In this video, we're revealing the bait secrets to catching Galjoen! If you're into Galjoen fishing, you won't want to miss this.
The Galjoen goes by a few names - Galjoen (Mostly in the Western & Southern Cape) Dumba (Mostly in the Eastern Cape) Blackfish & Black Bream.
Galjoen can be very tricky to catch at times & can be very fussy feeders, one day only wanting white mussel or matured red bait & the next day only wanting fresh Wonder Worm or Moonshine worm. Even though the Galjoen eats a variety of baits, I prefer the matured red bait, for me matured red bait is the best bait for catching Galjoen and a lot of our other bank fish species such as, Blacktail/Sargo, White Stumpnose, Zebra/5 Finger. And if you fish the right areas even the Red Roman will eat it.
Once an angler manages to outsmart the Galjoen, the art of catching these little speed demons becomes an obsession and the reward for your hard when it pays off is second to none. In this video I reveal some of the bait secrets that I use when targeting Galjoen.
Galjoen can be aggressive feeders pulling you flat without warning and at times they can be very fussy feeders with a few taps and then moving on. The Galjoen is our National fish here in South Africa, The Galjoen size limit is 35cm and bag limit is 2 per person, per day.
The Galjoen feed mainly in turbulant white water, near rocky outcrops. Even though we have caught them in flat and clean water, that is not the norm. They can be found in deeper working holes to literally a few meters off the beach.
