I built super efficient shelves using simple 2x4 storage ideas. This simple project will allow you to get the most out of your garage space.
On the north side of our garage, we have very little room between the car and the wall. But there is so much valuable space being wasted here, that I designed a simple shelving method to utilize every bit of this space. And by using 2x4 lumber, I was able to keep the cost low and still provide plenty of strength for each shelf.
And with a little wood stain, the shelves really look great.
We hope this gives you valuable ideas to take advantage of every small but open space in your garage or workshop.

Great use of space. The only suggestion would be to protect the wood touching the ground so you don't get rot... maybe a leveling bolt?? Nice job

I love your builds. For those of us without table saws or routers....so helpful to see your build where other videos use more tools for rabbits & dado's & etc. For some brain reason, your designs make it easier for me to figure out exactly what modifications are needed for my specific needs and space....which makes the project completely do-able. Thank You!!🎆

Be sure to check if your garage floor slopes toward the big door. You might need to level the shelves by putting a shim under the uprights where they rest on the floor. I would paint the "feet" with water-resistant paint as well (I like Rust-Oleum even on wood!)

When I reorganize my shop this spring, you can be sure I will be using this idea. Happily I have a lot of windows, but they make some options difficult. This type of shelving will work! I also like the idea that everything is immediately visible and not lost on deeper shelves. I may consider putting a thin strip across the front to create a lip or bar on some sections. 🤔

Great video, thanks. Nothing to do with the shelving, but noticed the tennis ball hanging in the string, is that for when the windscreen touches it then you stop. If so my dad had one of those. I was a teenager, many years ago, I saw the ball and whacked over the beam it was attached to, needless to say when dad next put the car in the garage he hit the end wall, because the ball was not in the same place. Just brought back memories when I saw it.

Turning them upside down will lose a lot of space. What about a thin strip tacked on the front of shelves that need a rail?
@nnamerz
@nnamerz Жыл бұрын
@@juneritchie2498 The thin strip as a rail would work, but Brad's idea with the trough would work even better since you would actually be gaining height of usable shelf space and you wouldn't need to buy any extra material for the rail. Since each 2x4 is actually 1.5" x 3.5", building the shelves as Clinton did in the video leaves you with a 2" trough. The overall 3.5" height of each shelf takes up the same amount of space whether it's installed with the trough facing up or facing down. The only difference is that when the trough is facing down (like in the video), the 2" trough is unusable and is wasted space. But if you turn the shelves upside down (trough facing up), the trough now becomes useable and gives you 2" extra inches of space and also acts as a rail. EDIT: My apologies June. I just realized you were probably referring to the usable depth of each shelf (6.5" vs 3.5") as opposed to usable height between the shelves. To partially resolve that concern, you could probably still install a few of the shelves (trough facing up) and simply not install the 2x4 at the back (the rear "rail" that would be touching the wall). This would leave you with a usable depth of 5" for each shelf and still give you a rail. You would have a 1.5" gap at the back, but unless you were planning to put really skinny things on the shelf, that shouldn't be too much of an issue. Extra Tip: If you have a table saw, you could rip each 2x4 into 2x2's and use them as the front and back rails. This would increase usable height of each shelf and save you money on the lumber.

This is a perfect idea for sections of my garage. Regarding lips and troughs as drop stops here’s an idea. Get some quarter inch thick luan plywood cut some strips to size(length and width) and nail them on at locations where they aren’t obtrusive. This vid was a lucky find as it truly provides a relief for my shelving of small items, that I thought would organize me….😎 some may say yeah but then the rough edges will catch on clothes, cobwebs etc. Just lightly sand the edges and apply some polyurethane, prob solved.

Guy H, you and I are on the same page! The "design concept" by SLC is fine, but I personally would have built it out of 1x4 lumber. The sad part is the 2x4s probably cost only a tiny bit more than the same lengths/numbers of 1x4 because of "economies of scale" surrounding 2x4 production........hence another reason SLC went to an "overkill" solution with 2x4s.

@@jmarylastone I agree with you about overall space, but to clarify my thought, I was referring to usable width of the shelf for storage.
