Also in case any of you are curious why the mass ant suicide happened, ants are actually attracted to moisture and heat ( especially in the winter) so they all went towards the kettle to get warm and get a drink. Some ant species are also attracted to electricity too, which makes them nest in power outlets.

Ants will also release chemicals whenever they die so other ants can retrieve their bodies for proper disposal (giant pile of dead ants), so whenever an ant dies you need to dispose of the body elsewhere in order to prevent further ants being attracted. In this case however, the ants likely traveled to the boiling water for the reasons stated in the above comment, with this taking a minor, secondary role. Also, ants can most accurately be described as organic automatons, as they are incapable of conscious thought more complex than an if statement. They therefore do not really think at all about their actions.

The ant kettle story sounds similar to those cases of fire ants damaging transformer boxes and breakers… basically what happens is that one ants gets shocked, dies and its body releases danger/alert pheromones, which causes other members of its colony to attack whatever killed the first ant, and so you just get a bunch of ants running into a powerbox trying to attack it only to also get shocked and eventually causing a short-circuit. It’s really weird.
