holy shit hugo martin is such a fucking genius. his design philosophy is so on point and to top it off he is incredibly skilled at conveying his thoughts in an eloquent way. it's like he uses "engagement" in the way he speaks just like how it's implemented in the game, because I never get tired of listening to this man, just like I never tire of the combat loop in eternal.

What Hugo Martin and crew pulled off with doom eternal is just incredible. This game has had me hooked since release. I haven’t grinded any game like this ever before. Amazing job everything it’s just perfect. The music, the visuals, the gameplay, the story, and the “Doom dance”. Fucking nailed it

Hugo can go make childs games for nintendo, I don't play repetitive games with "LOOPS" especially combat loops, doom eternal has trashy poor ass gameplay and is for idiots. Doom 2016 is 1000% more of a complete game
@benjiii34073 жыл бұрын
Rouge Shark Explain why doom 2016 is better? Because you can run around shooting without consequences and because it’s more dark so you think it’s edgier and “cooler”
@baraka41003 жыл бұрын
@@sharkulashairstylist5505 idk what you are smoking the games are the same. Doom eternal added a few newer features and environments. Saying Doom 2016 is more complete makes no sense.

@@sharkulashairstylist5505 How is it marketed to children? Have we played the same game or did you get confused and played fortnite? Doom Eternal is violent and gory as it always has been for the franchise

Rouge Shark your points are invalid and so is your opinion, Doom is rated 18+ for a reason, the glory kills and the gore in general, so please if you think it was marketing toward children go have a fucking sanity check

this was a great interview! Last things: i wish Cacodemons weren't so easy to stun and kill with shotty grenade. what about context sensitive multi- glory kills? Stuff an imp into a Pinky's mouth, uppercut the jaw through the imp and into it's own brain. Hip toss a mancubus onto a soldier who splatters like slush before stabbing mancubus' skull. etc.

Movement was always classic doom guy's most powerful weapon and extending that to this generation feels right. in keeping with "reward players for using game functionality" i was thinking of arenas with environmental traps that can level the enemies, but you have to parkour to the switches. A vat of molten metal in a tanker that you can dump on a pair of Tyrants by parkouring to a punch-switch suspended off a wall up high. not a must to win fight, but rewards players for mastering the skill/ saves ammo and bfg etc.

Confused by "gameplay loop"? Find enemies in fps, shoot them = loop get resources, build fortifications, shoot enemies, move away from kill-border = loop scout building, lay traps/ shoot out lights, stealth take downs, hide evidence repeat = loop grind xp, acquire gear, craft, sell, gather for raids = loop All games have loops.
@KalebSDay3 жыл бұрын
Are you actually asking a question or just stating a definition....yeah each game has it own set of tasks/challenges. The differentiating factor is if it steers you into a fun loop(multiple engaging stimuli to consider) or if it can be redundantly boring/exploited to non-enjoyable fault easily(shoot- hide behind a wall- lean around the wall to shoot- wait for health to recover-lean around the wall...etc). Now that last example may be well and fine if there is a lot of content to engage you with upgrades, interesting stories and what have you to make up for the lack of depth in the skill demanded in most engagements, but if not then the game is typically really dull. Check out Mark Brown from GameMakerToolKit on "How game devs protect the player from themselves" if you're curious on other measures that are taken for a more healthy gameplay loop experience.
@johnson1010YT3 жыл бұрын
@@KalebSDay i was commenting on others who said gameplay loops were for children's games or some such. All games have these core experience loops, and you are right, the best games have the most rewarding loops.

@@KalebSDay "Now that last example may be well and fine if there is a lot of content to engage you with upgrades, interesting stories and what have you to make up for the lack of depth in the skill demanded in most engagements, but if not then the game is typically really dull". To me, that's not engagement, though. That's a carrot on a stick. That's stringing you along with future promises instead of engaging you in the core gameplay NOW. It's the same with story, which is often separated from the gameplay, so again it's just a carrot on a stick and not real engagement. Engagement is now, IMO. That's how I'd define it, anyway. That's what's most true to my experience. I mean, if you're not finding the here and now compelling and are instead thinking of this thing that's not even on-screen, maybe that's a future cutscene or an objective marker, that's the hallmark of an unengaging game, to me.

I like the way Hugo describes the value of frustration. Personally, I don't get frustrated, but my way of describing it is to say that in movies, nobody wants to see an ineffective bad guy. Nobody would watch something where the heros are invincible and there's therefore no drama. That's boring, right? You wouldn't call that "fun". But in games, where it is no different, people do try to make the laughable claim that fun = ineffective badguys + invincible players. I bet those same people wouldn't watch a movie with no drama, and this makes them hypocrites in my mind. The truth is, they're just lazy players trying to justify themselves. You really can't achieve much in gameplay without challenge, for many of the reasons that Hugo discussed. Many games use cutscenes to fill that gap, to put some drama in there. But sorry, this is the gaming medium and to me, that's unacceptable. That stuff should be in the gameplay, otherwise I'd rather watch a movie.
