This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Gamification is a buzzword in business these days. Organizations are turning to gamification to engage their customers and motivate their employees. In this talk, Janaki will address what is gamification? Is it appropriate in the workplace? And what are some best practices that can help you design gamification that works!
Talk language: English
Janaki Kumar is the Head of Strategic Design Services, America in SAP’s Design and Co-Innovation Center. She leads a team of designers who work directly with customers to transform their user experience. She has over a decade of experience building, coaching, and leading high performance teams to deliver design-led innovation. She is the co-author of the book, Gamification at Work - Designing Engaging Business Software. Janaki has a Masters in Information Systems from Boston University. She has authored 20 intellectual property patent applications of innovative user experiences.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I never thought something like "gamification" could exist. I honestly hate how the job field is today: it's boring, it's stressful and your boss treats you like your a moron just being they do a poor job of explaining the job or motivating their employees to do the job. Most leaders motivation is firing the employees, and that is extremely stressful, and-for me personally-gives out some suicidal thoughts. What needs to be fixed in the job market is: try to open room to teach those, who want experience in the job, to get the experience they need without being shunned for not having those skills and get the experience through something that would actually get someone excited to do that job.

I can't believe the negativity in these comments. I have over 30 years of teaching experience, at postgraduate level, and have won awards for my teaching. This insightful, engaging and enthusiastic woman both inspired and informed me. I am fairly new to gamification, so perhaps other, more experienced commentators, may have higher expectations but I know a good presentation when I see one. This one is excellent! In areas where I do have considerable expertise I am still delighted when others explain basic concepts in admirable ways. Perhaps some of Janaki Kumar's detractors are just the slightest bit envious of the almost 50,000 views of her video??? I am!

I think that the presenter was very tense, you could hear that in her forced tone of voice and stressfull small breath-pauses. But I believe, she was just in stress from the crowd and was able to overcome it after a few other talks.

Honestly if i worked in a company where they gamified stuff this way, I would feel insulted in my intelligence. Usually they say that when someone always smiles, he is trying to sell you something that does not work

If you really understand the meaning, value and importance of the task you have to perform, and on top of that they are paying you to do it, I think gamification is in your way to get the task done. Meaning and Money are the great motivators. If the task has no meaning you get bored and I don't think a game will make you like it, on the other hand if they are underpaying you to do certain task with gamification are trying exploit to you. Anyways, this video was the very fisrt aproach I've ever had on this matter, so I'll keep studying to see the benefits.

A fine overview of gamification, but not very innovative. I've heard/read many of what was told in several other places. The examples she gave of her own use of gamification seems more like simply playing games. Overall, fine but not truly impressive.

I am a manager, i think this is BS., I can prove it with data if both companies agree some how. I dont think it will happen, so my 20 cents. As a manager i am always in game mode, so are the employees. So we enjoy it better. We compare performance reports in open. Employees are allowed to share their problems and stuff in front of everyone. Its more open thing.

take an old idea, describe it (disguise it) using non-conventional thesaurus, and voila "TEDx - an idea worth streading" has been born. Inventors ripped off by patent attorneys who have no clue about subject matter is one of the applications of this umbrella-game. Btw, "-ize" is shorter suffix to form noun-derived verbs in English, and linguists say "Don't litter just find proper verb in dictionary."
