Amazing, fascinating and in-depth documentary on the history of mafia involvement in private garbage collection in NYC. While this is just one story of one company, I’m sure there are many others like it. Having filmed many private garbage companies in New York myself, it gives insight into the history that lead to the current situation of the industry in NYC today.

What ever happened to this style of on the street journalism? Why don't we ask the common people what they think and feel about current events these days? For one, this footage now would have been spliced with 12 two-minute commercial cuts; but we don't even see this kind of journalistic approach at all anymore.

I hope yall can forgive my ignorance, but why is everybody so hesitant to speak during the man on the street interviews? Is it just as simple as the one guy says that for years, there has always been some guy that comes around to let you know what the deal is? Or they just don't want to irritate the mob?

Cause you didn’t want to be the one person from your neighborhood running your mouth about anyone’s business on tv. Chances are a lot of people from your immediate neighborhood were watching.

@@RustyAShackleford I’m not sure what you are asking. Back in those days (especially in NYC), the mentality was to just mind your own business about everything. Mafia or not. People rarely wanted to be seen talking to police or news about anything, no matter how heinous or insignificant the crime was. Things like anonymous tip lines did not exist and 911 was fairly new then too. A reason why crime was so bad back then was because of that mentality and a lack of ways to report crimes with anonymity. I wish I could give you a specific answer but that’s just the way things were then, you didn’t talk to police and you minded your own business. My family and I grew up in the area at the time and it was just one of those unspoken things to not “snitch” or “gossip” I hope that helps

@James C that makes sense. Sorry I had just woke up and I don't think I thought my question through. I appreciate your answer a lot though. That's exactly what I was asking, was just in general why people seemed so hesitant as opposed to now when it seems like people can't wait to be in front of the camera like "I SEENT IT ALL!! And assisted." behavior of today. I wasn't alive back in this time and I live in a completely different part of the country. Idk if it's just the US now or the time I grew up in but it seems like today you can't NOT have somebody that's been keeping tabs on you one way or another, and you don't even necessarily know. But thanks for taking the time to respond. Really do appreciate it.

@@RustyAShackleford you’re very welcome and you are 100% correct about today’s people. Contrary to my silly profile pic I grew up in an age of rotary phones, no internet and only a few channels on tv. People then just minded their own business and seemed to value their privacy. So much has changed in a few decades. They use social media like a diary, video record everything, and can’t wait for their 5 minutes of viral fame (good or bad). All of that used to be considered unwanted drama and attention. It’s baffling to me, but I guess that’s a part of getting old lol. Take care, stay safe and well
