I just got my first garage kit of Yowane Haku in the mail today and after taking it out of the bubble wrap, I just realized that this figure is going to be one hell of a project to paint and assemble. I also checked the pieces to see if I needed to use a glue of some sort and oh yeah. Her arm would have fallen out of the socket if I hadn't been holding it in place with my thumb. It's a good thing I haven't thrown anything away yet as I put the figure and all its components back in their bubble wrap bags and returned them back into the box they arrived in. As this is my first, I would have hoped they would have included some instructions, but such is not the case. I don't think I'm going to need to drill holes into this one as it seems rather straight forward, but then again, I am a beginner with this type of project and I'm glad I found this video to show me some paints to pick up in order to get started.

Testors Dullcote works fine with many hobby acrylics and I've used it over a decade in modelrailroading and GK building. I suspect acrylics such as Folk Arts (and similar brand), being cheaper, are more fragile than hobby paints. I would recommend people to test dullcote over their favorite brand of acrylics. It may not be cheap, it is among the most durable and best looking flat varnish out there. Thanks for the tutorial!

Hey Leona! Thought I'd tell you about a primer you might like. Humbrol makes an acrylic based spray primer that lays on quite nicely. nice and fine but not quite as thin as the mr white. Kinda reminds me a little of Tamiya primers. Covers the tiny scratches nicely and preserves minute details. I use it as a friendly option for super sculpey (doesn't eat the clay!) Just thought you might like to know!

Thanks for answering a bunch of questions I had Leona. Thinking of getting my first kit sometime this year and I have a good number of the tools needed already (brushes, clippers, files, sand paper, xacto blade, air brush/compressor, etc). But I wasn't sure about the paint. Thanks for answering my questions with this vid. :)

you can also use pinesol, leave it over night then brush it out. the downside is that it stinks for months, you can also buy those nail polish remover (acetone) with cotton or a paper towel if you want more control over it or if it is on a specific area. it works pretty good. is hard to completely get the paint off 100% but I think it would take enough for you to start over.

Interesting video. Thanks for this intro. It's worth pointing out that Testors Dullcote is notorious for yellowing white paints. It is to be used only when there are no white parts involved. Even spraying it on white plastic will cause yellowing. I've been told that enamels will not cure properly if applied to a vinyl garage kit. Can you confirm this? I actually love the smell of Testors enamel paints. Maybe because they are nostalgic for me and remind me of my childhood.

Being cost conscious you might also want to look into Dupli-Color primer. (be sure to stay away from the "high build" version for obvious reasons.) Myself and people I know have had decent luck with it on ship models, both resin and plastic. I think the last one I bought was .. $6 but it was a 320g (12oz) But it also goes on matte. If that's a consideration.

Have you tried any of the sculpting epoxies, I used to use miliput till I switched over to magic sculpt which is like 25$ for 5lb's which will last forever, also aves, and smooth on free form sculpt are all good, its much much cheaper than miliput and handles better.

Hi Leona! Thanks to your videos I’ve discovered a whole new world for my hobby! I come from 28-30mm models, using mostly Vallejo (cheaper in Spain), so I was wondering about this video’s priming section. What about Vallejo primer for these kind of kits? Thanks in advance (really glad you came back with this Thai kit video!).

I use rust-oleum american accents primer. Its not as thick and is good for plastic, it also has a top coat that I also use. Have you tried ultra-sonic cleaners yet? I recently picked up a small one and am curious if just water works or if I need something stronger to put into the machine to help clean the parts with.

Hello Leona. Awesome videos! May I ask what do you think about masking with silly putty? Is it possible to apply it after doing pastel shading? Also, could you do a quickie about sealing work and correcting mistakes when painting? Thank you!
@leonasworkshop
@leonasworkshop 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Sergio! I really never masked anything with silly putty, I know the miniature community does use it but I'm not really sure if it's safe to use on scale modeling, I've never seen anybody use it in the gk community, and I've been around for a long time. I like to mask the old fashion way, with masking tape and liquid masking, there's also liquid latex that great for irregular areas too, I feel I have more control like that instead of using the other stuff. And sure! I can do a quickie on sealing work and correcting mistakes, it's really easy though ;)

Does Mr. Masking Sol R work with acrylic? I've head that a lot of people have trouble with it stripping acrylic paint. If you've had this problem as well, what would you suggest for liquid masking with acrylics?
@leonasworkshop
@leonasworkshop 10 жыл бұрын
Mr. Masking sol R is water based so it works fine with acrylic paint, the problem with stripping might be several things, from not cleaning the kit enough to not sealing the piece correctly or a combination of both. I work mainly with acrylics and I rarely have any problems with it, if there are some green areas left, just used a moist q-tip (with water) and gently rub it off, that's what I do and it doesn't affect the paint below.

Hello Leona! This video is super helpful!! I was wondering in case of acrylic use (Tamiya or model color) is Mr Hobby Top Coat safe to use? It is not the one you show in your video for the laquers, but I could not find anything specific about its use either. Was wondering If you have tried it or heard of it. Thanks!!
@leonasworkshop
@leonasworkshop 8 жыл бұрын
I would not use mr hobby top coat for tamiya (no sure of model color, haven't used it) tamiya is solvent based acrylic, so when you apply lacquers on top, what happens is that it eats the paint below, so AVOID using lacquers on top of solvent acrylics >_

Using acrylic paints (via brush) and I want a gloss finish, like a latex look. Is there a product you could recommend? Thanks in advance! My base color is white.
@leonasworkshop
@leonasworkshop 10 жыл бұрын
it depends a lot on the type of paint your using, if you are using Tamiya or Vallejo paints I would recommend Krylon's glossy finish, adding 2 or 3 layers (letting the layers cure completely before adding the next one) will do the trick. If you're using craft paints (ceramcoat, americana, folk art, etc,) then I would recommend you use the same krylon gloss finish or you can also use Testor's glossy or "wet look" finish, testors is lacquer so using it on Tamiya or vallejo will eat the paint beneath, so to be safe, make sure to use krylon or testors depending on the paint your using :)

Hello! I saw the video already and a little bit confused since I do not have airbrush and compressor, and would use only the normal paint soft brush, is it possible? I heard it's best to use enamel for soft brushes.. is it true? Sorry if this have already been asked tons of time before, I have a bad condition with my hearing.. >
@leonasworkshop
@leonasworkshop 10 жыл бұрын
ultimetleech you can use regular brushes to paint your kits, if you're just starting it's best to use acrylic paints, using craft paints are great, you just need to thin them and apply light even layers until the color builds up on the piece you're painting.
@axoneen4369
@axoneen4369 8 жыл бұрын
Should you thin acrylic paint with water? wouldn't that cause the paint to crack over time?
@ShadierZeus
@ShadierZeus 8 жыл бұрын
you're supposed to thin acrylic paint with water, as acrylic paint is water based
@leonasworkshop
@leonasworkshop 8 жыл бұрын
+Etaliator Not all acrylic paint is thinned with water, depends a lot of on the brand, Tamiya is an acrylic paint but it's solvent based, meaning that you need to use alcohol to thin it if you don't have the tamiya brand thinner. Craft paint and other acrylic paints can be thinned with water only if it's says "water based" on the bottle.
@ShadierZeus

Ah, my experience lies with Vallejo and Citadel, so I made the assumption all acrylics were similar to those. My bad on that part.

@leonasworkshop
@leonasworkshop 8 жыл бұрын
I've seen other modelers use oil paints but not with an airbrush, it does take longer to dry and longer to build up the color, but it's possible, as far as model making, I'm not sure what you actually do, but if you see similarities between the 2 then yes.

Mousy Saint hey i know this comment is old but it's definitely possible to use oil paints on gks! I haven't done it myself but I've seen some people paint gk's using only oil paints so it's definitely possible. Of course it takes longer to dry but it looks really good so it's worth it! Also any knowledge you have can be applied to anything so why not!:D I'm still new to everything but I've been learning techniques from different hobbies like doll making and models and gks to apply them to either well gks or dolls😂 i also draw and stuff so stuff I've learned about colour theory or handling a brush will definitely help me when doing gks/dolls.😎👌

No I haven't really, I've never had the chance to do it because I don't use vallejo primers, but it should not make a difference what primer you use, if you're not sure, always do a test, get a plastic spoon and spray on the primer and then the colors to see if they have a bad reaction :)

@@azhorel To me the C111 is actually quite pale, I used the combination of C111 and C112 on my Sailor Cosmos video, the result is a paleish pink skin, I'm still filming the tutorial for the definite skin tone tutorial where I'm using both acrylics and lacquers, you might want to wait a few weeks for the first video to go up so you can see if the tones and pick one to test
