Thank you so much for covering this flooring. I have stall mats now in my basement gym, but I hate the off gassing. I’m already sensitive to smells and that doesn’t help. We have contemplated moving the gym from one spare room to another that is bigger. If we do, I’m going to do my best to sweet talk DH into doing Plae flooring. 😀 Thanks again for your thorough review.

I’ve got two different types of stall mats in my 2-car garage. One is the tractor supply special. The other is a puzzle piece interlocking mat. Both are the same thickness, length and width. The puzzle piece style stays together very well and hasn’t moved. The regular stall mat has shifted and I’ve got some gaps. I tried using wood spaces on the sides but I don’t have a good way to hold them all together. So far I’m happy though.

Great video! I was looking for something like this. This is closer to what I need, but might be overkill. I want to order an exercise machine into my rental apartment's living room. It's 4'x6' and about 700 lbs total. Two horse stall mats could work for this, but I'm super worried about them stinking up my entire apartment. On the other hand, I don't think a 300lb PLAE roll makes sense either! Any recommendations for my use case? (And to be clear, I live in the ground floor of a duplex (converted house basically) with concrete floors. The machine uses weight stacks and I have no intention of dropping plates or anything like that.)

I just set up a garage gym with stall mats. There are two different grades at least in Agriventures. I liked the ones that were $45 apiece. A slight pebble finish. My nearby store stored them outside and there was zero smell when installed, zero off gassing thankfully. I used Gorilla tape for the seams. No doubt what you show is a lot nicer but closer to 3-4 times the price. That said, I want what you have. Lol. But I don’t want to move heavy equipment. I have the Freemotion dual cable machine. Weighs over 1,000 pounds. Can’t imagine moving it again.

What about air ventilation? With the horse stall mats, there's usually a raised side that let's moisture vent out from underneath so there's no mold/mildew that can form. What happens underneath these floors once installed?
@GarageGymLab
@GarageGymLab Жыл бұрын
Stall mats were designed that way to allow horse urine to drain more efficiently. They can still present mold and mildew if moisture/humidity is introduced. It happened to me a few times in my last house when heavy rain would enter the garage. With the PLAE, the adhesive effectively prevents it all together because moisture simply can’t get under since it all becomes one unit with the concrete. With the tape, it’s something to consider, but it still sits very tight to the subfloor - much more so than stall mats.

If you're able to deadlift a little over 500 lbs, will this type of flooring protect your foundation over the long run? If so do I go with the Forge or Achieve option, or will they both work? Would love to be able to avoid a deadlifting platform if its not necessary.
@GarageGymLab

It’s worth noting that the Eleiko floor tiles are like $20 a square foot. So when you said these were expensive and then said $4 it didn’t phase me. That’s not very expensive most nice indoor laminate planks are in that price range. Eleiko, on the other hand, is insane. At least you can take them with you because you’re probably not passing an extra 20 per foot on to the next buyer who likely doesn’t even work out. Even though the install is harder it might be worth using the tape for that reason. You’re probably not getting your money back from a garage floor. The next guy probably wants to park in there.

My gym is not in the garage but a separate room that connects to our master bath. We’ve had stall mats in there for several years but I became tired of all of the rubber crumbs that track when leaving the gym. It was a nightmare cutting the stall mats and removing them piece by piece but I’m in the process of looking for a good solid premium replacement. However, it’s very difficult deciding because virtually everything is recycled tires (rubber crumb). I’d want to minimize off gassing of recycled tires and avoid flooring that produces a lot of loose crumb or dust.

Interesting! I was temporarily also in a bedroom-gym situation and instantly notice how prominent the crumbs can feel when being tracked around the house vs. the garage. Hey, Jesse! You can try using a self leveling concrete if you don’t mind some DIY. I’ve also seen a couple of really large platforms that people have built with fairly sophisticated graduated framing to level the top. Otherwise, you can shim your equipment, but that doesn’t help your body. You can also put your rack on the back wall so when you squat, etc… your feet aren’t uneven laterally. Regardless, as it relates to flooring like this, it won’t matter in terms of installation. My garage at the house slopes about 1/8 of an inch for every foot. Unless your garage slopes dramatically, I think you can work around it with equipment placement and possibly some small DIY with the leveling agent.

As a home remodeler hobbyist I can tell you that the cost of the cheaper option at 4 a sq ft is normal. Most flooring is in that range. The problem is that you’re not gonna see a return on that when you sell the house. People expect the kitchen to have flooring and will pay for it. The next guy probably wants to park in the garage and isn’t gonna pay you back that 3k to have the garage covered in 10 year old rubber. That’s why I would say tape it down and take it with you when you move. Remember, the stall mats stink and they still cost over a grand. At least this is a real floor option. I personally wouldn’t do this to my garage, but if I had a barn out back or something that I finished and turned into a dedicated gym or workshop it would be an option. Maybe if you live on the west coast with a CrossFit community or something where nobody parks in thier garage because snow doesn’t exist. Then you could actually sell it to the next guy.

For anyone NOT in a garage (ie in a basement) then horse stall mats aren’t beneficial. A lot of people don’t have weeks/months/years to wait for off gassing. And there is no garage door to open to help ventilate. The different texture of horse stall mats if you don’t buy them all at once can also be frustrating if you want them to match. Horse stall mats are heavy. But they also move. So now you’re stuck with gorilla tape over the seams or mending plates. With rolled flooring, it’s almost seamless. PLAE rolled flooring looks better, has no smell, has different colors, less seams and less maintenance than horse stall mats. Plus horse stall mats pricing has gone up 30% from 3-4 years ago. Maybe they were a better deal at $25-$30 per mat. But at $40-$50 per mat now you’re getting less value than before. Buy once, cry once.
