Hello friends and family! I hope you are al doing well. This is my new apartment! It is located near Gangnam Station and is definitely on the cheaper/older side of things in this neighborhood. With that being said, it still suits me just fine for now as I like a relaxing place to come home to at night. I currently live here on a short term lease as I wanted to see if I liked it before I committed to a full year. The monthly rent is ₩1,050,000 with a one month deposit. For a year, it's currently ₩5,000,000 key money + 850,000 monthly or ₩10,000,000 key money + ₩800,000 monthly.

Sorry the camera is shaking a lot at the beginning. This was my first time ever recording a video like this and I have no idea what happened since it was sitting on a table as I recorded it. Sorry if it made you seasick. Lol

Yeah, the building is a bit old-fashioned for the Gangnam area (it's hard to see up-close in the video I guess), but I'm able to make it work with cheap furniture from IKEA and Daiso decorations. :) Thanks for watching!

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUr APARTMENT ROOM!! my favorite is the "bedroom" and the bathroom. i find it sort of distasteful if they don't separate the shower with the toilet and the sink cause its just really gross if it gets wet all over.

Jane Bennet thanks! The shower thin is weird at first, but I'm actually a bit of a clean freak so I like it because I can spray the whole thing down with bleach, scrub it, and rinse it. If you hate cleaning though and you don't clean regularly, it would get kind of gross. 😀

+Yamini DAGAR if you're OK with not living in central Seoul, there are many bigger places you could live in. I actually just moved to a new place that is a huge three-story 10 bedroom house with a very large living area. I have my own huge bathroom and bedroom, as well as a balcony that overlooks the mountains. Hopefully I'll do a new apartment/house tour soon for this one. Of course I share the space with other people, but it's still nice to have the luxuries of the large new home. my old apartment was in the heart of Gangnam, one of the most expensive neighborhoods in Korea. But there are other neighborhoods you could live in that are much cheaper and still super close to Gangnam.

Thanks! I came on vacation to Korea to visit a friend and since I liked it so much I started looking for jobs here. If you just google "how to teach English in Korea" there are a ton of sites that can help. Anyways, I just emailed my resume to some recruiters and got hired. 😊 It's relatively easy, you just have to buckle down and start applying for your documents well in advance. I started mid August and everything came just in the nick of time to start in February.

Oh thanks! I listed the prices in the video's description box. Most people that I talk to consider this quite expensive, but it's pretty cheap considering the location. I have a queen size bed and there is room to have another queen sized bed upstairs, so I guess if two people shared a bed you could fit four people in the room, but it might be kind of tight.

The apartment is great! Can I ask what school you work for? Did you use a recruiter to apply for teaching jobs? I heard a lot of negative things about hagwons, so I'm kind of hesitant to apply to them. How was your experience at hagwon? Sorry for all the questions 😁
@EmilyPetersenHomemaking
@EmilyPetersenHomemaking 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Good questions! I don't share my job info on social media (contract agreement) but I hopefully can provide some help. I used a recruiter for both jobs I've had teaching in Korea. I just found you have to use common sense and don't take the first position offered, especially if they seem really desperate and offer it right away. That means they're having trouble finding people to hire. Always ask to speak directly with the current or prior foreign teacher to ask questions. Also, something I learned in my last job is to record the interview. The person who interviewed me at my last school told me false information, and then quit before I started, so I had nothing to go off of to back myself up. I love teaching in Korea, but unfortunately I've never met a fellow teacher who worked at a hagwon that had 100% no corruption. If you are a westerner, there will probably be something going on that in your eyes is wrong or even illegal in your home country.

@EmilyPetersenHomemaking
@EmilyPetersenHomemaking 8 жыл бұрын
No problem at all! I'm happy to give you my opinion. I'm at a private school. I've been in Korea for a year and a half and have had my share of problems with the hagwon systems in general, but overall I'm at a good one now and it supports me to live the lifestyle I want. I think most people you talk to will say that they are not in love with their hagwon, but as long as the hours are decent and they pay is good, then you're good to go. I make enough to live comfortably and save.
@EmilyPetersenHomemaking
@EmilyPetersenHomemaking 8 жыл бұрын
+deedeeglitter77 The first time going to work that I worked 9 AM to 7 PM but I had breaks after and the day where I didn't have to be at the school. My current school the hours are 9-5 pm, (both Monday through Friday ) but I don't get any breaks it even for lunch, so I have to work constantly that whole time. Both of my schools have followed the salaries to the dot. It gets a little bit tricky as far the overtime pay goes. Usually the way they word the contract is that the limit is so high to begin with, that you will never reach her over time limit and never get paid overtime pay. That was understandable to me, but it just stinks because your planning time is not paid as overtime. So for example my new job has a lot of craft preparation that I have to do for my kids, and sometimes it takes a long time to cut everything out so I end up staying till six or 6:30 PM without getting paid. I would preferred to be at a hagwon in Seoul rather than a public school in the countryside.
@EmilyPetersenHomemaking
@EmilyPetersenHomemaking 8 жыл бұрын
+Amelia Basia but I know some places with gepik are still on Seouls subway line so you can easily get to the city. If you get a job at a public school in Seoul, it would be great but those jobs are quite hard to come by. Hope this helps. 😄

If ur a student how do you work to pay the rent
@EmilyPetersenHomemaking
@EmilyPetersenHomemaking 8 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how students pay their rent. I suppose their parents pay for it or they save up in advance and have a part-time job. I've met a few foreigners here who were students and working part-time at restaurants. You have to know basic Korean to be able to do that, of course. If you come to Korea as a teacher, then your school either gives you a housing allowance (like me) or they provide the housing for you.

Any advice on finding an apartment in Seoul? For example, could you recommend a real estate company? Thanks!
@EmilyPetersenHomemaking
@EmilyPetersenHomemaking 7 жыл бұрын
I can't recommend the real estate agent I used. He seemed to take advantage of foreigners since he was one of the only places who advertised in English. My recommendation would be to have a Korean person you trust help you work with finding a home. They'll have more insight and can tell if a realtor or landlord is dodgy since they can speak the language well.

It's not apartment. we called "officetel(오피스텔)" this styles house. There haven't bathtub. It's has a different from apartment. The building law of Korea is distinguished apartment and officetel.
@EmilyPetersenHomemaking
@EmilyPetersenHomemaking 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I know in Korea it's called an officetel. Officetel is a Konglish word, not an English word. It's not even in our dictionary because Koreans made the word up. Since I made the video for my friends and family back home to see where I live, they wouldn't know what the word "officetel" means if I called it that.

Oh, I understand. and I can't consider about others foreigner. maybe they can't understand word about officetel.^^ But it's a true, There has a big difference in the inner structure of apartment and officetel.
@EmilyPetersenHomemaking
@EmilyPetersenHomemaking 8 жыл бұрын
+정호일 Yeah, like I said, since I'm American and making the video for other foreigners to see, I'm going to use my native jargon. Koreans are really good taking two English words and combining them to make other words that have totally different meanings. For example, if you say "skinship" to a native English speaker, they will most likely have no idea what you are talking about unless they watch a lot of Korean dramas or something. ^^

Do you know of any websites I can search for apartments in Seoul?
@EmilyPetersenHomemaking
@EmilyPetersenHomemaking 8 жыл бұрын
I used craigslist, however realtors who speak English usually charge a higher rate I think... it felt like a "foreigner tax" to me. There aren't really any other sites that I know of. If you have a friend who speaks Korean who can look for you, they can use zigbang (직방) which is an app that allows you to filter the price and neighborhood. 😀

@EmilyPetersenHomemaking
@EmilyPetersenHomemaking 7 жыл бұрын
+Ricky van huyssteen last I heard the main thing was that you had to have a bachelors degree and be from a native English-speaking country. Sometimes the update or change the list though, so a simple Google search would probably give you the answer. It was over two years since I talked to a recruiter or looked up any information on it because once you're here you don't have to redo any of the requirements, so I might not have the most up-to-date info.

how do I rent an apartment in korea
@EmilyPetersenHomemaking
@EmilyPetersenHomemaking 8 жыл бұрын
It's a really simple process in my Experience. I just found an English speaking realtor to show me what's available and then I just signed a contract and gave the deposit. You don't necessarily have to have a realtor either. If you have a Korean friend who can help you then they can talk to the landlord directly. I had to pay realtor fees for my apartment so that kind of stunk. That was just my experience. I'm sure every landlord is a little bit different. The apartment building I live in is 15 for building with a few hundred apartments I think, so my landlord was more used to having tenants coming in and out. If you live in a smaller office till or Villa, it might be a bit harder working with the landlords if they're not used to people coming and going so often. Also I have heard of landlords discriminating against foreigners before, so apparently that's legal here. i'm not sure if it's common though; I've only heard of one person going through that.

Wow you are rich. You could rent the same size apartment for probably 500 dollars or less to the North of Hanriver.
@EmilyPetersenHomemaking
@EmilyPetersenHomemaking 8 жыл бұрын
Hey Peter thanks for watching. 😊 I'm definitely not rich. When searching for an apartment, I had no key money, which heavily limited my options since most landlords would rather have someone sign a one year lease. I didn't set out to find anything specifically in Gangnam, in fact, I wanted something north of the river closer to where I work. Since I was moving at the height of moving season, (end of February near the new school year), this was the only apartment with a loft I could find that didn't require key mine and wasn't really far away in like gyeonggido or something. Personally, the key money system is hard for me to wrap my head around because I feel like the rich can get richer and the poor get poorer with it. I'm still looking for something cheaper to move into hopefully around August when this lease expires. Wish me luck!
@user-gi2sb8xr8f
@user-gi2sb8xr8f 8 жыл бұрын

I’m leaving Korea and their racism is one of the things I hate most. I hate that I get benefits simply for the way I look. Of course that can happen in any culture, not just Korea. I want to be hired for the quality of my work ethic, not because I have blonde hair and blue eyes. I have friends who teach English here who are Latino/black. It’s easier if you have an American accent but it’s still possible. I say go for it and prove everyone wrong of their doubts about you. Use the annoying racist thins they say as a learning opportunity for them. A lot of their judgements are based on ignorance, so they need to be shown. Good luck! 💕

@EmilyPetersenHomemaking
@EmilyPetersenHomemaking 7 жыл бұрын
iamhoya3 Hi, I actually had a couple other Koreans comment the same thing, but I'll explain it again to you. 😄Since I made this video for my family and friends to view in America, I used American terminology. "Officetel" is not a real word in the English dictionary. It is a Konglish word that Korean people created. If I called my apartment an offictel, none of my friends or family would know what the heck I was talking about since it has no meaning in English. In America, pretty much any housing that it stacked inside a building can be called an apartment, no matter what the size is. We may call a smaller one a "loft apartment," but most places in America are built more spread out in houses. Ultimately this video was just made for my family to see how I'm doing in Korea, and I never ever expected it to get this many views. LOL I hope you still enjoyed it.

Why do most KZfaq bloggers have this stupid annoying background noise of a music. So annoying
@EmilyPetersenHomemaking
@EmilyPetersenHomemaking 5 жыл бұрын
gintoki sama I’m sorry to hear you dislike it. The main reason I think a lot of vloggers use this kind of music on KZfaq is because it’s royalty free. Since I just do videos for fun as a hobby and to help my family and friends back home keep up with me (and to have a way to save videos without clogging up my memory on my iPhone), I don’t consider myself a real “KZfaq vlogger” since I don’t make any money from it. Because I don’t make any money from videos, I choose not to pay for copyrighted songs. In addition to that, I actually like cute sounding music like this.
