I’ve been watching for the last 50+ years and until this week it never occurred to me that Davros was in a wheelchair. He was just half Dalek.

Errrm I think the controversy isn’t how Davros appears in the sketch but what RTD said in regards to it. Ie: the fact that Davros will now be portrayed fully human from now on. If it was before his accident I think more people would be on board.

I genuine hope we gonna get Mawaan Rizwan into the proper show as some side character. He is always fun to watch. Also finally Julian Bleach without ton of makeup. My man finally could breath a little.

The previous history we had for Davros had him being injured in the war with the Thals (exploded by a Thal bomb, is the most canon version). This is set sometime before the actual 'Genesis of the Daleks', but given that a centeal premise of the show is rewriting time, there's really nothing wrong with Davros being mobile. In fact, it opens up all kinds of possibilities for storytelling that having Davros permanently seated removed.

the Goth Anniversary Children in Need Special! .. this should be good.

As a Children In Need Special, I think this episode is brilliant. 10/10. Seeing Davros "pre injury" was absolutely A O K. No issues, interesting to see him in this different way. If RTD wants to do a whole story with him pre injury - I have no issue with that either, except for the fact it would likely require a massive retcon, and Stephen already did a pretty amazing job with that in The Witch's Familiar. If however RTD plans to bring us Davros as we just saw him - walking about without sign of injury - in a new episode set in a time after Genesis of the Daleks... because of this perceived issue with associating evil with disability... I am totally against. 100%. As a writer, a storyteller, characters - particularly your main protagonist/s - often have some kind of major "problem" which has shaped them into the bubbling ball of hate that they have become. Within the confines of the tv episodes of Doctor Who, we do not know what happened to Davros to make him look like he did in Genesis of the Daleks. I have a vague recollection of reading somewhere however that he was in a building that was bombed by the Thals. It was the Thals that did that to him. The Thals robbed him of the life he once had, and put him into a state of everlasting pain and agony. The Thals robbed him of the ability to walk, and even his sight if it weren't for his own ingenuity to create a 3rd eye. THE THALS! THEY DID IT TO HIM! THEY MADE HIM SUFFER, AND NOW HE WILL CREATE THE VERY MACHINE THAT WILL EXTERMINATE THEM ALL! Take that away, and you likely don't even have any Daleks... (And, not that you've watched it... but take away boiling mud and horrible disfigurement, and you don't have Classic Who's Number ONE story, either.)

He talked about how after regeneration a new man would go sauntering away with his actor, and Crowley has a heck of a saunter (and is Ginger!) He has to get back into the swing of playing a being not of this world who is thousands of years old and lives in an ancient supernatural vehicle, averts the apocalypse by running around talking to people, and is rubbish without his companion.

I don't think it was this Children in Need short in of itself that was controversial. Personally I enjoyed it. But the comments Russell made on Doctor Who unleashed in which he made a clumsy and perhaps misguided statement that Davros somehow maligned disabled people in wheelchairs. And therefore going forward he would not be disfigured and will stand on two legs. Many wheelchair users came out to criticise and felt it was patronising. For one thing Davros never let his condition stop him from achieving his goals. Ultimately he came back many times. I think people are annoyed at change for the sake of change.

So between the ending of Power of the Doctor and this the 14th Doctor has already been on an hour long adventure involving Daleks in a comic called ‘Liberation of the Daleks’

Rule no 1 - RTD lies. He says it's going to be a serious story, not a comedy skit, then it's a comedy skit. Context: I dipped out maybe halfway through Capaldi S01, not because of the legitimately fantastic actor perfectly cast, but it just all felt wrong (writing / directing / 'feel'). Additional Context: I discovered you Gals about a year ago and binged my way right through to where I left off. Found a whole new viewpoint on this thing I've known for my whole life and fell a little bit in love with it again, you're Awesome!!! Even more context: Based on what I've heard about what I 'missed', I feel no great desire to catch up on that gap. All of that being said: I loved everything about this short special. I briefly cringed at the 'used to be a brilliant woman' thing (don't hate me), just a little bit too on the nose but meh such a minor niggle in a nice slice of RTD greatness. And like you said, Children in Need may as well be its own standalone universe. As a lore nerd I'm not sure if it's even possible for me to pick up the new stuff and pretend that Chibnall never happened, but I'm sure in the mood to give it a try.

You know what I just realised? The Doctor could have prevented the Daleks from being created in the first place of he had just crashed the tardis into the whole casing. Then Davros would have had to invent something different for the future of the Kaleds.

I might have been a teeny bit bothered if this had been in the main show, just because it's a bit much to have the Doctor causing just about everything in the Whoniverse (creating the Time Lords, saving Davros, naming the Daleks), but not much, and anyway it's a charity skit! I think people just like to make a fuss. It contradicts some extended universe stories a bit (where Davros definitely created the Daleks after his injury), but it doesn't make them worthless, any more than _Genesis_ made the 1960s Daleks stories worthless. There's a brilliant audio series called _I,_ _Davros_ which goes from when he was a little boy to the creation of the Daleks. If it gets completely contradicted, it'll still be worth listening to...

Someone on one of the Doctor Who Facebook pages suggested that the Doctor saved Davros in the hand mine field, so maybe as a consequence he is fully able to walk now.

I think no matter your opinion, the shitstorm really comes down to the confused explanation of RTD packaged in a BTS show of a 5 min comedy short specifically made for children in need.

So, I've just caught up with Jodie's Doctor and I miss her but I'm so excited for what's next. Also, I'm finally watching along with you two again. Glad to be back here too!

It's a clever little skit for a good cause . It's pre Genesis and I think a lot of parents & teachers would be grateful that the Daleks ended up with a sucker instead of that claw . I can just imagine us kids making them out of kitchen implements , garden tools and other junk . I always thought of Davros as a semi Dalek rather than in a wheelchair , he definitely intended to be leader of his creations . Anyway it's a good funny start to the specials and doesn't affect anything at this stage . The RTD.comments about villains have angered a few very vocal people , but the show has changed a lot over the years with social attitudes and managed to stay relevant . Today is the actual anniversary and I've just watched a coloured version of the original Dalek story , edited to an hour and a half and they did a great job . I feel a lot older but I'm looking forward to the first special on Saturday and hope you both enjoy it .

I didnt give much thought to davros not being in his chair and had no idea why there would even be controversy around it..... and now seeing all the videos crapping on the latest special (and sadly i cant even disagree with the points they are making because they are valid) i had no idea RTD decided evil/bad people being handicap was sending a bad message..... like what? so the problem with davros in a wheel chair was it was painting disabled people in a bad light? not once did anyone ever think that... so disabled people are only capable of being good and righteous? RTD claiming that there is a long history of painting disabled people as evil.... ok? someone doesnt like comic books... dare devil, professor x to name a few and theres many MANY more. kind of mind blown how out of touch that mind set is. RTD needs to consume more content apparently.

I loved the special it was very funny and great to see a little more 14 before we get the specials. The way I'm looking at the whole controversy at the moment is, there's no guarantee we'll be seeing Davros again for a while, and maybe the way RTD intended it was a "lasting image" of Davros if that makes sense.? This is a pre-accident Davros, this is the image of Davros RTD wants us to think about/remember and then we either don't see him for a while/retire the character. But I could have been reading into it wrong. I think ultimately I'm still gonna watch and enjoy the show whatever happens so, nothing really changes for me.

As a comedy skit set before Davros's injury it's amusing and silly but as a canon event and a manifesto on how the character is to be seen going forward it's a dire state of affairs.

The complaints aren’t about the short, which is funny and good and has no issue fitting into the canon. The issue is with RTD explicitly saying Davros will no longer appear “in a wheelchair” at all going forwards as it would “continue to enforce ableist connotations around villains in the history of film making”. And I’m sorry but a show like doctor who literally has hundreds of villains, many recurring and yet the one “disabled” major recurring character is having a major aspect of their appearance radically changed for the meet chance of perceived ableism?! Just seems completely backwards logic to me. I literally cannot think of another major (or minor) humanoid villain on the modern show with a disability and in todays world of increased representation in casting across the board, that seems like a bigger issue than having an actor sit in half a dalek.

I have no problem with this. Just because he says genesis of the Daleks, it doesn't mean THIS was the same as that story. It's made as a fun thing for a charity event, not as anything to take too seriously.

I really enjoy your content but I feel it's worth saying that I hope you made a donation to Children in Need as this sketch is content made for charity. They really do help some amazing causes here in the UK.

RTD said they made this change regarding Davros (even though people have rightfully pointed out this isn't necessarily going against canon yet) because there's a history of depicting disabled people as villainous characters. And that's true, full stop. It's not a matter of debate. But people are blowing it way out of proportion. I think what it comes down to is that people are taking it personally because it's suggesting there was something wrong with Doctor Who before, and they liked Doctor Who before, ergo they're taking RTD's comments as an attack on them. But I'm seeing really petty and juvenile arguments like "what now, disabled people can NEVER play villainous characters?" or "there are plenty of heroic characters in wheelchairs!" And it's ridiculous, same types of arguments we got when they started shedding a light on how it might be problematic for white people to voice characters of color. "What, so now they're limited to only those types of roles?" It's a reactionary strawman argument.

But the “Adlek” is complete. It wasn’t ready in Genesis Of The Daleks. It can’t be a flashback. And RTD confirms, in the behind-the-scenes, that this is the way Davros is now. He says a disabled villain is problematic?!

Tennant's line about canon rupturing hangs a lantern on the issue and gives a perfect excuse to dismiss this episode from official Whoniverse as many do with the Children In Need specials & all of Chibnal's run. RTD's comment that it was a problem to have a villain in a wheelchair during a Children In Need Special is a stretch. That "issue" could easily have been avoided by having a different villain & different plot. A villain being handicapped does not cause people to view all disabled people as villains. A crippled Davros rolling around in a "travel unit" was never an issue. It was a logical technological solution Davros would do, just like his robotic eye to replace his eyes that were also damaged by an attack prior to the events seen in the Tom Baker episode.

Russell said in an interview that davros being in a wheelchair was ableist, because people in wheelchairs can't be evil. And it's not like it was the lower half of a Dalek making Davros half Dalek, already needing the kind of life support system he was designing for future more affected kaleds. No, it was just a gratuitous insult to disabled people carrying no other narrative or symbolic purpose and he's free to retcon away this relic of past insensitivity and permanently erase the disability, which I'm guessing will never be mentioned or represented again.

The controversy is in the reasoning RTD gave. Imagine Missy gets wiped from canon because we don’t want to portray women as potentially being evil. It feels like he said only old white men should be villains

So...let us talk about the handicap-elephant in the room; there is an uproar from a majority of who-fans, who were upset will a declaration from RTD. He stated that Davros will no longer be in his infamous wheelchair, as he (and the other writers who write with him) decided that this Iconic Villain is too problematic and make all wheelchair users seem evil. One fan called Dadros (who is also handicap) was righty upset with both the timing and sensibility of this overreaction. 1) It's not a wheelchair, it is a life support travel machine. 2) If this retcon sticks, there is always millions of flying wheelchair users in the WHO universe, screaming exterminate. 3) Ironically this change smacks of hypocrisy, other "evil" wheelchair users include: Cassandra, John Lumic, and Max Capricorn. All characters I might add, who were created by RTD. Apart from that, the CIN Sketch was OK. Julian Bleech was great with the dry comedy. (every time he said no in an dismissive tone was pitch perfect) 5/10. The story was slight, I wish it picked a tone and stuck with it. A tone of continuity issues as it clashed with DW-GOTD, and RTD's tantrum online both soured and sent up a red flag for a small, short, silly moment for charity, Should had just shown a trailer for the 60th specials with cats, the the Marvels did Russel. Your in your twilight years, surrounded by yes-men. (How could this have been so hard, Moffat made a 10/10 perfect short with the Night of the Doctor, with the same runtime)

I enjoyed it until that Russell T. Davies interview that came after ruined it because we can't have the old Davros anymore because it offends wheelchair users bloody ridiculous it was never a problem until he made it a problem.
