Which type would you choose for your roof?

Galvalume: - according to this video, galvalume has a warranty & galvanized may not. However, I don't know which one has the 40 yr. transferrable warranty. - has 2-4 times the corrosion resistance. - has tested by the MCA to possibly last 60 yrs. or more. - however, is more susceptible to oil canning, but can, & in my nonprofessional opinion, be formed with striations & pencil rib, & installed with sliding clip fastener (is that the proper term?), buy the most thick panel possible (22 gauge for galvalume according to CMG Metals or .032"/20 gauge for aluminum), plus any installation techniques that I don't know about. - The whole point for installing a metal roof, galvalume specifically, is to do a quality installation & never have to think about roof maintenace without a warranty for the paint for the first 25 yrs. & not consider replacing the roof for the next 40-60 yrs. It seems with metal or slate roofing we can be "one & done".

READ YOUR WARRANTY!! What you interpret as a 40 year panel warranty is actually a paint warranty only that guarantees Chalk, Fade, and Peel within allowable tolerances. Peeling as a result of Galvanic corrosion in NOT covered by your paint warranty!! These vary from paint supplier and paint type. Galvanized or HDG has NO warranty. Never has. Zincalume or Galvalume carries a 25 yr-6 month warranty for corrosion when applied properly (installation and location) For a good feeling, always ask for a site specific warranty and do not depend on the "blanket" warranty. The site specific warranty requires a review of the location and then you have it in writing which makes it 10X more enforceable should you ever have to file a claim.

@@tylerwright754 in the salt spray tests I saw years ago, Galvalume lasts about three times that of G90. Galvalume roofs i installed in the late 70's looked new when I returned 20 years. It is my opinion that Galvalume will last a lifetime if you die when you aught to. What is the weakness of galvalume? Any type of metal trash on the roof will cause the zinc in the panel to leach out and weaken the surface. Condensate from air conditioning units contain copper and copper will quickly ruin galvalume.

one thing to also watch is the use of pencil or graphite lead pencils on bare galvalume. That is a killer for galvalume. I research pretty much everything i could get my hands on from Bethlehem before I found it. Saw lots of damage over the years due to this.

For confined animal operations, could you use galvalume on open air pole barns and only store the waste/manure and animal compost?

I just got galvalume intalled at my residence... and notice that the back of the panels have to two different colors and texture; so, I would like to have a lab to do the testing if I am getting the same material "galvalume" I contracted for. I would appreciate your help getting a lab regarding this matter....

Galvanized would also be great for gardens as well, as stated in the video bc when galvalume breaks down into soil, it can make you soild toxic to the plants.

Hello, Kevin! If you're within 1500 feet of a coastline we recommend aluminum. Galvalume is a good choice for other areas outside of that zone. Thanks for the comment! -Thad

What is oil canning?

Oil canning is a shape characteristic that results during the Cold rolling and Metallic coating process. It is a multi layered issue that starts with the Cold roll mill inducing a specific amount of shape into the Cold Roll Full Hard coil that will convert to a flatter product in the Metallic Coating line furnaces during the annealing process. What remaining shape after hot dipping has to be addressed in the tension levelling process. A lot of technical mumbo jumbo. In more laymen terms, compare metal roofing like a wood deck. When you deck dries out the wood shrinks. when it is wet, it expands. the process is the same with metal roofing whereas the cold and heat are the forces that cause the metal to expand and contract.. With that in mind, now put this thought process to your roof. your panels are fastened down every 18-24" from the gutter to the peak. your 12'-0" panel looks terrific!! now it gets really hot and that 12'-0" panel expands to a 12'-1-1/2" panel. but it is fastened in place and cannot expand. So, the panel buckles and looks like someone dropped a load of frozen turkeys on your roof. This is what oil canning is as a result of Thermal Expansion. Roll formers also utilize different characteristics to their profiles to help mitigate oil canning like adding pencil ribs or striations to a panel to lock the shape in and help prevent the panel from buckling from heat and cold or from coil with incoming shape issues.

There are certain circumstances when you can use a solution of bleach, detergent, and water to clean mildew stains, etc. For light cleaning, water and detergent works well. You can also use some solvents like rubbing alcohol for targeted spot cleaning. Actually, industrial environments are more harsh than marine environments. Not to play expert here, but as far as corrosion is concerned, industrial (generally) is the harshest environment.
