I figured the buid-in-store thing was to avoid 'new on sprue' reselling, or to try and limit the number of people able to accept the mini and avoid running out.
@Daemonik

There are, as I mentioned, plenty of valid reasons to encourage and / or enforce building in store. A few off the top of my head: reselling and stock "control" (as you mention), upselling opportunity (you like this? Here are more...!), introducing new / inexperienced builders safely and effectively, encouraging the visual of a store full of busy hobbyists which is helpful for attracting passing potential customers, making sure models go to genuine hobbyists, just to name a few of the most obvious. Even "it's manager discretion and I have a policy of must be built in store so I'm not seen to be offering preferential treatment to some and not others" would be fine.

I sympathise with the third story, I had a major dose of hobby magpie syndrome following a series of family bereavements which turned my mostly painted IG force into a ton of built/half finished reinforcements, a Blood Angels force that never got to a fieldable state, then me getting Bolt Action, Flames of War, RPG books of multiple stripes, board games and a ton more. All it's ended up in is towers of unpainted plastic and me not having played a proper game of any wargame since the start of 40K 6th edition. Working my way through the mental health issues from the deaths and subsequent health problems with my Dad has left me trying to clear the decks to one or two projects to make it manageable.

@northernexile - appreciate the input and perspective 🤘 Just to be clear, I don't consider myself, nor did / would I ever claim to be "best customer", it's a biggish store and loads of people spending way more than I ever did in there, I dropped a few grand over a couple years tops, compared to a few who i'd see spending hundreds every week.

So, funny story, I actually turned OPR's rule set into an RPG with a character builder as a replacement for D&D. I'm at the stage where I'm looking to playtest it and I've got a couple groups interested already. I just need to set a date to meet up and play. Only problem right now is the venue, because my LGS closed last year. Once I have it to a point where I feel comfortable sharing it I'm going to reach out and see if OPR wants it. I'm not looking to make money from this venture, I'm looking to take players away from D&D and give them something that's really quick to get into and maybe even bring them over to wargaming. The idea is to make character creation as quick as possible with as few trap options as possible. There's always going to be an optimal way to build, there's really no getting around that, but I don't want options that feel like you wasted points. Mostly it's to make combat flow quickly so you don't have 3-4 rounds of combat taking half the session, unless you're only meeting for an hour, then it might.

I actually find it weirdly impressive when I see massive 45 year old greybeards sat opposite the table from Little 12 year old Jimmy playing a game. If they aren't That Guying the kid and are just playing an honest game it shows a certain lack of ageism. I on the other hand do feel awkward playing literal kids and teens as a 33 year old woman. The problem with an older player and a kid sharing a table is its- out of context- not a great look. I've seen the death stares older players get from the parents and I'm just too self conscious. Unless they're family or kids of friends I only play new people who are adults in the FLGS.

The policy on miniature of the month tends to depend on the store. The one I go to tends to insist on assembly in store. But if it's a busy day, they'll let you take it away to build at home.

Thanks for the perspective. I fully get wanting a quiet life and it being easier to blame (something out of my control). It's very possible that the standard answer "it's company policy" morphed somewhere into "it's company policy due to Brexit" because I know very well he has strong feelings on that subject. I think there's a very good chance that you may be right with this. It seems far more likely than "let's mess with this guy for the lolz".

I had a job a couple of years ago that involved trading stuff with another small company from Britain and a couple of mercheants. I noticed a trend. Every time there was a problem with any of our orders the default reply was "It's Brexit's fault." even if it was clearly some error on their part. Brexit became a scapegoat for lazy business practices.

When i go to tournaments i am there to compete. that said i do not got to kids or junior type of tournaments. but as i have gotten older, i have found the hobby is a place to mentor young men to be better men as they grow up. but i have found that after the first random round i am generally paired up with people half my age. (I'm 50) Sometimes you have to let your friends go. you have told others this for other reason. but when someone gets lost into any hobby, you sometimes got to let them go into the rabbit hole until they are ready to come back out. you can still play games with them. discuss the hobby with them. but that's all your likely gonna have in common with them for a while. and if it get toxic like them making fun of other friends you may not be even able to do that. As a former GW employee and manager of lfgs i have to step up for store manager dave, sometimes its easier to just say the boss or corporate office says its policy. And if your discussing it in the store, where other ears are listening its easier to just say this.

I'd say the best way to get someone started in the hobby is take them to the Warhammer store, grab a free model of the month each and either take it home and paint it together or go get some paints and brushes for them and recommend both some great tutorials like Duncan Rhodes and this channel as something to listen to while they paint and balm, new hobbyist.

I'm in the same situation. I'm almost 50 and I struggle to find a group where I fit, I often felt like maybe I was getting too old for this so I basically stopped playing in groups or at the stores, also in a non competitive way (most of them are just there for lists and change models extremely often based on the monthly meta, not to mention grey armies when you are lucky). I just play with my wife that also likes the hobby, at least I have that option :). When you get old enough I'd say 35 and up and you start having to deal with strangers that are so young something feels off for me and I couldn't feel comfortable anymore.

I was the same way for some time when I got back into it in 9th. Tried a couple store games, but because I was learning the "current system" I was getting paired with children... Which was awkward all round. On my last occasion I was paired with a kid about 11, and his dad stood by the table glaring at me throughout. Honestly. I can't blame him - what sort of dad wants his preteen kids playing games with 40-something men in a toy store? I stopped going to stores to play for that reason, and got lucky with finding a couple of groups reasonably nearby where the youngest players are in their 20s. Luckily my boys play, as do some of their mates, and my wife is very understanding about losing the kitchen table 😄

Man that last guy is a bit of a stickler eh? The guy probably wants to enforce giving the model to people in store but just blames brexit so he doesn't have to feel awkward about the policy. Once I found out it was decision based I would have just been like eh okay whatever. Oh and btw, you're not a whale if you're affluent and buy models. You're a whale if you spend a lot of money at that store. The fact you only buy small stuff there and buy your big stuff elsewhere he probably only views you as a nice guy to talk to who does buy stuff sometimes.
@Daemonik
@Daemonik Ай бұрын
Thanks for the perspective - I agree that if he has just said "it's policy to build in store so we can guide newer hobbyists, but everyone gets treated the same" or something I'd have said cool and forgotten about it. I agree I'm not a whale. I think I was trying to get at that Dave and I established a "relationship" based around our interaction rather than him seeing £££ when I walked in - which I think is why the lie bothered me as much as it did because it _felt_ like more than retailer/customer. I did cringe when I saw the title "best customer" as I'm nothing of the sort! I would see people spending 10x what I did. I think I could have edited down part of it about the money side - originally I referred to occasional bigger purchases from dave, such as having bought my boys a Leviathan box set each from the store. I was getting at dropping £x00 or whatever for those was no big deal, but that was a good year or more into having met, so it wasn't a foundation for the way we interacted, though it became an in-joke later on that I'd occasionally splurge. But I removed a lot of that because I felt it was already too long! I guess I should have proofread one more time 🤦🏻‍♂️

The opposition to femstodes isn’t about disliking female models. Most of the people opposed to femstodes love Sisters of Battle and Silence. It’s about insulting our intelligence, the setting’s own lore and history, and making an invasive change to a male faction in the service of contemporary left wing political messaging. We love the all female sisters. It’s okay to have all male factions too, and we’re not (insert your preferred insult here) for opposing these moves by GW.

@Daemonik

Not really - Greggs sell "pasties", primarily, with a sideline in sandwiches and donuts. From what I understand, sausage rolls (their staple offering, they sell them by the million) only recently made it to the USA about 10 years ago from Trader Joe's, calling them "puff dogs". If you look up "Cornish Pasty" you'll have a good idea about what they sell. It's also (generally) counter service and take out in a paper bag rather than "eat in".

After someone elsewhere in the comments suggested it, I'm going with "don't blame me it's (thing outside my control)" as a general wanting a quiet life thing, rather than a personal insult (as it felt at the time because it was just so stupid).
