True story. I was a huge fan of East Coast Hip Hop growing up in California. In the 90's it was not uncommon for rappers to complain about and/or make skits about hard it was for minorities or people of color to get a cab in New York. I used to think, "man these cats is trippin' it can't be THAT hard to get a cab in NYC, cabs are everywhere! I just didn't buy the story. Fast forward to the latter part of the decade and now I live in New York. Me and my man Lou went to China Town after work to hang out and the entire time Lou was like, "I don't know how we gonna get back to Brooklyn. Cab drivers are not going to pick up two minorities at this hour." Again I was very dismissive, just as I had been hearing the skits about cabbies on rap records. Then we started trying to hail cabs. We flagged down four cabbies, not one of them stopped to pick us up. My man was like, "see, I told you." The skits were true. There really was a fear on the part of cab drivers of picking up minority passengers. As fate would have it, two white girls came up to us and asked us to take their picture. We did, and as they walked away one of them turned around and said, "you guys must be having a hard time hailing a cab." We said, "yea we are." So this white chick signals for a cab and they pull over right away. She steps back and we get in the cab. The driver was not a happy camper but he had to take up back to BK. Smh.

Lots of talent, wish I was born during these times to hear these when they first came out.

I'm glad young heads still appreciate this music. The era when this was released was some of the best times of my life and this and many other classics were part of the soundtrack. I hear what's become of, what used to be hip hop today...well you can't even call it hip hop, it's something all together different but I just can't believe how far it's fallen. growing up in the 80's and 90's you thought music was just going to get better and better because everything that came out was so good at the time.

When the Big homie and I would be smobbing in the integra 94, hustlin n running missions. We ALWAYS were slappin Gangstarr and almost always played this slap. It was more than an anthem at that point, it was a ritual. Call me crazy but i feel their music played a big part of our survival. Always kept a vibe that attracted that same energy of positivity despite the negative ass situations we found ourselves in. Much love from the BLoK San Ho. Never thought id see us turn 30. music got us thru some crucial times. #RipGuru #BLoK #408
