Okay first of all, proper respect to Beau for the timing of this excellent drop #applause# But this reminds me of a question I've been wondering about of the general culture of sex in Westeros, particular when it comes to brothels. Obviously we're still a wee bit of time away from the invention of condoms. And so, do you think the concept of "pulling out" is there and pervasive thru Westerosi culture? Idk, especially with how this was a WAY out of balance patriarchal society, a big part of me thinks pulling out is likely not a big thing, a common male attitude would be "alright she's just a whore anyway, I'm paying my well earned gold to get laid, it's going to be as great as I can possibly make it, including that I'm firing the rocket from inside". And yet, trying to follow that to its logical conclusion, you'd think a preggo whore with a bastard inside her is quite common, but... no, there's no way in hell so many women would so easily just put themselves on the shelf for several months of not being able to make any money.

@@Kaycity44 Dormer asked to be released from her contract and killed off in Season 5 because she wanted to pursue other opportunities, but agreed to stick around until Season 6 for the story to play out like D&D planned, so we ultimately got more of her than even she initially wanted to give.

Well, on one hand she was almost perfect for the role and I'm glad she was cast and we got her brilliant acting. On the other hand, don't sign on if you aren't willing to let the writers give your character a full story arc.

I'm glad she stayed. But I feel in the books she'll have a more significant role. She already does. How would Cersei kill her with her whole family behind her, her father on the council and her father's army in the city. But Cersei is that stupid and reckless.

Made perfect sense that, after some initial resistance, at this point Sansa capitulated to Little Finger. She would have known she was outclassed, and she saw Baelish push her aunt out the moon door. And her strategy with manipulative, dangerous adults in King's Landing was to play along while she watched and learned, and survived.

Am I the only one who thinks the High Sparrow is a way better villain than Ramsay? We all know what Ramsay is and we know no matter what, he wants control and to hurt people. But with the High Sparrow his power is subtle and yet can expend throughout the entire city of KL. I never understood his motives and exactly what he planned to do with the kingdom when it was finally in his pocket. His mind alone has built an army and the respect of the people to overthrow the royals.
@walsh9080
@walsh9080 5 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I actually don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility his motivation was simply to please the Gods. As he tells Olenna on the show "I imagine this is strange for you. Every person you meet has an ulterior motive and you prize yourself on sniffing it out but I'm telling you a simple truth". But I completely agree the High Sparrow was a more complex interesting villain tha Ramsay. The High Sparrow actually wins the game of thrones when you think about it. However brief he does end up as ruler of Westeros. Plus when you think about the Sparrows punishing people. These are for things that by their own law should be punished. He's only holding the powerful people accountable.

@Australiantatious I disagree. Religion is inherently grey. For "every giving away your shoes to someone who needs them more" there's a "mutilating Ser Loras just because of who he fancies". That's much more grey than simply wanting revenge for being mistreated.

Littlefinger's pitch makes sense if you look at it from an "Iceberg Slim" perspective. What he just did was sweet-talked her the way a pimp does his girl. It may not make sense if you're standing from the outside, but if you're a young girl who has had a rough life of being abused and terrorized, a pimp like Littlefinger will latch on to your need for guidance and exploit the shit out of it. Littlefinger just sold Sansa wolf tickets to a hero's journey. I guarantee he's said similar shit to dozens if not hundreds of girls like Ros for example. Sansa is thinking that this man "loved" her mom, is practically family, has saved her life twice, hasn't threatened her or raped her, and he's clearly connected and very smart. She's thinking to herself, "I hate this, but right now I trust him just enough to tolerate this shit and let whatever his plan is to play out".

@@IvoryValentine22 Indeed. I'm game for strong criticisms about plotting and character consistency issues w/ regards to Sansa and Littlefinger in Season 7, but I think what happened here in S5 largely makes sense for both the plot and the characters moving it along, even when it leads to some deeply unpleasant developments.

@@vincentdawn9689 It also just makes sense psychologically, the kind of abuse she suffers is well documented and its side effects are well understood. The way she exhibits her emotions even many of her decisions are consistent with how trauma survivors act in the real world, it's something George has done a really excellent job portraying.

@@TheEnecca He does it b/c his plan is to do almost exactly what he does in Season 6, but at the time he made this plan, he didn't foresee the crazy abuse or Sansa having to escape, or Jon Snow coming down off the Wall to pick up where Stannis left off. The plan was to let Stannis and the Boltons fuck each other up and then swoop in to pick off the leavings w/ Sansa already waiting for him in her ancestral home. Best plan ever? No, but I understand the logic even if the risk is pretty substantial. As far as him not knowing about Ramsay? Sometimes you get bad intelligence or intelligence is sparse. If 21st century intelligence communities aren't without fault, what are we to expect of ersatz medieval ones? Oh, and just to add to my comment about Sansa's choice: she has none. She's 14-15, being hunted for her life across a continent and he's the adult.

It's a shame we never learned more about the High Sparrow. He was definitely lying and playing his own game. One minute he has bare feet because he gave his shoes away, the next he just left home without bothering to pick them up...like which was it? The whole point of him giving two different reasons for having bare feet was to show that he was probably not motivated by religion and feeding the poor and stuff. I wonder if they just decided it would take too much time to explore. Or maybe it's just enough to know that real people always have selfish motives
@walsh9080
@walsh9080 5 жыл бұрын
I actually think we understand a lot of his motivation from his chat with Olenna. Olenna is offering him the usual trapping a man wants. Gold, fame and women but he rejects it: "I imagine this is strange for you. Everyone you meet has a hidden motive, and you pride yourself on seeking it out. But I’m telling you a simple truth. I serve the Gods" That's when Olenna gets the real truth from him. When she suggests to him half of the people of King Landings are sinners, but he's choosing to make an example of her grandchildren and threatens him, he replies with: "You are the few. We are the many. And when the many stop fearing the few…” She's smart enough to realise what he really wants. The complete destruction of the existing order. He doesn't deny Olenna's claim that half the city are sinners, he admits it.

It's because Sansa/Alaine has become extremely desirable bride in the Vale (even though she his thought as a bastard), she is very beautiful and her body form foreshadows that she can bear many children (I guess she looks like a 13 yr old version of Christina Hendricks or something, or simply like Sophie Turner), plus she acts like a proper high born maiden, an she is super religious (she is always going to the sept). Everybody in thhe Vale is charmed by her. Also LF has currently the control of the Vale, he killed the crazy aunt, and he is slowly poisoning a very week Robert Arryn. So once the son dies (which is very soon), the Vale will go to one of John Arryn's nephews (one of his Sisters' sons or something). And that nephew has already demonstrated interest to betroth Sansa/Alaine. And I guess once they marry she will return to her natural color and reveal herself as a Stark, making Winterfell (and the whole North hers). Bran and the baby brother are believed dead and Jon is out of picture on the wall. Plus she's the niece of the Riverland's Lord (I know the Freys are currently in "control", but the other riverland lords are still loyal to the Tullys and the Starks, plus the Blackfish is still alive)

In the books, the whole reason that Cersei chose the High Sparrow was because after the first High Septon was ripped apart by the mobs, Tyrion appointed this High Septon, and Cersei didn’t trust his motives, thinking he was Tyrion’s spy. Also, was the Red Priestess giving the strange look to Tyrion or Varys? They all seem to know about his mutilation and what the voice in the flame said.

This discussion perfectly encapsulates why I think the Sansa hate is so dirty. When people get shit in this show it's mainly their own karma coming back to them Sansa (and to a lesser extent Arya) is one of the only characters where the horrid stuff that happens to her is because she's used by other people. Like her character don't like her character, fine, but it is such a glaring example of how quickly people are to jump to blame the victim if their not 1000% perfect and redeemable, something basically nobody is.

Actually it's a great scene between Baelish and Sansa. The problem was what lead next. Sansa should have been a manipulator like Baelish said, "make Ramsey yours". This could have been interesting if for instance she would have turned Ramsey against her father. Maybe seduce both and then turned them. Which would lead to Ramsey killing his dad.

Yeah I see what you mean but I don't think it would have worked with Ramsay, he is a true sociopath and sadist, he is not interested in sex, he likes dominating people with sex. The guy is a true demon, it is hard to have the upper hand. In the books, it seems that only Northerners know of Ramsey's nature, and the knowledge was not shared with the Stark daughters

I also have a problem with Cersei "choosing" the High Sparrow" - why the heck wouldn't she foresee a problem with a zealot being put in charge? It's made clear she can't control him. Especially since she's sleeping with her bro. (among others).... The books made it more palatable and believable. She kills the high priest because Tyrion appointed him and she's her usual paranoid self about anything Tyrion. What she doesn't envision is the High Sparrow being his replacement. A consequence unforeseen. This makes more sense and rings truer. Why would she put her family in danger with a zealot in charge? She could have found a more interesting way to exterminate her 8 year old son's wife. And a safer way. Though the wildfire scene is awesome.

The Sansa/Ramsay thing wasn't bad. She wasn't the same as she was in Kings landing. Hell, at dinner she blatantly reminded Ramsay that he was no longer Roose's true heir. She never had to go there. She was there of her own free will. Yeah, she shed a few tears on her wedding night...so what? That doesn't mean the character is suddenly weak and naive again. You can be biding your time, waiting for a chance to bring someone down, and still not appreciate being fucked in the ass by them! The only thing that really spoils it, is the battle of the bastards. If that hadn't happened, then sooner or later, one day, Sansa would have brought down the Boltons. Her chance would have come. As it was, she got to feed Ramsay to the dogs by way of an apology for dangling a promising storyline, then snatching it away.

29:10 “the Jon snow latrine pit, named after Jon Snow” Fun fact! Kit Harrington’s ancestor, John Harrington, was the inventor of the first flushed toilet. It’s why it’s called ‘the John’.

Your opening but made me think of a Lee Pace quote from the movie The Good Shepered (2006): “I remember a senator asked me why we don’t put the word THE before CIA when talk about CIA..... I said “Do you put the word The before God?”

I think what separates the High Sparrow from Joffrey and Ramsay is that he believes what he is doing is right. Joff and Ramsay do things just to be evil. The Sparrow is doing what he believes is right.

I think the same thing about Melissandre. Even when she's burning people alive, she's not doing it because she gets a kick out of it. They genuinely believe they're doing a good thing.

I'd submit that the Sparrow has more in common with Cersea than he does with Joffery or Ramsey. Cersea is playing a real world game of chess with him. But he obviously doesn't have the charisma (to the viewer) she possess. So, yeah, fuck the sparrow. It never occured to me that the reason is hanging out their is the brothel theme park (lol) and he's just waiting for the Khalessi hooker to be freed up. Do we think Tyrion has been celibate since this scene? Cause man, D&D, give him a break.

Small correction (It is Nerd Soup afterall): Ed Gein made household items and wore his victims body parts (amongst other depravity), the original texas chainsaw massacre was mostly inspired by Gein; Leatherface, of course, wore the face or faces of victims. Jeffrey Dahmer ate and assaulted his young boy victims and had a fridge and home full of body parts (also amongst other dark and gross activities). There is also evidence, or even more evidence I should say, that some of Dahmer's story was embellished, even more embellished than Gein's may or may not have been. It's a tiny thing; mostly I just love your channel and recaps. Also, I am glad that even though the books are incredible and you both have read them and refer to them; you don't front and act like the show isn't absolutely groundbreaking. Keep it up guys. Love all the stuff you are doing, GOT and beyond. The only possible improvement would be to get more people watching, which you can only control by continuing to put out great content.

I think that Littlefinger KNEW who Ramsey was, and what he would do to Sansa... But that Littlefinger wanted that to happen to her because he knew that Robin Arryn was infatuated with her, and knew that he would only commit the forces of the Vale to Winterfell for Sansa. And also, Littlefinger gets to break Sansa down even more as a person and mold her into what HE wants her to be. He wants no part in Sansa being "empowered", he wants her to break, so he can "fix" her, in his image......
