@@MrKingNidge Barristan didn't approve of many of the things the mad king did. His honor as a king's guard is not based on the goodness of the king he is serving. His honor as a king's guard is based not only on how well he protected the king, how loyal he was, but his conduct in his own personal life. He went from being Robert's enemy, to being willing to die to protect Robert. In the case of Joffrey, it was never Joffrey was never going to be king, Robert wanted Ned to basically help Joffrey grow to becoming a good leader. You can even argue Barristan did not know Joffrey was a bastard (even if he had the strongest suspicions of him being so). As a king's guard, his first loyalty was to the king. Yes Joffrey and Cersei went against Robert's wishes, wishes Barristan understood came from Robert, but Barristan's first loyalty in that moment was to Joffrey, not to Ned. In that regard, Barristan was showing his honor. Ned certainly doesn't question it. Even when he is coming to arrest Ned, he wants no harm to come to Barristan. Ned understood Barristan was doing his duty.

@Abhinav Banerjee Jojo has a point however, when Ned Stark contemplated arresting the Queen with the City Watch, Littlefinger had to choose whether to side with the corrupt Lannisters who will work with him, reward him and bequeath him land and titles for doing their dirty work; or the incorruptible Ned Stark who will not reward Baelish for doing what is "his duty". So Littlefinger betrays Ned and helps facilitate the chaotic War of the 5 Kings and banks on the winning side. But now apparently he's stupid enough to work with the CHILDREN of the incorruptible Ned Stark as if they won't inherit his ideas and reward him? Total U-Turn, I don't think Littlefinger would've actually kept the Vale Army in Winterfell where his KNOWN enemy Lord Royce can congregate with the Starks. A typical Littlefinger move would've been to assassinate Jon Snow and put Sansa in charge and play off the Lannisters (who he was still on good terms with) and the North by feeding both sides false intelligence and siding with the winner. If he loses or gets caught, the Vale is virtually impenetrable with mountains and the Eyrie to defend.

Many people seem to miss that Ned destroyed his only chance of getting others in this room on his side, when he questioned Joffreys claim. He had the words of the King on his side, but those words did not mention anything about Joffrey not beeing his son, so when he questioned Joffreys claim without any proof right there and then he technically commited treason. That way even the few that had some kind of honor in there could not really help him.

What I like about this scene and Ned's character as a whole is that the possibility of betrayal and the threats against his life and his freedom don't sway his actions whatsoever. Sure, he may have thought that Petyr and the city watch would support him, but that wouldn't actually make him act any different even if he knew they would betray him. Similarly, even when he's in jail and his position is doomed he isn't swayed by the threats and he doesn't compromise until he dies. People who look at that and call him foolish, for not seeing the betrayal coming, for staying in king's landing unlike Renly and Stannis, for supposedly "hoping" that cersei and the others would be honorable, are missing the point. The honour that Ned upholds is a social institution, what in philosophy is called the golden rule; "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you", and it is anything but foolish. Because the only way to have a stable and prosperous society is when people at least mostly uphold that honour, without it society collapses and even the people who think they are taking advantage of it won't be safe for long. Sure, people like Cersei and Joffrey can be opportunistic and shameless for their own gains, but all they are doing is unravelling the fabric of society and creating the chaos and lawlessness that will ensure their eventual downfall. Because without that honour to hold things together, everyone else is gonna start acting just as shamelessly as you are, in other words it's a negative sum game for everyone involved. That is also what Martin wants to show us later in the story, especially in a feast for crows, where lawlessness and opportunism have escalated to a point where the entire country is devastated and plagued with crime, most of the pretenders are dead or dying, politics have devolved into backstabbing and scheming all around, and society as a whole is much poorer. In other words, Ned isn't foolish enough to think that everyone will surely uphold the same honour he does, he simply understands that compromising on that honour is a slippery slope that ends up being even worse for everyone than his supposedly "pointless" death could ever be.

It's interesting from Barristan's perspective. He doesn't know for sure that Joffrey is illegitimate. Assuming Joffrey is a Barratheon even if Ned is pronounced Regent even if Joffrey is not crowned he is still considered king but just without power. So Ned actually f'd up by saying Joffrey has no claim to the throne here because from Barristan's perspective and duty that's actually treason. I guess Ned thought that since the city watch is loyal to the iron throne that since he is acting regent he is sitting on the throne until Joffrey comes of age so they would follow him. Unfortunately time and time again we see Ned is a fool because he believed others would do as he would do, he never thought from other people's perspective or considered their interests and desires.
@An0niem44 ай бұрын
True. He could have (somewhat) diffused the situation by saying that Joff would be king in a few years but for the time being, he was going to act as regent. The words of king Robert were law before his death, meaning technically, the kings guard (and anyone really) would have to serve Ned, or be a traitor. It would have been very interesting to see how that argument would have played out. But of course, I think that dishonorable men outnumbered the honorable, so the difference would have been neligible

I suppose you would rather have a realm at war with the Lannisters. Ned was in no means a man who wanted anyone to die, even his enemy's that he knew would stoop to lows to kill him. That's what makes a true hero, a man who does not take shortcuts, does not scheme, cause it's the smart way to do thing, a man who only passes a sentence of death when it's nessecary. An honourable man who was not meant to be a hero, but a simple man with a wolf's honour.

I don't think a lot of people realize that Ned Stark wasn't stupid. He knew what was going on and he knew that staying in King's Landing certainly meant risking his life. But he wasn't afraid of dying, what he was afraid of was tucking his tail between his legs and letting the Lannisters take over
@I2dios811 ай бұрын
His entire stay in King's Landing is kind of meant to show that he is in fact rather stupid. He's an honorable and good man, but he isn't the most clever around. Certainly he knew the risks of confronting the queen, but he thought he was prepared. I doubt he would've asked for the help of the city watch if he knew they would stab him and his men in the back.
@mikyto731311 ай бұрын
Oh he was stupid and naive. He lived under the impression that his opponents played fair. He is the child playing Monopoly that announces when they are given extra money and return them. Cersei is the one that steal from the bank, gaslights other players into thinking she had bought a property and just 'forgot to take the card'. Ned expected that letter to be a trump card that would compel the Kingsguard to defend him but Selmy was a mindless fool, he trusted Petyr and Slynt. That's why he was disappointed Renly left - he expected him to do the honorable thing, not the smart thing.

No but he wasn’t exactly Tyrion or Tywin either. You can keep your honor but still have a filter. For example: if he hadn’t questioned Joffrey’s claim, he might’ve been able to get Barristan and a good chunk of the Kingsguard on his side and that might’ve been enough to turn the battle around.

Robert gave the order and signed it while he was still alive, making Stark's authority as regent absolute. Ned foolishly tried to delegitimise Joffrey's entire claim to the throne without proof, at the same time as trying to prove he'd been made regent. If he only did the latter, more people in that throne room might have defended him.
@TAKE_BACK_BRITAIN3 жыл бұрын
That’s a good point. Ned was way too quick with the claims. He should’ve first consolidated power as regent and then over time gather evidence for Joffrey’s true parentage and then exposed him if he truly felt like justice needed to be served. Or just do what Littlefinger suggested and only expose the secret if Joffrey and the Lannisters started opposing Ned’s power.

Still the same conclusion. The problem is everyone in the room seemed corrupted(except ned, selmy) Little finger and varys are plotting against the entire nation, maybe varys had some good intention but still he wanted the chaos. It’s so frustrating to see Ned be so smart and so stupid at the same time. Robert really did describe him best, “an honorable fool.” The first thing he should’ve done when hearing of Robert’s death was high tail it out of King’s Landing and either head back to Winterfell to prepare for war, or maybe try to join up with Renly or Stannis to support their claims to the throne.
@hxcvocalist3 жыл бұрын
My favorite scene in the entire show. Also here's a few thing about this scene. No Baratheon soldiers are present. Robert used mostly Lannister, King's Guard and Gold Cloaks when necessary. (At least in the show) Baratheon people fled with Renly to Stormlands. If Baratheon soldiers would've been there they would've followed the King's word but probably would've been slain at the same moment, being overwhelmed by Lannister and Gold cloaks.

possession is 9/10th of the law. They had the throne with the city watch and most of the kings guard already following them. One man (sir barriston) could not stop this from happening
@THEYLIVE201210 жыл бұрын
yes, but Ser Barristan was Lord Commander of the Kings Guard, all he had to do was say 'arrest them', but perhaps it is Eddard Stark's fault for not confiding in him first about Joffrey's lineage.Just a testament to the amazing characters in the books, where you can almost believe they are real and not the imagination of a writer.
@hollywoodwerewolf10 жыл бұрын
THEYLIVE2012 Ser Barristan couldn't order the City Watch aka the Gold Cloaks. The King's Guard in that room were blindly loyal to a rotten boy king which in turn made them rotten, like Ser Meryn who hit Sansa. He couldn't order anyone.
@tginn0710 жыл бұрын
THEYLIVE2012 Well my gripe with other stories is that one man can talk or fight his way out of any situation. Plus the majority of the men in that room including the city watch were loyal to the Lannisters. Even if they didn't scheme this situation it would still be 2 of the most powerful politicians arguing over the line of succession when most people believed Joffrey was Roberts true son.

@@Lite727 Not necessarily. In the words of Tywin Lannister: “do you think a crown gives you power?” Coronations are merely ceremonial. It’s not like the moment you get a crown you’re suddenly the king. If Joffrey was not a bastard then he still would’ve been the rightful king the moment Robert died. And since the vast majority of people didn’t know Joffrey was a bastard, then he did indeed seem like the rightful king and was treated as such. But if you’re talking in the general sense since he is indeed a bastard, then yea he isn’t the rightful king, but again, in the words of Varys, “power resides where men believe it resides.” So even as a bastard, he’s still the king because everyone said he is. It’s the same reason why Cersei became Queen later despite having no claim. Just because you don’t have a good claim doesn’t mean you can’t be king/Queen.
