You may have heard that The Horus Heresy is getting a brand new edition pretty soon, and for the launch, they've brought out a huge box set filled with a total of 54 miniatures. To celebrate the arrival, Games Workshop have asked Myself and Georgie to paint up this entire boxset as the boys with Daddy issues, the original naming convention lads - its the Xth legion, The Iron Hands.

I hate the way so many painters and streamers make every faction.... Every army.... look like they have just stepped off of a spit and shine production line. This army were done so right, they are Marines, toughest of the tough..... if a marine has perfectly shined armour with that 3 tone oil look on the paint, perfectly shiny and untouched like 99.9% of every painter on KZfaq shows, then he isn't a marine, because he clearly hasn't seen combat. Seeing a gleaming space marine army would be as unusual as seeing an army of Orks, in top hats and tails. Great work, loved the grimy war torn finish.

I still think the best way to paint Iron Hands is to go with Autek Mor's Shattered Legion force which have red right shoulder pauldrons and red accents, creates a really grim and bloody kind of aesthetic that fits the master of the Red Talon.

Subscripted. Your army actually gave me inspiration to do an Iron Hands army too as their metallic black scheme can be quickly achieved by drybrushing. And I must say the OSL make the minis REALLY pop. Good job there! Also love the dust and grime. Quick question though: I don´t paint with an airbrush and I tried previously to get that oily metallic look by applying both green and purple ink to a metallic undercoat followed by a shade of Nuln Oil. The oily effect can only be seen when you know for what you are looking for as it isn´t striking to the eye. Is there a way to achieve this result in a better way as I described it above?

I think if you water down the oil or use a thin contrast paint, it doesn’t stain the recess as much and acts more of a filter, that might help? :)

Top tip: Blow your minis! "Ooh matron!" No, not like that. Blow on them to get rid of the dust and little hairs that have fallen on them before painting them or filming/photographing them. It's really important to do if you have a large project like this or you don't get to paint very often. If a mini is sitting on the side for a week between painting they will likely pick up dust. Give them a blow or hit them with some compressed air (if you have money to burn). Even giving them a shake upseide down will help.

To get better detail on the studs. Plastic casting cannot produce undercuts so it's either weird shaped studs like the MK IV kit has or split shoulder pads.

Its not real but this whole entire vid you have been referencing real life references for your painting decisions , from mud on the back of your real trousers to the dust being kicked up the legs .....so not an argument. i looked at them without knowing you guys had done them and disliked the osl .....compared to the quality of everything else on the model ....the eye lenses would give off osl but it would be a smaller coverage. Doing osl is quite the art to get just right,i do like the idea behind it though. The biggest HH 420 simps were the ones who got the models early to paint them in time for the horus heresy event .....
