The Starglow filter from Kase made in collaboration with @AlynWallace is a fantastic way to enhance your landscape astrophotography. It brings out the larger and brighter stars, accentuating also their natural color and creates a beautiful glow effect around stars. In this video you can learn how to use it and see a couple of my sample images. I absolutely love this filter!

Its a great filter, I waited and waited but with no joy so eventually I bought the Kase own version called Dream Star filter, its exactly the same product just not the AW branded version. Apparently the AW version is only available from the UK Kase store and the Dream Star is all other stores, well that is what Kase told me on their webchat.

The above information is misleading. They're not the same. They might be similar, but they're different according to the FAQ section of the kase website: Q: What is the difference between the Starglow filter and the Kase Astroblast or Dream Star Filter? A: Only the Alyn Wallace Starglow filter is made to Alyn’s specific design brief, it is engineered to give the exact effect that Alyn wanted. The other Kase filters have their own effects and are manufactured to different specifications.

They're different. The dream star filter is stronger and not the exact same effect.

Great review, Kamil. I’ve had mine since May 2021. It gets used on nearly all my Astro trips. Here are some other thoughts: - I love the effect but it does divide opinion. The most frequent criticism I get is “it’s not natural”, but in my opinion it can perfectly encapsulate the dreamy atmosphere on a dark but very slightly hazy night. Most of the critics have been serious astrophotographers or visual observers. I see my astrophotography as art, so it works for me! - I don’t have a filter holder so I always wave it in front of the lens. This is fine for the odd shot, but when doing stacked panos it starts to get a bit tedious and numb fingers! - Typically I lose 1 in 4 shots because I’ve managed to get my fingers in frame as well! 🤣 - I now always do separate shots for the foreground as I find the impact on sharpness too much. This isn’t a problem at all though - especially if I’m doing longer exposures for the foreground to reduce noise. - I’ve not had any problems with stacking shots in Sequator - all seems to work fine. - I’ve made a short video that shows how the effect progresses over a 25 second (tracked) exposure. I took 25 exposures of 25s, with each one using the Starglow for a second longer than the previous one. I then reversed and looped the sequence. The point is that the effect is very very controllable, going from a very subtle pop to full-on dreamy wildness. You can see it here: twitter.com/paulhaworth/status/1484638282445205510?s=21 - I know it’s not cheap, but if you love your Astro landscapes, it’s a core piece of kit and in my view worth it. Thanks as ever for your informative vids! 🙌

One other thing to add is that there’s a “Starglow” effect within the Alyn Wallace Lightroom Presets, which you can brush onto stars selectively. Whilst the effect is nice if done well (it can go a bit weird when further global adjustments are applied!), it’s not a patch on the real deal with the filter itself. Just in case anyone was thinking about that as an alternative!

I've really enjoyed using this filter, especially as you point out for panorama or stitched images where the bright stars sometimes get lost. I tend to hold the filter in front for 1/3 to 1/2 the exposure time. If you are holding the filter you do need to watch out for reflections of bright things on or behind you getting into the lens, such as a red LED on an intervalometer.

9:01 The intervalometers have quiet beeps so instead of turning them off you can leaving them on and they can count for you for more consistency!

Great video and I agree that the effect from the Kase filter is really nice. I bought one the same way you did, get on the email list an order it as soon as it's in stock. The effect can be a bit too strong for my taste over a full exposure. So what I do, at least when I use a star tracker, is take one image with the filter and one without then layer them in Photoshop adjusting the effect using opacity.

Thanks for the excellent video. I got my hands on one of these filter half a year ago. I have used it with different kind of lenses and I really like the look. Recently with Nikkor 14-24 / 2.8 it was kind of hard to hold the filter in correct position due to darkness. In many the shoots there was shadows off my fingers!! I find it hard to place the filter correct and not touching the lens. Have any of you guys experienced similar and if, have you any suggestions.

I don't know if the StarGlow is the Euro version or the UK version but here in the US they are calling, and stamping the edge, AstroBlast rather than the StarGlow. And no mention of Alyn Wallace with it's development. The local Kase representative tells me they are the same and a friend that bought the US version says it has the same pebbled surface you show in the video. While the Starglow is on back order the AstroBlast is in stock on Amazon here.

I prefer to use a star-tracker to get muti-minute exposures, and maybe even stack them to increase the signal-to-noise ratio. Given my situation, for how long (or how many) of my exposures would you recommend I apply this filter? Is it still “half”?
@ajbrar7924
@ajbrar7924 2 жыл бұрын
I use a soft tone filter, it's not the one discussed in the video but it has the same exact effect. In my case, for a two minute exposure I hold it up for 10 seconds. It adds the glow effect and still maintains details in the nebulae etc
