He didn't selfishly want a crown, he just knew it rightfully belonged to him and wanted to do his duty in being a stable ruler uniting the realm against the coming invasion. Sacrificing the thing he loved most for the good of the realm is peak unselfishness. It's not like the normal sacrificing of a superstitious mad man, there was an actual supernatural threat that an actually real higher power was helping his followers get into a position to be able to deal with.

Cersie gets to confess and is released. Margery gets to not confess and go free. Loras who wants nothing but to confess fully and completely has to stand "trial" because they had no idea what to do with all the characters. They used the "no one is safe" as a way to get rid of characters and entire story lines by killing them off. And people thought it was bold and subversive to kill off characters we became invested in. I now see it for the cheap trick it was.

Ned's death served a purpose, and it made sense for brand new King Joffrey to go everyone's better judgement. But people were too lazy to differentiate between that and things like dumbing down Littlefinger just so he could get owned by the Stark girls in one of the cringiest moments of the show.

I'm pretty sure Jon executed Janos not only for mutiny, but also for Janos' participation in Ned's execution. I don't really think that Jon is THAT cruel to execute someone after they begged for mercy and I even saw some hesitation in Jon's eyes when he was about to swing the sword
