It was partly because she did not have much happiness as a wife or mother, she turned out to be a great career woman. She always had that aspect about her even during her happiest days with Philibert though. She was a pioneer for us women. There had been queens regnant and queens consort but that was such a lottery thing for the very few. Margaret's career as a governor/official, even with the help of her blue blood, opened new ideas about the role women could played in male-dominated spheres. She was lucky at that aspect.

Treating the mother of his offspring badly would likely cause trauma and other psychological problems among any children who observed it. Their son Karl/Charles was initially reluctant to marry because he knew about his parents' marital problems and didn't want history repeating itself in his own life. Elizabeth I Tudor did not provide "succession", and Catherine II of Russia was not exactly generous to her over-villified husband nor kind to her son-successor, but those things should not overshadow everything else they did as rulers. By the way, the French-Bourguignon tradition (of which Philip was a heir) provided less space of power/influence for the consort, whose role was replaced largely by the chief minister and the chief mistress (later French Bourbon kings governed the court through their mistresses alot). The heirs were entrusted to male tutors who would give them an education that befitted that style of ruling culture. Not that I am a fan of this, but Philip's problems as a husband were not limited to his individual personality. I've read some Belgian historians like Cauchies (who generally sympathize with Philip - the prince who brought peace and prosperity to their country). From their point of view (and most likely Philip's), Juana simply did not fit into the framework of rulership that Philip knew and exercised, and he just struggled to build an alliance with her. But certainly, this would be a problem either in the Holy Roman Empire or in Spain, where other ruling cultures applied. Aside of that, my view on this is that Juana was by nature was not a politician, who was thrown into a cut-throat world of politicians, who also had strong/dominating personalities. She did not want to be controlled by either Philip or Ferdinand so she tried to rely on one to rein in the other, depending on the situation, but she did not trust them nor plan to work with them as long-term partners . But she did not have a plan nor a frameword of her own either (which would provide a point of bargaining for her men or other potential political partners). Margaret of Austria, when living under the tutelage of his brother, sometimes resisted his plans too. When she was Duchess of Savoy, she pursued an independent policy which was not always compatible with that of Burgundy. But Philip could swallow that and work with her. So like Ferdinand and Charles, even he too could work with women and accept their opinions.

Last year, I watched the first eleven episodes of the season of Korona królów that was about Hedwig of Anjou. After that I didn't find any English subtitles, and my Polish isn't good enough to make sense of the rest. Understanding the phrase "jest król nie królowa" isn't enough.

The king held all decisions and power, so Hedwig's father Ludwik made a deal with Polish nobility to name Jadwiga (Hedwig) as an heir and King of Poland and that was the first leading case in our history. Kazimierz the Great (season 1 & 2) the last king of Piast dynasty could not do it for his daughters, because when he was about to die his first two legal daughters were dead and the other ones from the informal relationship were not acknowledged as the legal heirs by the pope. The most tragic/funniest thing was Kazimierz got many children, because infidelity was his "second" name(he was also a bigamist), but none of them could rule because they did not come from the legal marriage. @@elzbietabetlej4085 You do realise that the consort does not rule at all right? Granted at the time it very much was get married and the man does all the ruling but not always. France had the smart idea of Agnatic-Primogeniture, or Salic Law, which kept things nice and orderly and to my knowledge there were not any Wars of Succession, if you were wondering this is why the Hundred Years War was so stupid. The French response initially was Succession does not go through women, which is true in France but not in Brittany or Spain.

The title of Queen in my country was only a meaningless one as it indicated the spouse of a king. That's all. Many women would be a great rulers if they let them inherit the title to which they had right as an heir of the ruler, someties even first borns.

In the Netherlands Maximilian had no other choice then to appoint her. Margaret and Philip were always considered as autochthonous as a direct bloodline of Mary (Dutchess of Burgundy); Maximilian was always seen as a foreigner and was always in conflict with the Flemish cities and the Estates. She learned the balance of power in the Netherlands and learned it to Charles V, Filips II did not learned that balance what led to the uprising in 1568
