No single battlefield game made since replicated how good BF3 played on controller

There are these games called Transformers War for Cybertron and Transformers Fall of Cybertron. They were my childhood, and the multiplayer is just outstanding; it's so unique. Then in 2017, the game was delisted and the servers were shut down 2 or 3 years later. Unfortunately there was zero communication of this, so everything came to an abrupt halt. The beloved multiplayer was unplayable until the community was graced with a developer who specialised in reviving games, and by some miracle he brought the servers back. Unfortunately, not many people play it, but it's still good to see them up and running again and it serves as adequate means to relive old memories.

This is the exact reason why I refuse to purchase games that are online only unless they're on sale for dirt cheap.

I miss the late 90s/early 2000s in gaming. Epic Games, Blizzard Entertainment, and Valve, all on top of their A game with legendary releases. The best physical gaming copies in the industry and now, they're a shell of their former self. Even though they're still wildly successful, they've abandoned what made them legends in the first place. Then Halo blew the door open even more. What a special time in gaming.

This just reminded me that I miss Battleborn it had a story mode and a bot mode but you cannot load the game without the servers

Gotham City Impostors was one of my favorite games on Xbox 360 until it got delisted and the servers shut off. Great video and you make so many valid points! Getting on my 360 today to download the last remaining arcade games before they are gone forever!

The 360 marketplace shutting down hits home. I bought so many fun, dirt-cheap multiplayer games as a kid, and knowing that those games will fall into obscurity, never to be seen again, sucks. I commend projects that revive old multiplayer games; I just wish more games could be preserved.

I love how most of the time with new games if they add bots to play against/with, which is already rare now, you still need to connect to the servers to even just start the game, it makes no sense

Unreal Tournament 1999 was my very first introduction to the FPS genre. I still remember playing the offline mode, with the AI taunting, and mutators which gives the game somewhat of a variety in match. And let's not forget the iconic Facing Worlds map that was set in outer space. It was pretty cool and add with an iconic soundtrack. :)

I played bf3 on the 360. I remember when the beta dropped and the team i played with was so good we won every match of the night. I was on for hours and i couldnt get enough! I really wish they would port over the old games. Old is gold

I used to play this game called Eternal Crusade, it was a Warhammer 40k game, like was kind of like a 3rd person battlefield type of thing. I loved it, I was in community groups, even ran my own discord were we would do gamenights twice a week. I think I had 700 hours in it when it got shut down, and literally was playing it on the last night with a couple of people, just a few hours before it was gone forever. There is a fan server now I think, but I don't think it'll ever be the same, and honestly it really sucks to still get the craving to go back and play it when I know that I can't.

Killzone Mercenary had the best alternative to the online multiplayer conundrum that was the botzone, where you could not only fight bots as the mode suggested, but earn currency to buy weapons and equipment just like you would normally playing online and it’s sad we don’t see that kind of thing in other online multiplayer games

So I decided to go on Steam and download it again because it was such a fun game back then and then boom, no lawbreakers. :( I then joined the discord server and am now waiting for the playtest.

There was a free to play FPS game that i used to play called Ghost In the Shell Stand Alone Complex: First Assault Online. I was happy being able to play my favorite characters from the GITS show that I love. Its such a shame that the game shut down in 2017 after the devs pushed an update to "revamp" the game only to enrage their playerbase and cause a mass exodus. I know there is a fan attempt to revive the game like Lawbreakers, but it is very early in development.

This makes me wanna recommend Gigantic Rampage Edition to you. As far as I know it hasn't really been done before but basically a game called Gigantic, a stylish hybrid of MOBA & Hero Shooter, was originally released back in 2017. It was shrugged off as an Overwatch clone despite being announced before Overwatch. It was well designed, had great music and art and played very differently to anything else out there. Most importantly, it was fun as hell. It also got review-bombed by people who didn't meet the system requirements despite it being a F2P game. It died July 31st 2018. Then back in April of this year a different team of devs, who decided to dive into the old UE3 codebase, revived the game. It's not perfect but the devs have been slowly working towards making the game better. They finished a couple of old maps and heroes that were in development, gave us a new builds system, emotes (sorta), custom matches with spectator and now we're soon getting season 1 of ranked. Despite its issues, the game runs very well on lower end systems, is fully crossplay between PC, Xbox & Playstation and it has no MTX whatsoever. The game is ~$20 at full price but has been on sale a few times already (up to 50% off) and had a free trial week on Epic so far which makes me think it will get a free weekend on Steam at some point. This is a very rare thing that's happening and I really hope it doesn't fly under the radar again. It is worth looking into. People have been obsessed with this game for the 6 years it's been gone and now it's back. If this game succeeds now, who knows how the industry will react. Could lead to other revivals like Lawbreakers or Battleborn. Despite its limitations, Gigantic is worth looking in to. If you want a great breakdown of what happened to the game, I highly suggest watching "An Actual Review of Overwatch & Paladins" by Shammy. Basically goes deep into both OW and Paladins, compares them then spends the final 3rd of the video explaining how Gigantic out-classes them both.

Youre just experiencing what most gamers will at some point, if the games multiplayer is server based thats always meant one day itll be gone, peer to peer multiplayer means as long as theres players or a bot option youre fine, many older gamers experienced this realization with old mmos being shut down in the 90s and early 2000s

I was really really hoping the return of Gigantic would have gone over so well we could see the return of a bunch of those games. One of the reasons I bought it when it came back (besides really liking it back in the day) was with the hope publishers would see that success and bring back games like Lawbreakers and Battleborn that were great games with awful timing. Unfortunately, gigantic falling pretty flat on its face probably sent the message that it isn't the most financially viable thing....

I miss when multiplayer came second to the campaign. Then multiplayer was fun, not designed around Ranked and the cash shop. Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, never got to play it online but the split screen(there's a feature you don't see these days) and LAN parties were great.

as a gamedev im honestly so fed up with the game industry. Day after day decisions are made that make the hobby worse. Things get more expensive, beloved franchises die and we can only play what is new or have the luck to have the game we like still on. Everything is so tiring, all the new practices are just... bad. I honestly wish all stopped. Yeah, indie games are amazing but to think we are never going to have a bf3-bf4 like game again hurts... i was playing 2042 yesterday and it is simply not it, its not a modern combat game with vehicles and a light mil-sim game, its just a bf shell following trends and adding dead space cosmetics that completely ruin the feel that a bf is supposed to have

Thing is that time is moving so quickly that I feel like a boomer thinking back about playing MW2 2009 on my PS3 back then as a kid. It was the best time ever. 15 years later and the whole gaming industry has changed so fast and dramatically, that I don't really want to know what the next 15 years will look like

FYI forza horizon 4 isnt shutting down, its getting de-listed from stores so you need to buy it before december when it does get de-listed. Online will still work after this, but the end is probably nigh and theyll shut the servers down in 2-3 years after

I always get nostalgic about the games I grew up with and have very fond memories off. This includes the classics like MW2 and BO1 but also Halo 3 and Reach and even Halo 4. There are also cool classics like Age of Empires, Runescape (still play OSRS), Unreal Tournament 2004, a free2play FPS called Soldier Front or even a really old game on the PS1 called Team Buddies.

Shifting form Peer2Peer servers to dedicated official ones was a bad thing and we are paying the price of it. If dedicated server gets shut down, it's over, you can't host it anymore

I was super sad to see Xbox 360 online games like Gotham City Imposters (loved it so much) essentially die as the next gen left it behind. Theres also games still alive now I am worried about because it is all online and needs a healthy population for the pvp and market like Crossout. I sunk so many hours into it during lockdown. If I could still play these in 20 years, I totally would. It just makes me happy that I can still play some of my oldest games like Heroes of Might and Magic 3 or older nintendo carts because I own the physical copies but it is still only a matter of time until they wear out as well. Enjoy the little things while you can people.

I had this thought so often about City of Heroes and until the fan server situation happened I never thought I was going to be able to play my (still) favorite MMO again. Also, anyone else miss Monday Night Combat or Super Monday Night Combat? Also Battlerite still exists, but its basically dead now. I'm not a huge PVP fan, but I miss those. Also I miss Overwatch 1. Technically its not dead, but with what they did with Overwatch 2, I consider it unplayable and dead.

Horizon 4 is just licensing issues because of the real life cars. That is why it's getting delisted but the servers will stay operational for likely a long time to come. Horizon 1 and 2 only shutdown in 2023, and that's the online aspect the games remain playable offline.

Sadly, this is just part of the industry nowadays. Games for them are products to make money from and to satisfy shareholders. Licence holders also caught wind of the fact that they can put very stringent restrictions on how long their licence (like music) can be used without having to renegotiate the contract, so they basically blackmail game studios. It's a moot point but this is why I stopped buying any game that relies on live service and always online. I'm much more invested into single player games that don't require that stuff. And if I can I will always buy a game on GOG, not on Steam. It's not always possible. It's sad that consoles don't get that option, but it is what it is.

One game that I loved so much and can never play again is Transformers Universe, it was an MMO with an original cast of Transformers developed by Jagex. I absolutely loved it and P played it every single day when I got home from middle school

A friend of mine told me how Sony recently changed that we don't legally own our games, and the only response I had was that well yeah, we've NEVER owned our games. We own a license key to play the games we buy.

No for what is goin to happen in the future my game I will be playble. The only thing part you goin to lose is the cosmetics. That probably really on server.

As someone with 400h in Titanfall 2, Lawbreakers looks like a total clusterfuck tbh, movement is way too unpredictable to be fun for an average player, everyone is just flying around in random directions without any cues. Also very generic maps.

Multiplayer focused games yes. Why don't dead games include offline bots for competitive modes at the end of the life cycle? almost all the old CoDs have offline bots. Once the servers go down, you can still at least play for old times sake with a couple buddies. Even the Killzone games have bots so you can still play deathmatch against AI, no server needed. Halo has at least a solid single player and a healthy online community for the old games on MCC, but that's it. Perfect Dark/Golden Eye/Unreal/Quake, all these VERY OLD shooters all have offline bots.
