Great video, but there was one thing I was wondering... You calculated about how much Fallout Caps would be worth in 1961, and then in 2015. However, the Fallout universe economy would continue until 2077, when the Great War happened and prices stopped changing. Due to inflation having a massive effect on the world considering all natural resources being used up, I wondered what caps would be worth in 2077. So I took it upon myself to figure it out. In order to figure out the value of caps I first figured out the value of gold in 2077. In order to do this, I had to figure out the % increase of another commodity. In Fallout 4, if you go to a Red Rocket station, the sign will say that ¨Class C Coolant¨ is $113.99 per gallon. Class A is cut off, but I´ll assume Class C is more of an average than Class A. I will also assume that ¨coolant¨ is effectively the same price as conventional gasoline would be and compare it as such. Comparing the gas prices of 1961 (~$0.27 per gallon) to the coolant prices of 2077 gives a percent increase of 42,122% Now, multiplying the price of gold in 1961, being $35.50 per Troy ounce, by this 42,122% means that gold in 2077 would be worth $1,495,331 PER TROY OUNCE. HOLY CRAP. This would mean a 35 pound, 510 Troy ounce brick of gold would be worth $762,618,810. Finally, this means that a single Fallout bottlecap would be worth $71,206 So this would mean that GatorMacheteJr paid $159,501,440.

Actually, in Fallout: New Vegas you could counterfeit bottle caps. The Crimson Caravan sends you out to a bottling factory to shut the machine down in fear of inflation.

HelloDolly I don't know exactly what you're talking about, but the bottle press is located in the Sunset Sarsaparilla HQ. You can receive a special laser pistol from doing "The Legend of the Star" quest. I personally don't know of a Gauss rifle in that area.

In regards to caps as a currency, in a world based in the society of the late 1950's glass bottles are still the norm as plastic is obviously a thing and commonplace, but it's less practicality and more just because they can, it's an aesthetic thing. Howeeeeever. We use cans instead. So I think in the event of nuclear war or other world ending event the tabs on top of cans would be the currency of choice being as bottle caps are pretty rare and cans, unlike in the Fallout world where bottles don't have plastic lids and are again, glass, and cans are rare. Ever find a drink can in Fallout? No! Just bean tins and soup! In our world though we use cans over bottles (for the most part) so yes, again, finally, the tabs on cans are valuable, keep them in case coronavirus kills us all.

GT has clearly never spent any time as a commodities trader - this entire video revolves around the premise that gold is equally valued in the fallout universe... just because gold is highly valued, it is almost certainly not as valuable as it is now. Time to get nerdy... 1) Given you rarely see gold in the rest of the world, the demand for gold as a commodity is far lower (indeed, it may not even be a commodity anymore) - thus the price is almost certainly far lower 2) Given there is a finite supply of bottlecaps (no more can be mined, and there is no central bank to increase liquidity), inflation can pretty much be factored out. Gold prices are heavily linked to inflation. 3) Since there is no active civil judicial system, we can pretty much assume that contract law isn't robust, and thus there are no open exchanges for corporate stock or bonds, thus the value of gold as a safe haven from high volatility is moot 4) Again, since no central bank and no meaningful contract law, the lack of banks and thus regular interest rates (and the fact that far fewer people are probably concerned with loans vs. simply surviving), growth is hampered, thus gold won't appreciate like it would in a fully industrialized society So really, only private physical supply and demand would be driving gold prices! Higgins2001 But how do you explain that to people in a reasonable amount of time while keeping it interesting and then relate it to a currency that people understand the value of? Comparing it to gold makes for an interesting video that people understand. Not to mention it avoids needing a lengthy explanation of economic theory prior to actually getting to the theory. Plus, every Game Theory video hinges on some assumption that if false would cause the whole thing to be wrong. It isn't about being correct so much as coming up with a correct enough theory that is fun to think about.

If you talk to Alice she tells you that while people do try to counterfeit caps it’s extremely inefficient to do so, she say because of time and energy to get it so people won’t be able to tell it’s a fake right off the back. Which is why your not able to spend the counterfeit caps you get at the shack, everyone in the waste can tell they’re fake and also helps to explain her concerns over the bottle press, unlike the counterfeit caps the press is an actual threat to business.

Objection! That gold bar clearly states that it is in fact 10 oz. You can't regard the purity measurement without taking into account that label. So the true value would be 1035.9 caps/oz t ÷ $1,095/oz t or about $0.95 per cap (2015). Which is still a lot, but considering it as an in-universe currency, it seems valid.

Actually, the split occurred on December 23, 1947, which in our timeline is when the transistor was invented. In Fallout, the transistor was not invented, meaning no color television, etc.

Transistors in fact where invented. in Fallout 4 a terminal entry in the Cabot house, December 5th, 2023 Jack Cabot talks about experimenting with the transistors. and he describes them as new, meaning they were invented later than in the real world. Although I still don't know why some of the technology, like TVs, and pipboys still used vacuum tubes.

This would have been way easier if u took the cost of purified water(20 caps) converted the weight of it from lbs to liquid oz (0.5=15.34) than subtract the avrg weight of a 16oz military grade purified water container (10-20 grams) leaving u with roughly 15.14 than divide that by 20 which equals .75555 meaning each cap is roughly worth 75 cents in water.

But the Fallout series happens in 2200+ Fallout 4 takes place in October of 2287 New Vegas takes place in October of 2281 Fallout 3 takes place in August of 2277 (Being age 19 in the game) you can't base the economy of the 1960's to dates hundreds of years ahead.

This is a rational decision that he created because if the frozen time theory doesn't work, what will? It's not as accurate as we want it to be, but it's as accurate as you could get. If we estimate value by estimations as it should be in the future, then that wouldn't make sense as the rest of the technology doesn't coincide with our world today, it coincides with our world in the 60s. If you're telling me it would make more sense to estimate value in 2200, then you're telling me it makes sense that color televisions don't exist in 2200, which, really, it doesn't. If all the world's culture and technology is frozen in the 60s through the 00s, then why wouldn't the value of gold freeze too?

***** True, but the deviations of prices within the game are widespread and highly inaccurate, especially considering the value of things increased because of people's increased need for those things. Gold functions in the same way as it does today, it just sits there looking shiny, making it a good comparison. Meanwhile, water is much more precious and scarce in an apocalyptic wasteland, making the value of it higher than today, making water an inaccurate source to use. It's safe to say that the price of a constantly present, precious source, whether in 2077 or 1977, is good ground to determine the worth of bottle caps.The frozen time theory doesn't account for deviations, like the Mr. Handys and the Power Suits, making it inaccurate in itself, but in a world with Laser Weapons and Black and White TVs, a few inaccuracies need to be forgiven. Regarding the the inflation of items in 2077, that type of theory would be just as sound as the Frozen Time theory actually, but to do so would mean calculating the actual inflation, which, to my knowledge, has never been done before. If you have a percentage as to how expensive stuff got, please tell me. For now, the Frozen Time theory, with all its holes, has the least holes of any other theory regarding the economy of Fallout's universe.

The weight of the gold bars were inflated to force the character to not be greedy and leave gold behind in order to escape the vault. The bars say 10 lbs on them so the calculation should involve 10 lbs bars. It might have been easier to just compare to weapon costs since a dramatic number of weapons are ripped from real guns. The Hunting Revolver would have been a perfect example. It is based of the Magnum Research BFR which sells for $1,200 retail and at 100 Barter rating the Hunting Revolver goes for 3600ish caps so that would resolve to 3caps to $1. Problem is the caps are very very inconsistent since there are guns that would sell for well over $10.000 in the real world that sell for about 7,000 caps on the game. It would be very difficult to get a perfect result.

the value of everything would change drastically because both supply and demand would be completely different because everyone's perspective would be different

Caleb hall Supply and demand would still be relatively the same, it would just be placed differently. Things that are valuable today wouldn't be and vice versa. Supply and demand always remain constant.

Randy Savage no, after the "big boom", i would assume the demand for a gun would be extremely high since its kinda the best way to defend yourself from getting you face eaten off. And the supply of said gun would be little to none seeing as how none of them are currently being made at the time. So, recap, big boom and zombies means a sudden need for a gun but since there arent any being made the supply would be very low. Think abut it like this. If you have a gun at a time where guns=you live another day, you arent just gonna be handing it out to the next stranger who walks by

+Randy “Macho Man” Savage food and water would be worth more along with weapons while gold in reality would likely be worth shit all. No seriously fallout makes no sense because who in their right mind would buy a bar of gold when the world has ended?

Randy Savage I maintain that a better comparison is neither gold nor guns, but the in game NCR dollar bills, since they actually use an in real life measurement... the dollar. BTW, if using NCR dollars as a measurement, a single bottle cap is worth $2.50.

Well in this world bottle caps mean nothing, he probably spent like $2 worth of caps. Heart warming story though of a triple a company that cares. AKA The only triple a company that cares.
