Adam, the 7800 wasn't a commercial disaster. It was the #2 console in North America behind the NES. It outsold the Sega Master System here by almost 2 million consoles. They packed the joysticks in with it because the market research said gamers wanted joysticks over the much cheaper-to-produce game pads. Sound is "bad" - 2600 audio - because GCC intended to pack better audio chips in the cartridges themselves; Atari's own POKEY was an option but they intended to sell Atari on their own audio chip called GUMBY. The system was ready to go in 1984 but then Warner abruptly decided to sell Atari Consumer to Jack Tramiel and a big dispute over who should pay off GCC for the development ensued - plus royalties - and it wasn't resolved until late 1985 thus the 7800 wasn't nationally/internationally released until First Quarter 1986. By then, Nintendo had locked in all of the third party developers of note into exclusive contracts and Tramiel's Atari no longer had control of the now separately-owned Atari Coin-Op division which was then known as Atari Games Corp. Instead, Atari Games' hit titles appeared on the NES under Atari Games' own sub-brand infamously known as "Tengen". Point is, had Atari stayed together as a single company and nationally released the 7800 when it was supposed to, it would've beaten the NES. All of the later Atari Games arcade titles would've debuted on the 7800 in the home and Nintendo and Sega would've been reduced to third-party licensees outside of Japan just as Sega had been for the 2600 and 5200. Anyway, grab yourself a copy of COMMANDO on the 7800. It's considered to be the best 8-bit version - better than the NES or Commodore 64 - versions. It features a POKEY audio chip onboard. And do check out the 7800 homebrew game scene too [over at atariage.com] which is going strong 30 years after the console's original test market release.

My first ever was a 2600 actually. I wanted a Genesis or an SNES, so my mom gave me her old 2600. Thinking "one is just as good as another." Eventually I got that Genesis, then an SNES, then a PS1, then an N64, then a Dreamcast.... Then the party just went on and on. Obviously this excludes handhelds.

This video was actually really helpful because I recently bought an Atari 7800 at a yard sale and it was nasty on the outside so I knew inside it was much worse. Opened it up and found a whole colony of dead bugs inside. Thankfully none of them were alive anymore. Probably all of them died with Atari.

bought one in mint condition boxed with not one scratch on any of the aluminum as it had its OEM protective plastic on the aluminium and is still perfect. it also came with the box manual inserts and 50 games for 50$ great purchase for a mint like new atari 7800.

Good cleaning Adam as always. @ 5:13. I have seen worse. I bought an Atari 2600 heavy sixer at my local thrift store one day. Once I opened it, I found a bunch of cockroaches inside. It was a pain to clean.

Used to his this console, but the controllers were slightly different, more cheaper looking. I got this after I had a mega drive, it was bizarrely in a shop in UK called Macro - wholesalers kind of shop. It came with about 30 games almost cling filmed to the console. My favorite game it came with was called Food Fight, so much fun! Atleast it was in 1992 :)

Oh as for the second question, Atari developed the 7800 like a year before the NES came out, but sat on it for two years. So it was out of date before it even came out. Plus, honestly, Atari was always notoriously cheap.

It's some kind of serial port. As far as I know it was never used. Apparently they planned a laserdisc add-on at one point. If you can imagine that.

You should remove the plastic cover that is over the cartridge connector before using the cleaning kit and don't use window cleaning. Use real isopropyl alchohol instead.

I presume the reason a genesis controller works with 2600 games but not 7800 ones is because pretty much every controller from that era uses pin 6 for the button signal. The 7800 controller uses pin 5 and 9 for the left and right button as well as 6 for "any button" for backwards compatibility. Unfortunately the 7800 also provides power over pin 7 telling the genesis controller that you want to press C or select. So getting two buttons to work would require a very simple adapter

Well heres the thing me and my brothers only go online to download dlc data (we have the old 360 and dont have a long enough cable and dont really want to buy a wireless thingy for it) and we arnt connected to online in any way but we can still access are dlc downloads. Why is that ? :)

That's weird yours doesnt work with genesis pads for 7800 games. Mine does.. Though only 1 button works so for 2 button games you need a 30 buck seagull adapter. Lots of 1 button 7800 games though.

You can remove the metal protective cover by using a pair of needle nose pliers and straightening the metal tabs along the edges. I have a 7800 I got when I was 7 and my power button stopped working (I now have to start the system with a penny and touch the two connectors on the bottom of the board. #cringe )I had to take it off to clean the board back in 1999. :) If you need more detailed instructions, let me know. FYI: if you find a working copy of "Chuck the wagon" for under $100 grab it! its worth a lot. It actually came in a bag of dog food.
