I'm an experienced painter (models, miniatures, & vinyl toys) and have been hooked on watching KZfaq Modeling, and painting tutorials, probably because I had none of this back when I started out in the early 1970's. I must say that your video was fun, straightforward, and very cheeky! Keep up the good work Leona!

Honestly, this is already so helpful. I didn't even think about lubing up some of my cheap lil airbrush. I am a good brush painter, but I *STRUGGLE* with airbrushes. Even just putting primer on shit is so hard for me. Its so good to know that the learning curve is all over the place too.

Leona, even if you think your perspective isn't wide enough to be useful, trust me, IT IS!!! I greatly appreciate your perspective on Airbrushing and all the subtopics under it. As a fellow Artist, I look to other artists who's work I appreciate and enjoy to learn about their tools and supplies, and their experiences with them. This video was extremely helpful, even to someone like me who's used an airbrush for over a year now with acrylics and alcohol inks. I look forward to your next video, whatever and whenever it may be (but I'll be extra excited the next time you do a "educational" video like this one). Keep up the great work and have a happy New Year

Thank you so much! I was gifted an airbrush last year, but I've been too afraid of breaking it to even try using it yet. Especially since I didn't know how to clean it properly. This gave me a much better idea of how these things work and how to take care of it! Update: I have everything set up and working now! I have filter cups and an airbrush stand on the way. Only problem so far is that the hose that my spray booth came with is a bit too short to reach from my desk to my window. So, I'm waiting for a new hose before I test everything with actual paint rather than just air.

Leona, I cannot thank you enough for this guide. You are amazing! I've saved up a bunch in order to buy an airbrush and compressor as well as a bunch of supplies to start doing various projects (including garage kits). I used the links to the supplies you provide on your website, which thank you for that as well, and this has come just in time as I'm now only waiting on my forbidden mustard to arrive from Japan.

To clean the acrylic paint in my airbrush I use very hot tap water that I keep in a thermos coffee mug. It works great and kind of breaks up the paint that has started to dry in the cup. This is normally my first cleaning step and it normally removes 90% of the paint. It's a trick I learned on Barbatos Rex's channel, I recommend his videos he tests entire paint lineups and tools. Thanks Leona very nice video.

Were you listening to me saying that I'm terrified of my airbrush and compressor yesterday? I've had an Iwata compressor (one of the ones with a handle tank) and Badger airbrush for about 10 years and have been too worried about using them, this video has encouraged me to buy cleaning supplies and paints and actually break my fear of them! Love watching your videos and seeing your work :)

Agree on the Chinese airbrush. I use a Master G223 I got on Amazon for $30. Its absolutely fantastic! Also, tip on thinning Tamiya; when you first open the jar fill it to the line near the lip of the jar with X-20A and now the whole jar is properly thinned and ready to spray.

Great video, thanks. Most airbrush videos on You Tube as you said are not for garage kits and boring the way most do it. With your humor and personality it's fun and learning to watch! I would love to see more videos of you form things like this, to tutorials, to anything really. Especially since the paint with me videos take a lot of time. It would be nice to have in between so we get to see more of your lovely face and sass. I personally would love to see something on masking. Especially the differences between the different types of liquid masking, how to apply and remove and such. I do a lot of hand painting and I think liquid masking could help me with a lot of the finer details but I'm lost with what to get (since you recommend a few) and where to start.

Having messed around with airbrushes (don't own any myself yet) I'll have to agree with single vs double from both of you. Trick is more what are you doing and what are you painting. If detail doesn't matter single, if it''s not having gradient work done...single. Everything else you really do need a double action. Single only works for the most basic of things granted, that does end up covering a lot which I think is why Adam said it the way he did. Another thing with doubles is there are times you only want air and a single as we know can't do that, double action always wins.

I got those USB airbrushes/mini compressors when i first started and they are kind of decent, but I only learned how to properly use it AFTER I upgraded to a decent generic one and figured out how reducing/psi ratios work (and these mini compressors usually don't go more than 20 psi) I would only recommend them if you're absolutely itching to get into the hobby right away and are low on cash, and have a basic understanding on how to keep your paints thinned appropriately, but it's not an accurate reflection on the full experience of airbrushing and its 10000000% worth just getting a decent compressor

Fantastic tutorial : ) A rare thing on YT. Just wanted to give a shout out to Harder & Steenbeck Airbrushes, they make them in Germany, so the price tends to favour them in the EU compared to Iwata. The main selling point is that they all use the same needle/nozzle/aircap from .15 to .6mm and they use a floating nozzle like the Eclipse. I have heard that the Iwata Micron has a better, more precise, point for when the paint starts flowing (compared to the Micron) , but apart from that they are really good, and easier to clean than the threaded nozzle. Also the PS290 with the trigger is also a dual action, it increases paint flow as you pull the trigger. Pistol trigger types have one small advantage, that you always start with air flowing and stop the paint before the air stops, which is good for avoiding residual paint on the needle (avoiding splatter on the next trigger pull and minimising tip dry) Loved all the recommendations, to buy a cheap model to learn on and all the other good advice.... Subscribed : )

I have been desperately trying to love my airbrush for a while and honestly I am a bit crap with it. I purchased a lower priced mid range to beginner airbrush and I was actually gifted a rather expensive airbrush too. I have been trying to learn the basics with the beginner kit I purchased which came with a compressor and few other bits, with the hopes of graduating on to the much more expensive airbrush. This video was super helpful, I just feel like I am absolutely struggling with the fundamentals and this has given me the confidence to try again. I have a number of anime kits as well as some 3D prints and even Games workshop models that I am trying to build up the confidence to paint. Going to give it another try after watching this video a couple more times and looking forward to actually trying to finish one project. Thanks for your help 🙂

I've been wanting to get into GKs for a while now (though budget and life has pretty much put a kibosh on that for now), so watching different tutorials and other paint have been really helpful in teaching about the actual hobby/craft itself. Of course, the practical application may as well be as different or difficult as anything, but most anything is and with practice you do get better. I definitely appreciated how you broke down the actual process and even provided diagrams. That being said, I did want to ask a question about how you said to practice, not just on a sheet of paper. Even if it's not on a resin piece, would you say tiny wooden dolls or even beads from say the dollar store are okay pieces to practice three-dimensional airbrushing on? So thank you for this tutorial and as always, love your commentary! It makes everything just that little bit more fun to watch and listen to!

It depends what line of Createx paint you use and what you're doing with it. The Illustration line will thin with water. I use the Wicked Detail line at 15 to 20 psi with a .15 or .18 nozzle. It boils down to proper reduction.

Hi, greetings from Germany! about the Creos PS290 16:27 I have this one and it is not a single action airbrush, it is a dual action like all the others, the difference is just the trigger, you press first for air and than you keep pushing to control the release of more or less paint, I use mostly with a flat fan cap to paint gloss clear coat on model cars. Creos do have a single action airbrush as you described, it is the PS268 and it is actually way cheaper than the PS290, thank you for the informative video!

I have an airbrush, and compressor I bought ages ago for model railroading, but they aren't exactly what I want for what I want to paint now, but looking for recs is sooooo overwhelming, because each kind of painting is different. My biggest issue these days is my hands fatigue easily, and using my airbrush can get painful with the excess pressure I have to exert. Double-action airbrushes make sense, if you use both the actions of your airbrush. When you start out, and as you suggest with a cheap chinese one, good luck controlling the amout of air that gets pumped out, along with controlling the amoun of paint. The cheap ones don't give enough of a smooth operation for it to not be a huge hassle. When I started out, I just pressed down the trigger and that's it, what mattered was the needle movement action. So if you want, get the single-action, if not - get the double-action. And Adam Savage isn't the only one who said that double-action isn't as important as people make it out to be. Ninjon made a video about testing out a cheap airbrush with an attachable compressor, and he gave the same sentiment. And these two people work in totally different scales.

Gracias por el video tan detallado, Leona!:) Thanks to watching these videos I decided to get into large scale figure painting and it's a godsend to break the monotony of 32mm figures. The trick with the chapstick, duly noted! Chef's kiss!!! The only thing I'd add is that for acrylic paint modelers, the best investment I'd recommend is an ultrasonic cleaner. Before that, the cleaning process was a pain in the ass for me. Only after buying that I started really using my airbrush for 40-50% of my workflow, and most importantly, only then I started enjoying it (because fck to have to do a manual deep clean for more than 2 color changes).

While I am not new to airbrushing. I have to agree with the whole buy the cheap one first learn how to use a airbrush before committing to a better one. I often think that people who are new to a certain part of any hobby will go and spend that big $$$ on name brand tools, use it and screw up and then get discouraged and never touch the tool again. I started off with a cheap Snap on dual action air brush, learned the in and outs of using certain paints. The. Went to a badger, learned what I didn't like about l it and then went to Paasche. I truly like the Paasche talon line, it's affordable and comes with several different needle and tip sizes. The parts are affordable to replace, and are often readily available online. Do I think its the best air brush out there? No, but it does work for what I need to do. I will eventually upgrade to something better later down the road. But for now, it works. There are plenty of options out there for lots of people to work around with. I love the videos!! Thank you for taking your time to create them for us nerds lol.
