So glad I happened to get this video suggested. I had known about the original BasX A100 for years and earlier this year was finally looking to buy it, only to find that it had been discontinued and wasn't even readily available used. Very happy to know that the same basic design with the same ability to route full power to the headphone out lives on.

Thanks for the awesome and timely review! I was scouring the internet yesterday looking for reviews on this with no luck. I have an avr powering my kef q350 and I have to crank them pretty hard to get the power they need. Going to hook this up to the preamp and give it a shot. That smaller form factor is far more wife approved than the larger basx. Your reviews are awesome, thanks again!

I recently went to an Audio show and Emotiva had a raffle where I won 100 "Emotiva" dollars. I was looking for a new headphone amp to drive my power hungry Sundara's so with their generous prize and a 20% show discount, I ended up with the A2M for about half price. Although this is a modest power amp, it can also be "bridged" with some internal jumpers that convert it to a full on headphone only amp that drove my cans with no problem. but what really amazed me was how well it drove my less than efficient Apogee Acoustic Slant 6 hybrid ribbon/bass reflex speakers. I normally power them with a Mark Levinson dual mono power amp so I was shocked at how well this amp compared. Very dynamic, tight, controlled bass and detailed high end. An unbelievable bargain.

While I can understand everyone's complaints about the lack of remote/sub out/Bluetooth/etc, it's nice to see Emotiva make a simple, high quality option for people who have all that stuff in their dac/preamp already. I have a desk setup where all my sources go into one dac and I have a sub with high-level inputs, so any features beyond what this amp has would be wasted on me. It's a niche option, but it sounds like a damn good niche option. Great review as always.

Holy Cow I just installed the jumpers. This is the way it should have shipped from the factory. Sound is more open and dynamic. I like how I only have to turn the volume knob 4-5 clicks to get it at the right volume that I like. I hate the endless volume knobs that you have to spin like you are on price is right trying to get the volume correct. Which is what I had to do before I installed the jumpers.

I have one of these. I've had a bunch of "Emotiva bucks" that I got when I bought my XPA-3 5-channel amp to drive my surrounds (also have a BasX A5 to drive the Atmos speakers, and a XPA-3 DR3 Differential Reference amp to drive the front 3). I had a use for a good small 2-channel integrated amp like this, so I was able to use those "Emotiva bucks" and got this thing for only $80. Sounds awesome with a pair of KEF K 140 bookshelf speakers that I found at a yard sale for $50. The BasX A2m also sounded awesome with my B&W Signature P-9 headphones. Really is an excellent little amp, especially for the price! Ever since my beloved B&K Ref 200.7 amp died (and could not find anybody that could repair it), I went with Emotiva to replace my amps, and I have really been happy with their equipment. Really does perform excellently, especially for the price. Also to add. When my B&K amp died, I had to use the BasX A5 as my "main amp" (loosing the Atmos speakers and two surrounds (the rears) and running my HT as a straight-up 5.1 setup until I could either get the B&K repaired or find replacement amps. I will admit that I was really impressed with how that BasX A5 really sounded for the $500-odd I paid for it (compared to the B&K which costed north of $3200 when I bought it over 10 years ago). However, once I got the XPA amps in my system, I agree with what was said in this video. I did find the XPA (especially the DR3) did bring out more detail and much better sound-staging and instrument placement.

I've been using my A-100 constantly for years and I feel it was one of the best deals in audio, particularly because it was $199/shipped. It powered my L810s and headphones with ease. Idea for a new topic. “Should I add a external amp” I have had my svs ultra bookshelves set up for 4 days now and they sound incredible. The Yamaha a2a supposedly supports 100watts @ 2 channels. My curiosity is going crazy thinking of how they would perform with a Emotiva XPA-3 Gen3 3 Channel (300watts @2 channels). Most of us have no experience with adding amps and drastically increasing power. I think your explanation of sound differences would be better than other reviewers. Thank you for your dedication to the channel.

Always add more power. Always! The school of thought that says you don't need power are apologists for underpowered amps by companies too mean to give you power. In 40 years of listening to audio equipment my wow moment was adding real power. Over 40 years I crept up from approx. 40 watts per channel to 120 watts per channel. I added a 600 watts per channel( at 4ohms or 8 ohms) power amp class D and that pure total power upgraded every component and transformed my listening experience. The next manoeuvre is to tell you to buy high efficiency speakers. Well thats you just eliminated 80% of the speakers on the market. Power changes everything. My second system has a BRZHIFI Pad X10 amplifier from China 300 watts per channel 4Ohms/ 150 watts at 8 ohms. It sounds fabulous and has real power it costs around £100 plus airfreight. It's amazing 🎧🎵🎵🎸

Looks like a class A/B amp. worthy of serious purchasing consideration, particularly at the budget price. At this price point, I expected class D. I like the input sensitivity of just 500mv meaning that most separates like tuners and cd players will play plenty loud enough straight in. Only 1 input would mean an RCA switch box would be needed for connection to several items at the same time, but this is not a big problem.
@johnsmolley1941

I decided NOT to but it because of the AB topology. Class D is where it's at--AB is akin to buying an ICE powered car when so many great EV's are available. Used amp I can see. BUT as a HP amp this is a beast and not mere after thought.

Hell really good lithium batteries are cheap. For 2000 USD.... Lets see 200 W at 8 0hms requires 40 volts. 40 volt Li batteries are common now and 5 amp-hr battery might run you 100 bucks. Couple in parallel supplies 0,7 amps on average into 8 ohms (4W average output) x 2 channels run for about 4 hours. Buy a pair swap them out. Total cost for batteries $400 which could be charged several hundred times--call it 500x --might last you a few years. this assumes CLASS D operation which is 80 to 90% efficiency. I suspect one could get 3000 hours out of it--or an ave of 2 hrs/d for 4 years. Of course it would need some associated circuitry which I suspect wouldn't be complicated, particularly if its a wall wart supply. But unless you live with a really crappy mains, it all seems a waste of resources. Most DC amp power supplies do a good enough job that you will never hear a difference.

At this price point how do you feel about this amp driving 2 outdoor speakers 4' from a hot tub? Both would be mounted on the house facing the tub from one side. It is consideraly cheaper than the BASX A2, and I'm betting I wouldn't need that kind of power. Thanks for all your reviews. Was wondering if the larger emotiva basx A2 would be competitive with marantz pm8006 or Denon Pma 1600ne in terms of sound signature. I have a set of monitor audio silver 8 that I would like to remove from my HT setup and use primarily for stereo music, mostly Vinyl on a technics sl 1300 turntable. My budget unfortunately is low budget at the moment. I know you're busy... thanks in advance if you have time to respond.

I love your videos! Please excuse my ignorance before I ask this question lol. I have a Kenwood kr 6600 vintage receiver with pre in and out. The receiver has 60 watts per channel. Would adding something like this and using my vintage receiver as a preamp improve sound and or extend the life of the receiver? Could I still use the phono and cassette players attached to the receiver, including recording to the cassette? If so, would I attach the speakers to the emativa or the receiver?Thanks!

Can I give you an idea? Phase out the Sith Audio sponsored videos for a brand that is not owned by Disney. That way you could sell hats or t-shirts or sicker with the new sponsor logo on it. I think a Rocktopous Audio brand t-shirt would be good.

Spoof was actually real - Merlin speakers actually allowed you to run their bam correction circuit off of battery as well as AC - no chance of power supply noise.

If you check out the specs, the headphone output at full power is actually pretty reasonable where it counts. Enough for like HE-6s but not TOO crazy for a few other hungry headphones. 600mW is NOT unusable on a 600 ohm DT880 or DT990. Susvara, HE560, a few others would do well here too. The regular headphone out looks meh on this. The high power mode? Would be a nice dedicated amp for those crazy ones. It's also a pretty decent speaker amp as well.

Hey Randy. I just bought the Sony SSCS5s to put in my shed/work bench area. I want to get a sub $100 amp like the BT20A. However i'll be using mainly bluetooth and you mentioned that bluetooth didn't sound all that good with the BT20A. Can you recommend an amp for me? tone controls would be nice but not a deal breaker. thanks

ey Randy! one question, I currently have an emotiva a150 (which they no longer manufacture) and I would like to buy an xpa2 gen3 and I have this doubt about whether it is really worth the change?, independent of my current speakers that will probably benefit (klipsh rp600m) but I have this I doubt if I will really have a favorable change in the sound, a change that is not only 2% . What do you think?

Hi Randy. I'm over here in the UK and I can't see 240V batteries on the Sith Audio website. It's a lot of work to solder 27x 9V batteries. Also they will only last about 2 minutes so I am going to have to spend 10 times as much time soldering as listening. Have you considered this at all ?

Would this be a good driver for the Sony SS-SC5? Or would i be wasting its value driving such a low-cost pair? just trying to frugally enter the audio game here 😂… I have the SSCS5s now on order from Bestbuy (on sale now for 89.90), and am looking for a budget integrated amp dac. No remote is quite odd but that makes me think they definitely had desktop use as the focus which makes sense with the small form factor, headphone amp and ability to use it as a power amp with computer or a DAC controlling volume. But they don't bill it as a desktop solution on their website. 🤔I suppose if they did that then they would scare off people who would be interested in using it for a typical two-channel room setup.
@cheapaudioman
@cheapaudioman 2 жыл бұрын
yeah. this is just a two channel power amp with optional volume control and an incredibly powerful headphone amp. that seems to be lost on a lot of people today. I'm not sure why. I must have done a poor job of explaining in this video.
@WisGuy4
@WisGuy4 2 жыл бұрын
@@cheapaudioman Randy, we are simply depending on Emotiva’s description of this product on their website. They are billing it as an integrated amplifier that can also be used simply as a power amp and you are characterizing it perhaps a bit more accurately and candidly.
@cheapaudioman
@cheapaudioman 2 жыл бұрын
@@WisGuy4 I gotcha. Well “technically” their not wrong. The volume is integrated into it. Most folks when they think of a integrated amp at least think that there are multiple rca inputs.
