Wait, you actually forgot that GameStop bought Stardock's "Impulse" games distribution service for upwards of 300 million...then promptly turned it into a pointless marketplace that was a carbon copy of its website and no longer offered digital distribution (and all games you'd bought on Impulse back in the day no longer being available)

@@dazintheoven Yeah I was pretty involved in Stardock's community at the time and a big supporter of Impulse as opposed to Steam. Brad Wardell (Stardock's CEO) sold Impulse because despite the profits, a third of his company had become devoted to it and it slowed down actual software/games development, which is what Brad wants to offer his customers. He emailed every customer with a Stardock account to inform us of the decision at the time. Probably the same reason Kodak never went for digital cameras, because the model actively harmed the other arm of business. Kodak actually made most of its money on the film cameras used and not the cameras themselves. They had the ability to make digital cameras since the 70s but due to that core element to thier business they would not change early on could not in the final hour. Gamestop makes the majority of its money on used games. If gamestop started "steaming" it up they would be eating thier own sales for a product that produced less margins. Thier only real leverage is to go with the merch and gaming accessories because of the high margins and minimal chance of self cannibalism. Also selling games at a storefront is very different to creating an online gaming platform. The amount of risk, time, and money needed would be laughably high. Like imagine being a farmer that grows crops suddenly adding an acre to grow coffee beans without any experience in growing, making, or selling coffee. Now imagine the farmer realizing that coffee is a meal surpressent and is cutting down his other crops sales.

Turning Gamestop into a Gaming cafe and retail store sounds like a perfect idea to keep it afloat. Even during these covid times people don’t want to be cooped up in their house all the time. 6:10 Not even that, but in many areas of the world there is no digital product tax, many places have only started creating legislation for it very recently. So digital purchases would actually be completely and legally tax-free! You can actually take advantage of this, in Canada healthcare is paid through very high taxes, so your approach to getting your money's worth is to (in this order hopefully): buy games digitally, buy fast food and soft drinks all day, and use up the free medical system when you get sick.

Gamestop wasn't shorted because "it was obviously going under" it was shorted because they got a new CEO causing its price to spike 50% then the CEO came out and said that nothing was changing so they expected the price to return to normal so it would fall that 50% they wanted to make a profit on that

Gamestop should have started integrating lounges or esports rental space type of set ups or something. They could have done well adapting that way. Even special rooms for VR headsets, literally anything like that. Or an arcade even

I remember my nearby Gamestop closing a few weeks ago. I find it fucking sad how it went from my favorite place to buy video games to pretending as though they're an essential business.

I guess I'm a little stuck in my ways. I will ALWAYS prefer physical copies of games rather than a digital download. I learned the hard way that when you buy digitally, the games aren't really yours. You pay for access to the game on whoever's server, rather than the game itself. I found this out when I bought a bunch of digital games on the Xbox Live arcade, and could not play them when I cancelled my Gold subscription. I'm sure not all businesses practice this way, but it left a very bad taste in my mouth. When you buy a disk, you can pop it in and play it (For the most part), but if you were to delete a digital game, it's gone forever when those servers are taken offline one day. When the PSN servers go down, you won't be able to redownload any of your old games anymore, but if you have it on disk, you can pop it in and play it, assuming you've kept good care of it over the years. These days the games you buy on disk are largely downloaded from the internet when they install anyway, so it kind of sucks with modern games, but the retro ones will be there as long as they don't succumb to disk rot, which can be combatted with proper care. I still enjoy going to stores to buy things. Online shopping is convenient, but these days I'm looking for any excuse to leave the house. Plus you get what you buy right then and there, rather than waiting for it to ship to you. Another upside to this is that you can actually look at what you're buying, rather than imagining what it will be like when it gets to you house. This is especially useful when buying clothing. Can't tell you how many times I've bought clothing online and found out it didn't fit when it got to me.

I think the hang out idea is pretty good, specially if they went into the board gaming market. Something like Boarders where you would have a game shop with a coffee shop built in. They already have some board games in store, but they are mostly that boring monopoly variants. I think if they made space for people to come and play it could be good. My local geek shop had 'public' tables out in the store and private rooms that people could play privately in... they went out of business a few years ago but they were also always complaining about how much their landlords were charging for the space. I guess their landlords thought they could get a better price, the space has been totally empty for about 3 years now I think.

Holy fuck. Almost 20 years ago i played this weird on rails fmv shooter on the ps1. I remember being confused because the case and disc had different age ratings but the same title. Ive always thought i was wrong and the wrong game was in it. Ive been trying to remember for almost 20 years. Then at 11:01 i immediately recognize it. The Hive. Almost 20 years and its all because of goddamn Gamestop.

So many obscure games you'd randomly stumble across in stores back then, you never knew what weird thing you might find. Now everyone knows everything and the number of games released in retail is far fewer, digital games just ain't the same.

There was nothing shady about some brokers restricting trades on "meme" stocks. They simply did not have enough cash on hand to meet their margin requirements for these highly volatile stocks. Now, liquidity issues are always concerning, but there's no shady conspiracy going on here.

I feel like the best move GameStop can make is the Amazon game thing, most importantly reputable resale of older games and consoles. If I want a new copy of Wii sports I can either but online from like eBay which is a lottery, or I can buy it fro m gamestop. If gamestop focused on that nostalgia market with cheap older consoles and games, say I want a game boy with Pokemon for 40$, they could make some serious coin.
