In Lister’s case, yes. Rimmer hasn’t really been shown to be misogynistic in any other episode, so that seems to have been a trait that was invented to make the point. He became more a stand-in for pushy guys in general.

for a show from the 80's written directed and starring all men, about men BEING men surrounded by only other men, Red Dwarf is DEEPLY under appreciated for its sensitivity and achievments, I recall Craig Charles saying in an interview once that it only occurred to them after Red dwarf had become a hit that they had accidentaly become the first BBC show to have a 50% black cast! little things like that make you apprechiate the show for its heart, and the fact that it actually does follow a star trek style morality tale, even if it is punctuated with smeg gags and random dance numbers!, FYI if i remember correctly that song Tounge Tied charted at about 48!

People who say "it's about to get good for the first time" in series 3 weren't there when it was first broadcast. The first 2 series were hugely popular when they came out, especially with young people. In fact, the initial reaction to Series 3 was that the feel of the show had been a little bit spoiled by flashier special effects (and a couple of other important changes which I won't mention because spoilers). It's the Johnny Come Latelys to Red Dwarf (and as the years have gone by, there are naturally more & more of them) who have flooded the net with the idea that Series 1 and 2 aren't as good, because they were (for the most part) introduced to the higher budget and merchandise version, and for them the earlier series' understandably must have looked drab and under-produced in comparison. It's fair to say that in my experience (fan since 1988) people who watched the show from the beginning tend to like the first 2 series' just as much as - if not more than - Series 3-6. That's not to take anything away from the latter series - they're great too.

Seeing as I was born in '91, I obviously wasn't around to watch it all as it was broadcast. But for me the first two series have always been among my favourites, precisely because of the lower budget. Something about the dodgy props, wobbly sets and slightly hammy effects gives it a real charm and character all of its own. And being more restrictive, it was much more character driven, so you really got to know the characters well, before they got dropped into the more elaborate plots and locations of the later series.

I dont really agree, series 1 was funny but a bit stiff, series 2 they were starting to not take themselves seriously and series 3 was when it hit its stride (Then the restored Red Dwarf seasons wernt very good but the specials after that e.g. when they reached Earth and parodied Blade Runner were back to being good again).

The thing I love about this episode is that up to this point it's easy to see Lister as being just easy-going and lazy, but here he's actively getting upset at Rimmer's misogyny. Whether or not he learns from his exposure to the female version of himself, he is already starting from a position of having a fairly modern attitude. This is also highlighted by the fact that he slept with himself. It's not about what he dislikes, it's about what he likes. They were drunk and having fun, so they went with it.

I do love the detail, that the men get pregnant in the parallel universe, because if you break down why there is such a big difference between the genders, both biologically and socially (historically), then it comes down to women carrying the child for 9 months, and men not. So for a female driven society, it makes total sense that it would be the men that are pregnant.
@Swenglish
@Swenglish 9 ай бұрын
Yes and no... All else being parallel, yes, kind of. But the patriarchy as well as the idea of family units would probably not have formed in the first place without ideas of ownership that arose out of agriculture, and those constructs could have developed differently. It's entirely possible to envision a scenario where a matriarchy formed around an entirely different relationship to the land and the fruits of labor. Or where men typically getting pregnant created a domino effect on what social constructs formed around agriculture, resulting in a societal structure that's neither patriarchal nor matriarchal. Perhaps even one where sex characteristics would be seen as individual attributes rather than a basis for categorizing humans as "men" and "women" in the first place. "Making total sense" is somewhat relative to various factors and biases.
@peterjackson4763
@peterjackson4763 9 ай бұрын
@@Swenglish Sex is far too important for it not to be a major way of categorizing humans. Much less significant factors like skin colour have been and are used in a similar fashion.
@Swenglish
@Swenglish 9 ай бұрын
@@peterjackson4763 But there's more than one way of interpreting and categorizing sex. Since sex characteristics are distributed bimodally, leading to common groupings, it's easy but not exactly scientific to construct a normative binary model and "ignore" (or worse, erase) exceptions to the apparent pattern, but that starts from the idea of placing value on normativity and marginalizing outliers, which is kind of arbitrary. "Abnormal" and "exceptional" are two different words for the same thing, differentiated only by bias (with perhaps "uncommon" being more neutral synonym). In a world where sex characteristics are similarly bimodally distributed but in different common groupings (i.e. people with "male" external genitals and secondary sex characteristics are more likely to have the capacity to get pregnant), biases may evolve differently and normativity may not be valued above individuality the way you may take for granted. In such a scenario, it's possible that common groupings would be seen as a mere side effect of the interplay between developmental factors (to whatever extent they are understood) and statistical probability and not as important to defining a person's identity as individual characteristics. Part of that is how willing people are to talk about the observation of something uncommon in the context of sex, and how early in the development of cultural biases and categorizations those conversations are taking place. Taboo and confirmation bias go hand in hand in enhancing the illusion of a binary, after all, and given different biases and taboos in combination with different common groupings, the bimodal distribution may be interpreted differently.
@peterjackson4763
@peterjackson4763 9 ай бұрын
@@Swenglish On the individual level the binary classification is people I want to have sex with and those I don't. That varies from person to person but is not arbitrary nor an illusion for those individuals. Biology also dictates that some pairings can lead to pregnancy and some can't, and evolution requires that pairings that can be common. BTW family units existed in some hunter gatherer societies. It is unlikely that the idea originated with agriculture, though that may have made it more common.
@Swenglish
@Swenglish 9 ай бұрын
@@peterjackson4763 In our reality, there are people born with a vulva and undescended testes, and various other "atypical" combinations of attributes that may result in not being able to get pregnant or impregnate anyone in spite of what one might expect based on generalizations. Attributes externally visible at birth are not a 100% accurate indicator of a person's reproductive ability, even setting aside any external factors that may disrupt the ability or its development (and then there are atypical combinations of attributes that *are* visible at birth). It's impossible to accurately divide all humans into people who can get pregnant and people who can impregnate based on a glance. There will inevitably be exceptions to the general observation. How a culture deals with the reality of that inconsistency depends on various contextual, chronological and memetic factors. The general pattern and the contradictory evidence are filtered together through everything else. If for example the general pattern is discovered by someone who themself is an exception to it, or has already observed one, the pattern may be interpreted differently from the very beginning. And that's not even getting into identity and the brain, which is a whole other can of worms (although there seems to be some overlap).

I'm really enjoying seeing you discover Red Dwarf, you're bringing a fantastic perspective to the series for me, and I'm so happy you enjoy it! (and yeah, series 3 is where it really kicks up into brilliance). I discovered it as a kid, messing around in my room with a "portable" black and white TV (it was like a 4.5 inch screen, 18" deep. Tiny as TV's went in those days). I happened upon "Echoes" being played on my local PBS station, but try as I might, I could never find an airing time or locate it again. So to the Internet I went. At the time, downloading an entire TV show was unimaginable, so all I had to experience the Dwarf was scripts, which I'd read and act out in my head. Years later, DVDs of the show started coming out, and it was weird syncing my "memories" of the show (that I'd staged in my head) with how it was actually aired.

i started watching Red Dwarf when season 2 first came out, and then watched season 1 on repeat quickly afterwards.. when people say its getting good from season 3-6 for example they mean it gets better & better.. season 1-2 were still good... especially for the time they were out and when we had not seen anything like it before.. its just that later seasons had more budget and more action.. and Kryten is a really good character too.

Guys, it was cool that you took some time to talk about gender roles,harassment and other related topics. Yes, it’s a fun show and the issues are dealt with in a fun way but you also looked it in the eye and discussed the subjects behind the humour seriously. 🫡

So far your reactions mirror my own way back in my school days when these were shown, so, despite the common view that the next series 'is were it gets good' I'm a little anxious, as the next episode can still provoke ranting from me and in my experience it's well loved by people who missed the first two series at the time but provokes a different reaction from those who started at the beginning. I loved your reaction to this. It's a surprising episode from a bunch of guys in 1988!

Love that Patrick Stewart loved this show & was a great fan of it, would have been great if he could have done a cameo. As you said this show was a brilliant way to show gender stereotyping by reversing the roles & made for some really funny scenes.

This is the episode that shows what Danny John Jules' career mostly was before this show. He was a dancer and singer. He has been in other things as an actor since then, with probably his most recent being a few series on the show Death In Paradise, a funny crime show. This is also the episode that really made me love Danny and not just the character of Cat as I could see just how talented he is.

I loved this episode. What’s crazy is that the song Tongue Tied became quite popular and made it up the UK music charts. It was actually released as a single credited to The Cat! The song popularity really catapulted Red Dwarf the show. From then they were off and running. And yes…KRYTEN WILL RETURN. He’s played by someone new. He becomes another valuable member of the RD crew. Can’t wait for your future reactions.

The writers are proper sci fi fans, and so many of the episodes are based upon genuine scientific theories. They are obviously twisted massively for comedy effect but there is almost always real science in there somewhere.

Fun fact: Tongue tied actually hit to 18 in the UK singles charts in 1993. (Peaking at 17) It was written by Danny John-Jules originally in 1983, and it's lyrics altered for this episode in 1988. Look up the full version and listen to it in your own time you'll not get it out of your head for a while. Trust me. I'm singing it as I type this.

Danny John-Jules didn't write the song. An earlier version, also with lyrics by Grant and Naylor, appeared in their radio series "Son Of Cliche" which was broadcast in 1983. I don't know who actually sang it though.

This is one of my fav episodes of anything ever. It's up there with Blackadder S04E06. Kat said "for the 80s this is wild". Yes! It was! I was a teenager and I saw it on its first broadcast. This episode hugely influenced my attitudes to gender. This series did NOT shy away from social issues and the only downside is that it sadly remains relevant and recognisable to this day...

Important note for the next episode, you HAVE to read the scrolling writing at the start to find out what happened with Lister's pregnancy etc. You'll have to slow it down because its super sped up. First time I watched it was when it came out on TV so obviously couldn't pause or rewind it 😂 so was completely clueless till I got it on dvd.

when patrick steward initially thought Red Dwarf was ripping of Star Trek Next Gen, what he hadnt realised was that most of the Red Dwarf episodes came out before or at the same time as the next gen seasons.. and also, when he watched more of them he realised it was a comedy and not being taken seriously like star trek

I know many of us, myself included says it gets really good from season 3, but its kind of a gradual increase over the first 2 series. The last few episodes od season 2 were really good and Season 3 the production budget was increased and the stories continue to be as crazy and as thought provoking. One thing for certain, every single episode in season 3 is really really good and well written. Plus you'll get your Kryten answer..... although you almost certainly have watched it by now :-)

Ah, Red Dwarf. Some stuff stays constant, some elements get abandoned, and just when you think something is one thing, a callback comes out of left field to pull it into the other. "How are you going to have babies without a woman on board? I dunno but it's going to be a laugh finding out!" It sure is. Anyway, Series 3 thru 6 are the consensus Golden Age of Red Dwarf, but lots of people (myself included) also consider S1 and S2 great as well. The show morphs from "Odd Couple In Space" to "Ridiculous Star Trek" and, again not to give too much away, the cleanest divide between between the former and latter is a "soft reboot" at the point you're at now, between S2 and S3 (show got renewed for more series' and got a bigger production budget). And don't worry, Kryten's coming.

I personally split the series of red dwarf into 4 eras. Series 1and 2 are where they establish the series. Series 3 to 6 are the prime run of red dwarf. Series 7 and 8 is where they mix things up a bit. Then series 10 to 12 is the revival years later.

One thing this show has, is character growth and development. I believe that Red Dwarf, like Star Trek, made me into a better person. Craig Charles (David Lister) once said in an interview, "It's about getting along with your mates." I think that was always central to the show's appeal and it's interesting watching all of the characters become more self aware and better people over time.

The female Lister and Rimmer were SO well cast, and I already knew Hattie Hayridge (Hilly) from her stand up, she was an inspired choice. It's interesting watching Rimmer pushing herself on Rimmer - even though I got it at the time, somehow it actually hits home even more now? Good writing!
