thing. “We need to test this engine for its ability to filter detritus from the fuel, and we need to simulate a lifetime of filtration as quick as possible, we did the math and over 10 years a car gets x amount of garbage in its fuel, so let’s just pour that much junk in the fuel tank right now, oh look at that, it’s the entire capacity of the fuel tank, oh well, it’s a realistic yet accelerated simulation of the ageing process, right?” Your tests are useless to the point that they make the new design seem worse than the first generation, despite all the objective improvements. Between this and absolute misrepresentation of what apple was actually doing with iPhone battery replacements, these videos are starting to look more and more like tabloid clickbait every day. Shame, I always liked ifixit for, well, the community repair guides, but they were, naturally, from the community. Official teardowns have also gone from giving informative information on the technology and construction methods of products to simply seeing how easy it is to get all the bits apart and calling it quits there. At least you haven’t done away with labelling all the important IC’s on the main PCB’s, well, yet at least.

3/10 tho the dust test was a bit over the top it appeared to be a very well constructed phone with certain parts easier to replace/repair. Screen removal/repairs appear to be a pain in the bum.

It's refreshing to see someone do a proper teardown which actually is of some use to the viewer. I'm only furious that the first slot in my search results was taken up by a moron messing around with Moss picks.

I bought a new Flip-Fone Z3 when they came out and about 6 months into it dust and tiny bits of grit had got into the crease via the hinges and scratched the glass along the crease....Samsung replaced the screen and I got rid of the fone...heartbroken as I truly loved the fone!...until they convince me otherwise, I wont be buying another one - :(

Love you guys but seriously, a video telling me to watch another video later? What's up with milking the views for two videos for one device? First time I've disliked one of you videos, you're better than that so please do better next time.

Once manufacturers finally figure out, how to seal the whole god damn phone with hinges and whatnot, only then will folding phones become the big thing. Until then, I am pretty happy with my standard phone without any mechanical elements. This phones seems to be pretty easy to take apart. Knowing, that there is nothing about resistency against anything, I am pretty confident I could easily take it apart and put it back together again, not worrying too much about replacing batteries or anything that might break.

I cant do a flip phone... to many reasons to fail... I had a Samsung s6 for 4 years and never had a problem other than the lack of updates it worked fine I doubt a flip would last half the time

you guys need to show how you put stuff back together as well. I bet it doesn't look right because of how difficult it is to take it apart. not your fault but it's just impossible to repair this stuff, I followed the guide for my Galaxy buds because they got plugged up and completely destroyed one because it was impossible to put back together just because all the components were so small and for some reason it doesn't fit back together after opening it even using an I fix it kit and being very careful

Give it a 3 Pros: Easier to repair than RAZR. Waterproofed motherboard. Cons: Still not dust resistant. Bottom battery is super glued. Top layer of display is plastic. Comment more stuff

Steve Jobs was right years ago, the flip phones with those bent displays have huge technological challenges. He is still right today. Pay more than 1400,- dollars for a phone with a flip display that will not last too long due to the environment is crazy.

I would not give anything that has glued glass, more than RS (reparability score) 3. Just because of how risky it is to glue off this specific part. Why can’t these glass things be hold in place like iPhone screens are connected to phone? It would make life so much easier and safer to deconstruct

Arek R. Plenty can break. He is just an expert at disassembling phones. Look at JerryRigs’s video. When dissembling he actually accidentally broke the motherboard. He also had a hard time removing the bigger battery on the bottom. To be fair his phone was already broken from a previous video.
