The a/b button layout on the dogbone was emblematic of how attuned nintendo was to how we used the buttons on their controllers, especially coming off the nes. It was designed for thumb rolling, where your thumb would rest in between a and b and roll left or right as needed. It's worth noting that the GameCube controller also accommodated thumb rolling, as well as heel-toe imputs (tip of your thumb and lower joint of your thumb operated two separate buttons without needing to reposition). If you don't know what I'm talking about, just pay attention the next time you play (on _any_ controller) you'll very likey notice you do these movements all the time, we just tend not to think about it.

Mystery button on the top of the Wii Classic Controller was used for a clear plastic attachment that shipped with it. The attachment would slide onto your Wiimote and allow you to wrap the cable around it. The controller would then be place onto mounting tabs on the top of the attacment.

The Wii Classic Controller mystery button is for the attachment that allowed you to connect your wii remote to the bottom of the controller to allow for motion control, you press it in for the controller to grab onto it like a claw, and to detach the attachment that the wii remote was held in your press it in again to release its grip

The Dual Shock wasn't a response to the N64 controller, Scott. They actually had several revisions of analog stick prior, one called the Dual Analog that you left out. It was revealed before the N64 controller and the original design had built in rumble (which was removed due to poor audience testing).

I understand the hate, but at the time, I liked the Jaguar controller. Once you knew what the number pad buttons did in a given game, it was great. Like in Doom, each weapon was one digit on the number pad. So rather than pressing C multiple times, I could hit 3, then 5 to switch between different weapons on the fly. Also, I had a Mad Catz Xbox controller that was smaller than The Duke before Microsoft released the smaller updated version.

For my OG Xbox, I first had the Duke, and my second controller was a Mad Cats one. I really liked it, except one of the triggers went in too far and would get stuck inside of the controller, with the gas just floored on Project Gotham. 😂 I ended up taking it apart, and filing down the trigger hole opening so it had clearance to come back out 😅

33:55 I had a pair of wireless GameStop controllers for my PS2 that my dad bought for me in about 2003 or 2004, and those things were flawless. I used them for at least a full decade before I was finally forced to throw them out due to a combination of stripped screw heads on the battery compartment covers, broken battery covers (the batteries went underneath the grips and they would get really hot after a while, so not the most comfortable thing to have against your palm). Absolutely rock solid controllers, I would buy another pair of them if I could find them again.

15:30 the sixaxis didn't have rumble because sony didn't want to pay the lawsuit over rumble tech patents. Nintendo and Microsoft paid up to continue to use rumble. Sony LIED and told everyone the sixaxis motion tech was too advanced to include rumble along with it. It was the exact same motion tech as kirby tilt n tumble from a decade earlier.

The Wiimote and nunchuk are surprisingly great for playing emulators for NES and SNES. You can just sit down with your hands lying on the couch on either side of you, pressing all the buttons and using the analog stick to play.

The fact that this came out a month before the pro controllers video is hilarious to me

special edition controllers, i feel this pain. you wanna use them but end up only using them a little - still worth it and no-one can stop me. DS4 and Dual Sense though are a fresh new hell.

Here's an idea for a future compilation: "The Best and Worst of Video Games". It would feature the videos of Scott going through the best and worst ranked games of all time, as well as the Best Selling Games video and The Commercial Failure.

I can't comment on their last few peripherals, but I had a Madcatz N64 controller, several Madcatz and other 3rd party PS2 controllers over the years, an AsciiPad for SNES, and a 3rd party 6-button controller for Genesis. Most all of them worked fine for me. That said, I agree on the Boomerang 64 and SuperPad 64 controllers.

Big shoutout to the xbox360 and switch style Afterglow controllers. Gimmick aside, those fit PERFECTLY in my hands, the Dpad is amazing and the face buttons on the switch one esp. feel oh so nice. I love my 360 style one, it's my main controller for pc, esp. for fighting games. It's super precise~

The interesting thing about the number pad controller boom is that non rotary phones were actually like a new technology at the time so it was actually a cutting edge method of digital interaction. It was basically like the touch screen equivalent of the late 70s and early 80s

Xbox One has my favorite (modern) controller ever. I recently switched from a DS4 because the DS4 was wearing out anyway and starting to experience "Joy-con syndrome" and started to get stick drift, and I was tired of having to use DS4 windows for every game I wanted to play, So I got a nice Xbox One controller. The best controller I've ever used aside from maybe the game cube, but that remote is pretty much tied to its time, doesn't work out too well with modern games. You can do it for most games, but the lack of the stick buttons is the main issue.

I remember getting a third party 360 controller from my uncle for my birthday so I could play minecraft with my sister and was so excited, it was see through light blue, it felt alright obviously not as good as the official with but it still feels nice and nostalgic to use

I still use my 360 controller as my PC gaming controller, but primarily because it's a WIRED controller and doesn't use a thin, crappy wire to plug into your devices like the Xbox One controller does. Still... it's a cool controller. I got the black version and primarily just messed around with Banjo-Kazooie on my tablet for about a week with it as my wireless controller and it has a really nice, solid feel and I love the matte covering they used on the controller overall. Beats the glossy finish of the Wii U Gamepad by miles. Wish there were a good shell replacement to get that kind of feel.

The 8bitdo Pro 2 controller is a superior controller. Well worth the price. It's Bluetooth, rechargeable, has the option to use batteries, it's extremely comfortable, good battery life, and it has a tiny switch on the back that allows you to instantly switch between platforms. It's compatible with Switch, MacOS, Steam, Android, and Windows. It's pretty sick.

The whole "slow mo" thing that some controllers did that just rapid fired the start button would only work in games that had a hard pause using start that didn't change to a different screen, was instant to select and resume, and didnt obstruct the screen in any way. Which meant it worked on 1943 and maybe 2 other games.

With 3rd party controllers, I've had mostly good experiences. Even with rockcandy. I had that PS3 rockcandy controller and it worked really well. The switch pro controller is $120 for us in Australia so 3rd party controllers are all I'll use for it. I had a Power A gamecube switch controller and it was amazing.

Honestly the Fairchild Channel F actually has amazing controllers.
