Joe, I loved the bonus segment at the end. It perfectly captures the spirit of most FMV live action games, how they berate you and belittle you all the time.

I'll be honest, in the Sherlock Holmes game, the video quality looks a lot better on the Turbo. The Sega CD version looks like it uses a lot of dithered colors to create each frame, while the Turbo version looks cleaner and sharper. Plus, I'm just amazed that they put FMV in the TurboGrafx without an arcade card!

The codec is actually worse if it needs to pause. It's probably not compressed at all. Yes, the colors are better (though certainly not a "million times"), but I'll put up with a bit more washed-out look and a touch more macro-blocking because both is far less annoying than the constant pausing. Thanks for watching!

I love how in NFL's Greatest, the players on your team just completely change based on the highlight. "Rice is in motion. Young takes the snap, he morphs into Joe Montana. Montana with the handoff to Craig, and he's tackled after a pickup of about 4 yards."

Thanks for watching. Colorado is hit and miss when it comes to retro games. We have a handful of locally owned stores that carry them. Just last week I was able to find R.C. Pro-am II for $5 at a local store. At the same store about 5 months ago I found Lunar for SEGACD for around $5 also. It's not constant but if you are persistent shopper like me you can and will find great stuff.

Hang on, you madmen actually converted your episode to a format the Mega CD understood had then filmed it off a real console!? That’s insane! I love it! Of course, it looks awful, since it has to be super-dithered, and even then the colours have an insufficient gamut. God damn that’s so dedicated of you, even putting it on a real Mega CD, I just love it.

As a teenager I loved FMV games. Something about seeing live actors in games blew me away. I thought they were the future. Looking at them now they do not age well at ALL. But at the time they were pretty impressive considering it was in the pre-polygon era of gaming. While most are pretty short plays with limited in what you can do, it should be noted on PC's a few games like the Tex Murphy games and A Fork In the Tale, an awesome game that few people ever played. Am impressed with how many you covered. I thought I had played every FMV game back in the day, but never even heard of "Wire Head".

Looking back on FMV games, it makes since why they thought it'd be the future of gaming. At the time, we were pretty obsessed with graphics (the bit wars), and everyone thought that better graphics meant a better game. Graphics couldn't be better than recorded video, so we were all excited about games made of recorded clips, but then we discovered that they weren't much fun to play.
@BrySkye
@BrySkye 9 жыл бұрын
There's actually a bit more to the story of why FMV games were so prevalent on the Mega-CD. Sega really screwed up with it in many ways. To give an idea of this, the development kits, if you can call them that, were basically just 3 circuit boards wired together. They didn't have a case. Or even a means of turning them off without unplugging them. These also initially used the standard audio-cd player drives which burst into flames due to the high loads and burnt the units to a crisp. But key of all is that these came with next to no documentation for developers and what was there was either Japanese or incredibly badly translated. Joe and Dave are typically quick to blame developers for sub-par games, calling them lazy etc, but sometimes there are things happening behind the scenes that really stacked the odds against the people trying to make these games to ridiculous deadlines or with no support with the hardware creators. The Mega-CD had huge technical limitations that would take time to overcome and work with, since it was essentially a multi-processor system with a huge bottleneck between the two systems. With all these circumstances and incredibly tight deadlines, FMV games were comparatively easy to get working on the system, so they formed the bulk of the early releases and thus the marketing for the add-on.

Over 33 people asked how this was converted and no one has an answer ? I guess converting footage they shot in 1080 to cinepak 1.0 at 320 x 256 codec from a video editor like camstudio 2.0. Footage wasn't recorded or filmed through a Sega cd ...they just converted to cinepak resolution and recorded game footage and combined them in pc editor. Not sure where to get Sega cd bin files to play your own converted cinepak videos to play on Sega cd though
