He's definitely one of the few bosses where it's better to have a Great Shield on you when you fight him. Makes his fight A LOT more bareable.

Probably because of the hit boxes it uses. I know his charge hitbox is janky. If that was fixed, it would be easier to read.

Everyone keeps telling me that but i didnt have any problem learning how to done the charge at all. And in this video I see a lot of the players pretty much gaslight themselves when they are playing really poorly and doing questionable things, or having their controller issues lol

@@aanadirbloodblade905every player has a boss that they do easily, and a boss they really struggle with. Like me, I did messmer 4th try, Radahn was easy for me (just fighting the camera a bit), but I had a lot of trouble on Commander Gaius until I realized he was an albunauric and was weak to Holy. Then I just smoked him with sacred blade.

I thought that this fight was fine. If anything, being near a wall actually puts you at a disadvantage regardless of whether he's doing the invulnerable charge or not because it offsets his combos and makes him harder to predict. That's probably why Max struggled so much with him. And yeah, he's pretty tough compared to Messmer because he's also scaled up more on an optional path. Avoiding the charge comes down to timing and dodging the right way. You kinda need to dodge through him and to the side to get by it well. If you just try to dodge to the side, he might turn just enough to still clip you unless you clear the hitbox. On my winning run against him, I also realized that after dodging that attack, you have enough time to use the Sword of Night and Flame's Comet attack against him and punish him really good. I've also heard that running a shield with high physical and magic resistance is also really good against him.

This boss is the one that killed me the most in the entire dlc, I just could not get the dodging times down, I mean I did eventually but it took awhile. This is also the only boss that made my friend rage not only in the dlc, not only in elden ring but the first time I heard him rage at a boss in any fromsoft game. I made a mistake with the end bit, Malenia also made him rage. elden ring is the only game that made him audibly angry out of the fromsoft games.

Can lure him behind the stone wall next to the fogwall and trap him in between the pillar. Then cast scarlet aeonia. It goes through the wall rotting him. Then kite him around the pillar not engaging in a fight until he drops dead 👌🏻

i've had frustrating moments in elden ring and most boss fights are fair challenge but holy shit this is the first time in elden ring i genuinely felt this was an unfair boss fight. i eventually took him down with a coop partner and made a new friend and offered help if he ever needed but man out of all the boss fights in elden ring i hated this one the most.

For anyone who doesn't know he is very weak to holy damage I used the hammer you get at the beginning of the dlc and maxed out with 50 faith and any ash with holy damage shreds him. His hit box is cursed even after two patches. And also guard counters with the hammer will absolutely rip through his poise and treat him like the joke that he is.

@@DesensitizedMuffinexcept it is bad design, inconsistent hitbox and dmg on his charge, AND he's invulnerable while he does it. He does it A LOT, one time he even did it 5 TIMES IN A ROW, meaning half the fight he can just choose not to take dmg. Also his 8 hit combo which is not a choice between dodging or tanking the hit, but wether you want to get hit by the lance or the boar. I beat him the "intended" way on all 5 of my characters, the only one that was even remotely consistent and not dictated by how often he decided to charge was my shield and spear build relying on guard counters and Deflecting Hardtear. That is bad design, plain and simple.

Gaius sucked, putrescent knight gave me a Lotta shit too, he would spam the move where his horse runs you over and then he spins on your face. I just couldn't get the timing and he would spam that shit over and over

Commander gaius isn't that bad, hes my favorite boss i pretty much downloaded his patterns after 2 tries He reminds me of champion gundyr in dark souls 3, though thats just me

I unironically like this fight, I think he's one of the best and most fair fights of the DLC. The only bs he has is the charge attack cause he's invulnerable and the attack requires a perfect dodge to avoid it. But if you are fighting him melee and staying close to him, he most likely will only do that once at the start of the fight.
