We might have next gen consoles and even better GPU's, but we haven't truly got next gen games in my opinion. But I'm so excited to see what happens. The Metahuman showcase was stunning, to do something so complex so quickly is insane.

Because devs still supporting last gen consoles, for example graphics of God of war Ragnarok was significantly downgraded so that it can run on ps4 (a 2013 system) For money of course

Metahuman is progressing nicely once they improve on the mouth area it'll be perfect. Right now there's a little jank and stiffness there.

I remember walking into a future shop one day and being blown away by a demo of Unreal ( the fps shooter) that was powered by Intel and Voodoo 2 card! Keep up the hard work Epic!

Say about Fortnite what you want, but it fueled the development of the engine and my mind is blown away by it. It‘s still a lot of work to make a great game but these tools help a lot and allow developers to focus more on mechanics, ideas and innovation.

That's the thing... I HATE the "community", the dances, the surrounding scams and hacks for the sake of those "vbucks" (our friends had their Nintendo accounts hacked and money stolen to buy "vbucks"), etc... but the game itself shows insane potential. And that juxtaposition kills me.

Can we get capes that don’t clip in and out of a person, and swords that the character actually sheath? Is that possible now with UE5?

That's an issue with collision detection and cloth simulation. I think after Ray Tracing is essentially mastered they'll move on to things like perfecting collision, sand/ snow, cloth and fluid simulation which still isn't that great in games.

It looks like Fortnite is evolving beyond just a Battle Royale/Defense game and becoming a full blown gamedev and fan content sandbox akin to Roblox and Playstation Dreams, but with fewer restrictions and a smaller barrier to entry. I can't wait to see what people will come up with.

p.s. regarding AI, I heard the new sony oled vr glasses are brilliant ;) also regarding metaverse, yes I agree it should belong to everyone. I'd even say it might become the replacement of the internet of today and should behave like internet of today where everyone can run their own content like now everyone runs their own website.. crazy times =)

As someone who is an amateur 2D animator. Unreal looks like an awesome way to make everything around my 2D creations... But... I have not a single clue how I would go about getting video clips with camera (and maybe some lighting) data and mattes out of the engine into something like Davinci Fusion so I can composite PNG sequences from Krita into them. I see all these powerful tools... But... I do not know what a blueprint is in Unreal. That's my level of incompetence. If anyone has links to guides for us newbs... I'd be all ears.

I like Tim's vision of the user created Metaverse. I am sick of Disney, Netflix, Paramount, Apple and Amazon putting up subscription Walls around their gardens. In a cost of living crisis they need demonstrate their value by competing against community driven content and virtual world experiences. Open and better opportunities for all to tell and share our own stories and shared experiences. Just as the next generation moved from linear Television to You Tube and TikTok, another generation will build photo realistic worlds and experiences.

Any news on stuttering? The games showcased look nice, but the STUTTERING in every Unreal title is just unbearable... We can blame lazy or inept devs all we want, but at the end of the day - Unreal should force shader precomp *by default*.

When they went under the log in the first demo, I legitimately got up and stepped back from my screen. You could tell that the world was handcrafted, but when the procedural system got involved, I thought they had fooled me by switching to IRL footage. The procedural generation is insane! I cannot believe it generated such NATURAL looking terrain and vegetation.

@@perigosu8449 There is nothing stopping you from making anything standalone using the Unreal Engine. Most of the things shown (except, you know ... the engine) or mentioned is optional when creating something in Unreal Engine. You dont have to use their EOS for multiplayer, you dont need to use their fab stuff, and you arent required to use their Metahuman tool. Metaverse isnt needed for any of that. That being said, always read the license agreements / contracts put in front of you, as they are binding, regardless of what someone on the net says.

The addoption of Unreal engine 5 is going too slow this generation, I think just in PS6 the things will be more realistic

The problem is EPIC themselves seem to just be getting a handle on the full capabilities and issues the engine has. Lumen and Nanite definitely seem like a game changer, but you're right, we likely won't see UE5 games really get adopted until late in this generation.

Unreal will slow the generation ? wdym?!! Incredibly powerful engine given for free with shared economy and integrated user marketplace. Epic and the way they run Unreal with its grants and all has done incredible work for the industry. Epic is getting it right, and understands what is coming and how to approach it, they seem to be the first on such a scale. This will speed up everything and create incredible new opportunities. And no one cares about realism, but if they did, UE5 is where its at. : )
