I tried an electric stick edger, then I tried a gas stick edger. After several years with each I found that hiring a landscaper to do all of it worked best for me!

@@GarageGear To be honest, I did wait until I was retired for several years before giving it up. By the way, your videos on snow blowers are a great source as I still do that myself. My 21 year old Toro is the last of my gas powered tools since I gave away my tractor, lawn mower and string trimmer.

@@DavidStauffacher not much David for 2 cycle models. Changing blades/string out and proper long term storage procedures but other than those no much. 4 cycle engines will need oil changes and run them on ethanol free gas!

I've wanted a walk behind for a while. Finally found one local that was used for $30 old Briggs flathead engine on it. This things older. I tell you it runs smooth and real quiet. I've got a smaller sidewalk but I also do my neighbors at times to. I am sold on walk behind edgers

Walk behind gets a laser line. I’m building a home and getting the Honda engine McClane - it’s a small front yard, but I want it to last. Cry now, spend now is my philosophy on things I use constantly. Love your channel!

I use a 20v battery B&D string trimmer for trimming and edging. It has a wheel to help keep it vertical and makes it easier to edge. I run it down the sidewalk and curbs weekly and it does a good job.

For me and my yard, a walk behind. Corner lot , sidewalk runs along the curb. So no curb hop needed. Only two very small curved sections. So I just quickly flip edge those. If you have lots of curves and you have to edge along the curb. You will be soooo much happier with a stick edger. If you've got straight lines and don't have to edge against the curb. A walk behind is great to have. Like someone else said, the tripointed blade on the walk behind is superb. It also makes it even worse on any curve too.

In Florida the sand eats the wheels away in 90 days that's all we had was stand up edgers same with stick edgers the wheel wears with sand but about 6 months Florida sells more edgers than the whole country combined 😊

Got a 1994 commercial walk behind gas Little Wonder Edger the thing is a tank. Runs great doesn’t like the balancing act at the curb at all. Starts on 2nd pull every time. Definitely need ethanol free gasoline.

I've got a Black & Decker corded edger I've been using for 20+ years. Does a nice job and very easy to handle along the curb. Lot is 75' wide and driveway is about 60' long. Done in about 15 minutes.

@@GarageGear The Milwaukee M18 with their "Quik Lok" system. I have one power head with the string trimmer, edger and pole saw attachments. They are not what I would consider to be professional replacements for gas tools, as I have hit thermal shutdown with all three attachments, but when these battery tools are used, they get used pretty hard and for Joe Homeowner, they work quite well. The Milwaukee tool has a high and low range, turtle or rabbit, with a variable speed trigger. When the motor stops, letting off on the trigger and pulling it again, generally gets the tool going again. When using the edger, putting it in the "turtle" mode or low range seems to work better for me. These tools are much lighter than their gas counter parts.

I have an echo PE-2620S. It wasnt cheap and i have enough edge to do that it is fatiguing on my back but it stores much easier than a walk behind in the garage. I only wish i had gone with the Echo Pas system before i bought both a trimmer snd edger. I guess theyll both last longer. I install hourmeters on everything and i only have about 3 hours since last year on the edger.

I started with, ( and still have ) an Echo edger attachment for my Echo trimmer, ( along with a few other attachments, too. ) Once I saw another resident in the neighborhood with a walk behind edger, I knew that would be just the ticket for most of my yard edging needs. After some researching, I bought a Troy-Bilt TBE550 walk behind edger. I love it, but as you noted in your video, it takes more effort to work along my curved entry way side walk and along the outer/narriow street edge curb. I've never used both edgers together, but that looks like the best option for the edging job here. Very good video, BTW! 👍👍

I’ve been pro walk behind edger ever since I found out about them after struggling for a couple of summers with a string trimmer. My previous house I had a shorter driveway with maybe 14 ft of side walk in front and still used my walk behind. The house I have in the country I’m still rocking my walk behind trimmer.

I grew up with wheeled edgers. I don’t have experience with stick edgers. I know that they are cheaper. Lighter. But, you’re dealing with a stick edgers a tiny 2cycle that revs fairly high and in hot weather it’s going to heat up pretty fast. So, I am not sure which is better for me.

I don’t have sidewalks on the street. I have about an average driveway. I have thought about it. And a stick edger would probably be the most cost effective option. The edger you have is probably the best period. Of the stick edgers; I’ve been debating on Stihl FS96. It’s straight shaft. And it’s a steel rod shaft. It has the 4mix engine which is a 4cycle that uses a gas/oil mix. The have a lot of torque. And don’t rev as high as a 2cycle. I’m still researching the repair records on this edger. It’s not cheap. So, I’m not a person who just runs out and buys the first thing he sees. Echo makes the best 2cycle going. I have a PB-770t blower (2023 model) which is the best one you can get. I don’t have any experience with Echo’s other products. I figure they’re right up with any other brand. I know that if I want a gasoline powered edger. Better buy it soon and buy a good one because I don’t think it will be very long before you won’t be able to get one.

I bought a new Craftsman walk behind edger back in 1999. It has a 3.8hp Tecumseh engine and I still use it every 2 weeks during the lawn growing season. It spits and sputters, replaced the carb last year and still running.

I use a Stihl FS130 with an edger head. It has a lot of power and cleans up edges easily. If I'm defining a new planting bed pulling the stick edger backwards cuts a good sharp line in the sod quickly. After I cut the edge of a new bed I switch parts and turn it into a bed redefiner... All the parts are available from Sthil. I use the redefiner to cut the trench at the edge of the bed and use a sharp shovel to remove the sod. I don't know that a walk behind edger would lend itself to such planting bed use. I don't have the Kombi... They were new when I got the FS130 and just needed at heavy duty trimmer/brush cutter at the time. Other needs developed over time so I just bought various heads for the FS130 and change them out as needed. I have string trimmer, edger, bed redefiner, various brush cutter guards and blades, and an articulating hedge clipper for the 130. I have an HT131 pole saw and an HS56 hedge clipper also. The FS130 has proven to be very versatile but many would probably find the KS131 easier to use if they need to change heads often and need that much power! Regarding the "sharp shovel," I sharpen my garden tools with a mill file... various shovels, hoes, weeding hoops, machetes, axes, hatchets, loppers, pruning shears, etc. are easy to sharpen with a file. Hand saws can be hand filed also but require more steps and tools. Sharpening grass whips is easy with a file but scythes take a very different skill set and tools! Things like mattocks and picks are done on a bench grinder. Sharp tools are safer and easier to use!

I have a multi head trimmer. Stick edger attachment for the first edge of the season then I maintain it with a string trimmer attachment.

@@GarageGear EGO multi head. EGO 765 blower for weekly maintenance. Gas mowers and Redmax 8500 backpack for the fall and spring clean up. Battery can't touch those yet... my mowers are 15-35 years old and run like the day I bought them! I was pro gas everything until I bought my house and no longer landscaped professionally. The 2 battery tools are fine for my 5500 sqft grass areas.

I think I have the same edger and basically the same situation - one side of a driveway, a very short sidewalk, and the walkway to the front door. The toughest part is the curbs, since we have sloped curbs with round tops on them so I have to balance the edger on it's two wheels closes to the blade. Works fine if I'm careful.

Echo also sells an edger attachment for their SRM straight shaft trimmers, and no I am not talking about the PAS system. It replaces the trimmer head on straight shaft trimmers but they do not recommend using it on 21.2cc trimmers as they say it may overwork the engine. That said I have been considering it for my 21.2cc SRM 2320T. It is priced about $140 and it has the all aluminum case and debris shield, not plastic like the PE 225

Stick edger that is part of a set of attachments on a 25.4cc 2-cycle power head FTW for me. The versatility of the power head being able to run the stick edger attachment (about 1x per month - use string trimmer to maintain the edge between bladed edges) and an articulating hedge trimmer attachment (about 2x per season) is a value option that has given me great ROI. My power heads are two Toro units that have 18" string trimmers that I have modified to speed feed heads as backups/loaners. These are unfortunately discontinued power heads but can be found on the secondary market along with attachments very inexpensively compared to Echo PAS and Stihl Kombi units and accessories. Are they as good? No...but for limited use by a lawn care provider or homeowner they are perfect secondary units to have in addition to a quality dedicated Echo string trimmer. Even if I had an Echo 2620X Series (25.4cc) PAS power head - it wouldn't be my daily trimmer unit for two reasons - the added weight of it as a PAS and 25cc vs say an SRM-225 for daily use AND the cost...you wouldn't want to wear that power head out any quicker than necessary. That's why I run dedicated string trimmers and keep attachment capable power heads in reserve for specialty tasks like hedges, edging, pole saw limbing, tilling, sweeping etc That's what works for me...I do agree with you JB about the efficiency of the walk behind power edger for a really long sidewalk run...maybe worth a rental at the start of the year and stick edge the remainder? Yours sure is a beauty tho!

I don't have a sidewalk and my driveway has Belgian block borders on most of it, so I just use my trimmer. BUT I do have a manual edger that is a blade with a small platform you step on attached to a hinged handle. So basically, it looks like a giant ice skate with a handle on the toe. It's a little awkward, but she cuts a nice straight line! Hard to explain, can't find a photo online to link to....

What about corded electric like the B&D edge hog? I've had mine for decades. I use it a couple times a season to cut the initial edge and then maintain it with my battery string trimmer. I will say I don't have that much to edge.

I have a corner property and a lot of edging. It’s very time consuming. I have an Ego battery power stick edger now and I can’t keep up. I need to upgrade to a walk behind gas edger….but holy smokes is the McClane expensive (750 bucks). And its hard to find a used edger. I may get the Craftsman for 275 dollars.

Nice comparison JB! I use the Ego stick edger for the first trim in spring. It does a pretty good job but is tough on your back. I also have the Worx battery (20volt) trimmer that flips and you can edge too. Actually works well and is easy on the back. (You’re welcome to borrow it to do a review if you’d like.) Nothing like a walk behind to do the edging when you have a lot to do! Sup for the weekend? Cheers my friend!

I’ve watched a woman with a machete in another country edge her whole yard. It’s not that hard guys. Stick edger might take you a little time, but you will get it done

Even though I'm not a battery power equipment fan in general, we have the Ego 3pc Multi Combo Kit which includes the edger attachment. It has a heavy duty attachment/blade and uses the same battery for the string head attachment. I don't know if it matches the torque of the 4 stroke edgers. It's blade does a good job but it's a heavy stick type that we use on our small lawn. Space for storage is an issue for us so a multi-use machine helps us conserve space.

I have a dilemma. I need to edge a half mile long street side curb that has a high volume of traffic. I have a wheeled 76cc Powermate edger that has an adjustable setting for curbs but it requires the unit to run on the street which is not feasible because of traffic running at 40 mph. I have trimmers that I can use to edge but the city spreads a sand gravel (size between bbs and peas) during the winter on the iced street and it flings up and hits me when using a trimmer. I always wear goggles and I use a face mask but still get pelted on the arms, chest and stomach and it can be really painful. I've looked at using a handheld wheeled edger, either a curved shaft or a straight shaft but both would need to have the wheel running in the grass and not on the curb because that would put me on the street which isn't safe because of high traffic volume. Any suggestions on how to edge this half mile strip.

@@miker1448 hey Mike this is a tough one! Could you hold the unit stick edger in the opposite hand, not standing in the road but on the grass and edge that way?

@@GarageGear Thank you for the response. I just got a new to me (Facebbok MP) used Husqvarna 330LK combi with a trimmer and straight shaft edger (ESA850) attachments to try and use. Your suggestion makes sense, I'll give it a try. Thank you.

@@GarageGear Made my first run with the Husqvarna 330LK with edger attachment, which turned out perfect from not getting pelted by the pea gravel. For someone that has never run an edger I did okay. Was a little worried that operating it would wear me out because it is so heavy (they sell a harness to use it, which I got in the FB mktpl buy), turns out it is much easier than flipping a string trimmer. I managed to use the lull in morning traffic from 8:30ish to 10:00ish to edge. Found out that I can operate it from the normal side with one foot on the curb and the other in the grass with the cutting blade slightly tilted to the right. One note: The 28cc engine is definitely a better alternative to the smaller edger engines, saves having to backup and recut because the engine bogs down. I'm fairly certain that by the end of the season I'll be getting the hang of operating it like a pro. Thanks for taking your time to read and respond.

@@FaithwalkerTodd those are good if the lawn is maintained. For over grown lawns those engines can struggle. They are really only as strong as the echo engine mentioned in this video.

@@GarageGear you’re right, I just tried edging my yard with one of these 29 CC units and although it can do a square cut it’s pretty weak. Trying to cut through an inch of dirt.♥️👋😁
