I remember GW stores being fun back in the 90s and 00s but its obvious how crap it is nowadays by the fact there's always just a single dude and no customers stood in every GW I've passed in the last few years. They're not allowed to create an atmosphere so they have none. Result is a dead store. Its really sad to see.

@@Burnthas I think that may depend on region or the chance that the Manager and his upper management supervisor are laid back and cool so turn a blind eye to things. Will be interesting if that will change over time. But I'm glad to see that some stores have the old vibe, enjoy it whilst it lasts, as most I've visited in different locations in the UK have been sterile and nobody playing the games even though they are set up, hard sells etc etc.

Gutting story. I remember playing games in my GW store as a kid. It was Awesome. They had an entife floor with olenty of gametables and painting tables. I have to say, as someone who worked as a temp manager(was a part timer) because they could not find a new manager for the store for months, it was hell. I had no training to handle the store properly, and needed to call my superiors and former manager all the time to ask about stuff. Interacting with customers was fun, and I had some really nice conversations with some, but having to manage a entire store, alone, without training and tons of customers every day...Once they got a new manager, I quit on the spot. Was totally burned out, on both GW, and the miniatures hobby. Especially after seeing how GW did not really care about the hobby or customer retention for the store. It was just about the money. Would love to work in a hobby store again sometime, but, not GW. Never GW.

I FEEL your story, man, because I lived it as well. What you tell was also my story, besides a couple slight differences (It was in a French GW store. I won't tell which, as it's not relevant anyway). I was a temp manager myself, sometimes sales assistant, and sometimes store manager when the actual store manager wasn't here. A very close friend of mine, I shall add, who lived one hour and a half away from the store. So the only difference between your story and mine is that GW asked me if I wanted to run the store and become the full time manager, when my friend/manager I was covering left GW himself. And I refused to take the job. I refused a GW store manager position. I refused because of the sheer, raw and pure toxicness of the other side of the wall -Grandfather Nurgle would be proud, mind you. Or Tzeentch? Well to be honest, I'm not a leadership job guy myself to begin with, as I prefer to be an excellent Lieutenant, than a good Captain, but I would have certainly succeed as a manager nonetheless. Anyway, GW management, and the inside company state of mind is so toxic, I just didn't wanted to work with them anymore. The former manager/friend of which I was the cover guy left GW because of mistreatment, frequent lies, false promises and blackmail from it's bosses. It almost costed him his fiancee and their child. This is the kind of life damage corporate lies can lead to when you are someone as ambitious as my friend. We both left GW before such malevolence, he's married, and we are much more happier now. And better hobbyists.

I had that same kind of experience a few years ago. Didn't have any outward issues with my coworkers, didn't have any tasks not get done or slip. I got taken out to lunch one day by one of the managers. It was a casual, fun lunch. I didn't really know why I was going to lunch with him since we'd been to lunch not long before. At the very end, he started to berate me on my performance. All this relates back to a coworker who didn't see eye to eye with me. I'm not saying I'm perfect, but that just made me feel ambushed. I personally didn't feel it was a good way to handle the situation.

They were so close to dying because of this but 8th edition rebranding and cheaper box sets brought them back from the dead. Any question I had against this was met with being called a cry baby or a queer!! This was in my early 20s and my first proper job with a chance of a career. They even forced me to move to another store hundreds of miles away to carry on my training. when I bailed the month before the area manager called me up to threaten me saying I better watch my back. bunch of complete twats.

I honestly don't understand this sort of corporate buisness model - they make the store manager responsable for sales, but want to retain all decisions such as advertising as coporate. This isn't just GW, I see it all the time. You follow the corp direction and fail and are to blame and fired, or you deviate, do good and are blamed and fired.
@stonem0013

it makes sense if you think about the goals of the senior corporate management. If a manager follows their policies and does well, that is best outcome for them. But the worst outcome would be for a manager to defy their policies and do well, because that really clearly signals a lack of competence on their part. A manager who follows their policies and does poorly isn't too bad for them, since they can always blame those poor results on factors outside of their control (like that particular manager being ineffective)

The way it works with card games at least is you have them play there so that way they can see other peoples cards and then theyll want to buy cards to help increase their chances of winning or getting trade material.

I had a phone 'interview' a few months back here in the UK for GW's pool of potential store staff. I told my wife afterwards, there was some kind of weird and uncomfortable vibe throughout the 20 min 'chat'. I just felt like I couldn't answer what he was asking of me as a person and all my questions were turned into 'why are YOU asking anything?' I was like he was just trying to feel me out as a 'fit 'for GW, as apposed to getting to know me and what I could offer (as in 32 years in the NHS working with people of all ages etc and latterly, six years in retail)., which I thought was the whole point. It just felt off and unpleasant. Needless to say, GW never called back.

To anybody that is going trough this no matter the job this is flagrant MOBBING. If your friend went with a phone hidden recorded the conversations, saved the selling papers and performances etc then went to a lawyer to add the material as evidence then you would go trough 1 year on court but at least several of these wankers would be found guilty for mobbing their workers. At least GW would have to fire them until that happens the wankers will continue to create hobby and work nightmares at GW. PS don't give them warning that you are recording these conversations you will have to check with your lawyer that the recordings are genuine not edited etc. Then hammer them on court other than just severance payment you will get rid the hobby of several wankers and scare the living shit out of the rest.

The way this went is so horrible on a personal level, first and foremost. I'm truly sorry for this guy's behaviour. On another level, I actually don't understand how GW can tolerate people like this who actually tank a well-running store with a growing and buzzing customer base and where everyone is happy. This is the very foundation you'd want, it's one that my FLGS has fostered for over 25 years, these are the pillars you can rest a community and sales on, and for decades, too. This kind of community even does the recruiting of new players for you, and you as a manager become and advocate for the company. Literally everbody wins. I simply cannot fathom why GW's sales division don't make fostering this exact behaviour a core principle.

I was trying to get into KT v1, had bought the mech vs GSC starter already. When I said I was interested in KT he "tasked/ordered" a regular guy to do a demo game with me and just checked right out. Another time I was talking to him about painting models and instead of hearing me out on what I was trying to achieve he was like screw that heres how to dry brush a mini. Granted he isn't wrong, its an easy quick and dirty way to get it done and I did take that information in, but he was so dismissive I was like meh fuck this place. When I hear these stories of Innovative Mangers getting crushed by GW headquarters makes me wonder if they send spies out to the stores who report back with a warped version of events, seeing that some stories feel like that. Lol

Lol I worked GW in Northridge and Glendale back in 2004. Best job ever, great crew, manager was so nice, and we often played games after the store hours to learn and hobby. Never knew GW did any of this. Discount then was amazing. The pewter models where ugly af.

After listening to this, I am disgusted at GW management. This pathetic “Trainer” (?) obviously reflects the attitude of higher management and was obviously “on a mission”. Seriously, I was going to my local store later to buy the latest Underworlds set - I think, not anymore. This situation needs addressing immediately or GW will cease to exist very shortly (very sad for the decent people that put their heart and soul into GW and their products).

Listening to these gw employee stories, I'm honestly glad my local gw is Manchester and it is how it is. I really do feel sorry for these people. I've actually taken part in one of those role play scenarios with a member of staff. Gotta admit it is pretty cringe but I'm hoping it helped them. Props of being a very much so regular and kinda vet at the store lol. Generally I'm pretty good with the staff of gw Manchester. Plenty of time chinwagging but also keeping an eye out and letting them know when there are people at the till or customers that are taking interest in something if they haven't noticed. That trainer notice and immediately putting the phone down for me was an "Ah shit" moment. I think gw trainers are too rigid, they are like the ultramarines meme of following the codex to the letter, despite it fully intended to be a guide. Happy to report no ad but that laptop was another WTF moment.

It kind of seems like a lot of the things that people just tolerate in the UK, aren't things that are tolerated in the US. Now maybe it's just me, but I've worked at places where the Head Nerd tried to do those things, and because I just said "no", they backed off. Now bare in mind, I am ex military and look the part, this isn't some weird flex on my part (I'm not claiming to have been a SEAL or some other operator lol), but people over here, to some degree, feel intimidated by that. I only bring this up because people have brought it up to me before.

GW as a company has had a stick up their bums for the past 20+ years by my own expieriance. With games that in all honesty are notoriously subpar with big headed decision making by leadership that by appearances has no care for the end customer. If it wasn't for their creative and truly brilliant writers GW as a company would of gone defunct many moons ago. I'm not saying that I hate them or the product that they produce, but to say that I see what they are.

It boggles the mind how people in your stories behave rude and passive aggressive to the point of smugness, both games workshop middle management and the weird nerds in the hobby nightmares. Where I live isn't quite as old fashioned as it used to be, but this kind of behavior would be grounds for "do you want to take this outside boy?" The threat of having your ass kicked either by the guy you're being rude to, or your mother (I grew up in the kind of town where the cops call your mom on you because they know her personally) really puts a damper on this sort of behavior. The feeling of social invincibility is really apparent in these stories.

I have zero tolerance for this sort of behaviour these days, i rarely see it in life these days - I got a lot of it from managers in the early 2000s and late 90s where every day I had to fight the urge to punch them right in the face. In the end it's not worth it; remember 'don't get mad, get even.'.

I came here from the "Is GW really that bad?" video. I agree with some of the points (like the 8th edition, for example), but I feel that the real reason people (including me) leave the game is practices like this inside and outside the company. Threatening people with lawsuits, especially animators and proxy markers who don't copy their works 1 to 1, but are inspired by them, makes them look like huge hypocrites and bad people in general.

I'm honestly dumbfounded that GW even still exists, when they themselves are leeches on the hobby. It breaks me knowing genuine people who have passion and love for what they do are being crushed under the morally empty, corrupt maggots of poor management. With management like that GW's days are numbered, and they'll be their own undoing.

Moral of the story if your innovative and bring new people into the hobby as well making the company good turnover your a "threat' or a Rogue Operative lol. Even if you do it on the sly eventually you will get caught out. A sad shame, when I hear these stories where a good manager leaves and is replaced by a dog's body I hope the store fails and customers go else where. I remember when I first going into GW in the early 90s it was fun and the store team were amazing and gave great advice, never pushy etc etc. I left the hobby in the early 2000 due to college and then uni. It wasn't until 2012 I got interested back into the hobby - the new Dark Eldar did it for me lol - and I was more Fantasy and never played 40k - except for an introduction game with 2nd ed back in the early 90s. So I nipped to the local store and boy the atmosphere was sterile, constantly harassed with hard sells. Questions about the armies I was interested in were met with a screw up of the face and tried to push armies I had no interest in. Eventually I gave up and never went back. I still in the hobby but not GW, I discovered Mantic Games and we know GW make the best minis, but the enthusiasm of Mantic and their games just hit the spot - reminded me of GW of years ago. I still get the odd GW mini but not from GW. Sad really as some of my best memories of the hobby were back in the 90s. Love your content and stories.

This is one more of the reasons why I will not buy anything from GW if I can help it and so very often I can help it. As long as the higher ups do not crush this bullying I will not support the company. Nowadays I only buy things that are not easy to get otherwise, meaning practically only Necromunda cards. Models are not going to be bought by me from this company until their toxicity is gone. Until then my printer goes brrrrrrr.
