I prefer to use a flap disc (60-120 grit) on the grinder. It removes less metal and seems to sharpen better than a grinding wheel.

I have been using this procedure for over ten years. It is, hands down, the quickest and easiest way to sharpen mower blades. I have used both grinding wheels and flap sanding wheels on my angle grinder to do this and both work well. Cordless angle grinders are the BOMB! Thanks for the video!

I or my boss will use a grinder wheel. I really prefer the grinding wheel. It’s very quick and you get the same results blades don’t need to be razor sharp you’re not shaving with them. You’re cutting your grass a fine sharp edge on each side will do and yes, like always check the balance of your blades. Most people forget that part.
@jerrystark3587
@jerrystark3587 11 ай бұрын
@@bobg3221 Fair point. If I have to really reshape a blade, I will start with the bench grinder and follow up with a mill file -- and check for balance. For routine touchups, I use the hand-held grinder and a flap wheel these days just because it's quick and easy. It removes minimum metal and leaves a sharp polished edge. In my opinion, a bench grinder is a great tool for sharpening mower blades IF you are a relatively experienced bench grinder user. A bench grinder can do more damage to a mower blade more quickly than any other sharpening method. With that caveat, a bench grinder with a decent wheel is a terrific (and fast) mower blade sharpening tool. However you get there, having a sharp mower blade is a good thing. 👍👍

@@gabrielteed889 I see what you’re saying. I typically use my walk behind edger all along the sidewalks because it gets a tight 90 degree edge. In a few spots I will use the string trimmer that the edger doesn’t work well in. Here’s the video if you didn’t catch it. The SECRETS To A PERFECTLY EDGED LAWN I could probably get something going for that though.

The benefit I see of avoiding shredded grass tips isn't "avoiding vunerability to disease" it's that it limits loss of water and nutrients. Imagine a bundle of straws filled with water...one gets cleanly cut across the top, the other shredded to bits across the top, which loses more water, nutrients and body mass?

Just found this channel, & iam enjoying it alot!! I have to make 2 nit picks on this video though. 1. Is there a proper way to tip the mower?🤔 2. You don't use a torque wrench to check that blade bolts are properly torqued?🤔 I plan on investing in an All american Sharpener soon, I don't have much grinder expirence @ all. Also i have like 6 blades sets to sharpen every 2 months. happens when your trying to cut lawns for a living.🤣 keep up the great work!!!
@GarageGear

Hey D! Best way to tip the mower is really form the front. Lifting the front wheels up. That how I usually do my mowers. Had to show the underside of the deck the best way though for this video! You could use a torque wrench if you wanted to. Grinders are pretty easy to use. Little practice and you’re good to go. Thanks for watching! 👍

If the blade is too sharp after sharpening it, I go ahead and file it down. I make sure it is not razor sharp and I scrape the edge to get the burr off. A lot of times, the blades are still balanced after sharpening, but I always check because they sometimes aren’t.

If this cold keeps up, we'll need a "Snow Mower" vid, JB. 🤣 I just sharpened my new and old blades this weekend (before the Arctic blast). The argument against sharpening new blades is akin to the argument that tunnel washes clean your car "just as good" as a careful hand wash. Yeah, my paint has micro-marring and ugly swirls, but it's CLEAN, right?? SMH...... If you don't care about your grass like 90% of people, then go ahead and rip off the tops with a new "dull" blade. Any and all manufactures make products for the masses (re: dullards). And that is just smart business. But, they do not take into account the true enthusiasts. Prove to me that the dull "Stock" blade is better than a sharp one for your lawn...... I'm waiting.................... If you do not regularly mow over sticks, rocks, kids toys, and small animals, and like nice grass, then listen to JB and sharpen your damn blades. :D

Not sure why people get all worked up about making something better than new? Thanks again for being a cool fan Paul!

I had to sharpen a brand new set of blades after the first mowing of a freshly unboxed mower. Seems the blades are not hardened steel so they ding/pit easily. Plastic mower with nearly pop metal blades.....is that the current generations contribution to ease our mowing burden??

NEVER sharpen new mower blades! They come factory sharpened and balanced, if you make a lawn mower blade razor sharp and hit something like a pinecone, stick or small rock you will destroy the cutting edge, i have sold thousands of blades and used many new blades on my own equipment as i own a large outdoor power equipment shop - never once have i sharpened a new blade, the blade manufacturers know what they are doing, there needs to be atleast a 1/16" "flat spot" on the cutting edge for impact reasons, a blade DOES NOT need to be razor sharp to cut grass! on a push mower the blade is spinning 3,100 RPMs or about 16,000FPM/194MPH. You never want a mower blade to cut skin and be razor sharp - trust the professionals like myself, i have plenty of videos showing you don't need to sharpen new mower blades!

Oh yeah? Tell Karl Childers that. (The Guy from "Slingblade") ;) And..... I respectfully disagree even though I understand your expertise. Their is no harm in having a sharp blade, other than maybe having to replace them more often, correct? Do the blades need to be sharp enough to shave with? No. Are the stock blades too dull to cut the grass tops so they don't yellow as JB states? Yes. The stock blades are great for 90% of homeowners who don't give a rats ass about their grass. Just like the old "scratch & swirl" tunnel car wash satisfies 90% of people who don't give a rats ass about the quality of their cars paint. And, like JB........ I have ALWAYS sharpened my new blades without any problems. But then again, I don't mow pinecones, sticks, and rocks. :)
