Jimmy Cage and Deniz the Buddymeister review GANGS OF WASSEYPUR
India 2012
Directed by Anurag Kashyap
Intro/Outro Music © Deniz the Buddymeister
► Twitter: / thebuddymeister
In German we’d say:
GANGS OF WASSEYPUR ist eine beeindruckende, monumentale Chronik des Verbrechens. 320 Minuten Exzess, unzählige denkwürdige Charaktere, eine gute Dosis Spannung, ein bisschen Humor und jede Menge Verrat, Blut und Mord. Nehmt euch 5 ½ Stunden Zeit und schaut dieses Brett!

Genuine and perfect...I think they also try their best not to offend anyone and in that process, I think they really try to understand the viewers perspective to the best and so, always ends up with good points, instead of ending up fake or diplomatic... I just wish they keep doing these bold reviews, and not to be pressurized by the viewers... I think a good movie review always extends the experience of a good movie and gives it a closure finally.

I get Jimmy's point about not being able to root for any character at any point... but perhaps it's better that you are not lead to root for a rotten character, which in a gangster world, everyone is. I watched Haider sometime back and realized that I was rooting for Haider just because the story was told from him PoV. If it was told from one of the defense personnel PoV, the same story would have created a very different reaction. I believe it's easier to tell a story where everyone takes side of the protagonist, but to leave the audience balanced needs more craft.

Hi Jimmy and Buddy ...since you guys mentioned the songs and music of this movie I wanted to add that the rustic wedding song 'taar bijli se patle hamare piya' literally means why is my lover (piya) thinner than an electric (bijli) wire (taar), has deeper connotations in context to the state of Bihar which is the 'piya' or lover and that it has shrunk under poverty and the political/economic mismanagement and corruption. Another dig could be at the 'sasural-walas' or the groom side which in this case Mrs Indira Gandhi and the Congress party at the power centre in Delhi in the 70s who were making their menfolk weak. The song also calls out at our forefathers like Aara Chapra ke babu / Rajender Prasad( the first president of India , involved in the freedom movement , Loknayak / Jayaprakash Narayan who had opposed Indira Gandhi in the 70s and Bapu/Mahatma Gandhi among others, wailing out her angst and telling them her plight. The meaning of this song was not clear to me at first as I thought its a typical wedding fun song.... later I researched and found out. Just FYI a wedding song is a typical traditional song which is sung by the womenfolk in the regional dialect calling out the grooms side and abusing them for fun...weird huh ! , but the sweet voice of the singer softens the blow. Needless to say great review as expected..... will you be doing Indian web series in future? If so please review Delhi Crime Netflix.

I think the movie might have been a bit overwhelming for you guys since the story is deeply embedded into the Indian political economy and society, or more accurately, a specific problematic region of the country. The strength or weakness of the movie is that it diligently paid attention to almost all factors and phenomena of a highly complicated society, and hence so many subplots and characters. The charm of the movie is that if you watch multiple times, you discover new things and understand nuances that were missed earlier. I personally believe this is one of the films in Indian cinema that serve as a text for understanding Indian society.

Loved the review. It's one of my favourite films. My other favourite Angamaly Diaries was probably loosely inspired by this. I died laughing during the Durga washing clothes scene. At the same time the movie is brutal and realistic at times. Some cities in India are exactly as depicted. I don't think you can feel that vibe. I'm assuming Austria is much better off. Over there u may not have extremely corrupt politicians, cops, gangs and rackets intertwined in a giant web. Many people join these 'gangs' for the basic necessity of survival (ironic though 😂) Not just revenge as shown here. I agree with the score. I give it 9/10.

Loved the review, Jimmy! ❤️ I agree with some of the other comments here that you would have liked the movie even better if you could understand the language and didn't have to rely on subtitles. As an Indian, all those characters, dialogues and situations seemed very realistically portrayed to me. For me, it is the second best gangster movie, after Godfather. But I really liked how you covered all aspects of the movie. Like buddy said, the score of the movie is fantastic and am still listening to it years after the album first came out. If you want to take a little break after this 5+hour long intense marathon, may I suggest "Khosla ka Ghosla"? It is a light, but clever, comedy with amazing performances from Anupam Kher, Vinay Pathak and Ranvir Shorey. To me, it is one of the better comedy movies from India from the last decade or so. Would love to know what you think of it! 🙏 Keep up the great work, and am very glad to be a subscriber of your channel. May you guys grow leaps and bounds in the future 😊

Well, your point of not focusing on any one or two characters is right. But, the thing is. It's not the story of any character, it's the story of WASSEYPUR (the place, where it all happens). And, i don't know, if you've seen or not, but I request you to see ''পথের পাঁচালি'' (Pather Panchali) 1955. It's the greatest Indian movie of all time. And if you want to complete the trilogy, the remaining movies are: Aparajito (1956) The World Of Apu (1959)

Congrats on your 20K. You are may be the first to view GOW in its singularity. I like this movie alot.. It was very different and unique for its time. Although violence and emotions are universal... The dialect and local references hit the right note with local viewers and brought critical acclaim. Liked your honest review but the length never bothered me because the premise of the movie is intense and relatable to the society. I also liked the opening of your video with Buddymaister portraying different era trends. Couple of suggestion from my end: 1. Both of you have a very calm body language and minimal facial expression so at times it is like hearing a podcast rather than watching a video. Kindly include expressions in the video... This can be done by including character/screenshot photo whenever you are talking about it/them (you did include it in this video... But it can increased... Although not too much... Balancing is in your hands 😊). It may not necessarily be a full screen... Maybe something to place in the centre bottom. A green screen may help. 2. Also you may deliver a dialogue from the movie (which you liked) in the respective language in your video... That will Excite the viewers. Kindly watch "Anatomy of an Actor" by "Cinema beyond Entertainment". You will like it. He has also made a video on violence portrayal in GOW.

@UCIz0QggQb2ZrTlzBPiv-d-w Yes... And that's where props comes into picture.... Moving the attention from the face but not the narration. Experiment... At least the viewers will get engaged in the attempts. You do not have to do everything.. Use meme faces, written punchlines, screenshot of the character or the scene.. Effects like the one used for smoke when buddymaister came with the the Dummy cigar. Video is for expression not just for narration or verbal views.

I know what you mean :) We will try to do a little bit more and if it's just more emotional expression. But we also have to find a balance of how much time and energy goes into a single video... Quality is of course very important... but quantity is also of huge importance for KZfaq (and people ask for a lot of movies).
@YogeshKumar-cx1ue
@YogeshKumar-cx1ue 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheJimmyCage quantity should always be second importance. People are people and they are not paying any dime for requesting. Besides when you make a 1. Relevant video i. e. Topics people are interested in 2. Engaging video I.e. presentations... (Consider your each video like a movie) This way you will get more views in one video than few of your previous videos combined.... Also, going against your nature may just make the video a little cringy. Emotions and expression are great when they come natural. You May go over top Find the balance is in your hand. @@TheJimmyCage I appreciate your videos. And if you'd like there is a full documentary available on KZfaq about the making of this film. The stuff that went behind the scenes is as crazy as the film itself. Danke.!

Hey why don't you guys review web series, to start with I suggest you to see either "ASUR" available on voot or telegram or else you could react to"The forgotten army" available on Amazon prime or telegram.

I have been following your channel for a year. But this is my first comment. I have to tell you that I am very sceptical about this new trend of foreigners reacting( or should I say overreacting) to Indian content. I find those reaction channels to be prying on the Indian population who still seek western validation. So when a friend shared your review with me in Whatsapp, i berated him. But he told me to watch it and I did. I found that your reviews are genuine and it is interesting not bcoz it is coming from a person with a white skin but due to the difference in perspective that you bring. I do have to appreciate you for not going the trailer reaction route( What is there to react in a trailer, i really don't know), even though that is the easiest thing to do to raise the sub count. I hope more ppl find your channel. Kepp Going Forward. PS: Collab with good Indian Critics

Thank you so much for your comment :) It's really motivating for us to see that people who give our stuff a chance see that we are genuine movie lovers. To be honest we have thought about doing trailer reactions many times but we would feel rather weird doing it and there wouldn't be that much of a "reacton" anyway. ':D Just maybe we might consider new trailers to really highly anticipated movies (the new S.S. Rajamouli movie for example) but when it comes to old trailers... I much prefer to take the time and just watch the movie. ':D

One thing I would like to say is what is shown in movie is 100% true about India. Though in India women does not have freedom like euro women's as shown in movie are respected and are not brought in fight ever if anyone does that it is like foul and he has to submit Also Indian husbands can be killers but all fear with their wives as marriage is something different in India that's why we have lowest divorce rate. Also the violence , changing gun type , business type are incredibly real at those backward places of India of Bihar and jharkhand where I come from. Also the use of politics is accurate Thnx but it is changing

When I first watched the movie, I slept in first few minutes twice. Next attempt, I managed to watch the whole 2 parts. I remember I was intrigued but I am not sure now if I loved it then. I forgot the movie now. May be, I am starting to dislike Anurag's movies due to his apparent hypocricy on social media. But yes, there was a time...I watched all of his movies and used to wait for his next movie. Hmm..but not anymore, after I realized that his movies aren't really necessary to watch most of the times.

Foreigners might not be able to enjoy it to its fullest because of the language used. The language and the dialogues are as important as the characters in my opinion. There are no translations for some of the phrases like, "ek aad bakra dab gaya, to paaya hum khaayenge", or "kaun sanima dekhne gaye the... Beta tumse na ho paayi, lakchhan bilkul theek nahi hai", "kaa bawaaseer bana diyo be, phatt ke phlower ho gaya hai"
