What about screws? Not the uber expensive 5kgs but the lighter much cheaper ones. They are all iron secured manually by your own strength. People use them for dumbbell handles. I have most faith in those things

Literally stopped mid video and tested my OSO mighty collar. Worked like a charm. 45 plate / 35 plate / 25 plate Jumped on it and everything. Didn’t budge. Wife saw me run out to the garage and I said “kids I have to test this! Coop told me too” Wife: who’s Coop? Me: He’s the all mighty!

Great in depth review Coop! Wish you compared the ones i own in here, the Lock-Jaw Metal collars for $45 they are super but lose some minor grip on heavy high rep deadlifts way better than my previous Iron Lab collars collars. Honestly aluminum collars are just so much better. I wonder how the Rogue USA Aluminum collars hold up on heavy high rep deadlifts, thinking of buying those.

I’ve got the rogue aluminum collars. They hold really well but may damage the bar. The aluminum lever actually contacts the barbell sleeve. I contacted rogue and they say that is by design. It chips off any coating on the sleeve and depresses the ribs on the sleeve. Maybe this doesn’t matter in the life of a barbell but it’s worth noting as it’s pretty obvious cosmetically. I sure wish rogue just made the lever with some clearance. I think after enough use/wear the lever will no longer touch the sleeve. I’ve had similar problems with the corners of the traditional Oso collars contacting the sleeve on drops. I just filed them down and now they work great. Again, seems like an easy change that could be made at the factory. The other thing to note about some of those collars is if they damage your bumper plates or not. The original Oso collars and elite collars can take chunks out of rubber plates that don’t have a larger metal center like competition style plates.

the lever contacting is most of the reason it holds tight. It causes more friction on the bar and helps keep the collar closed. Its really not easily changeable.

Thanks for the heads up. I’ve got chrome sleeves and I was worried about messing them up. Think I should go with another collar? Also, maybe this is less of a problem on the cerakote version?

koZmo .seVen That is a tough call. I guess it depends on what’s most important to you. I don’t use them anymore because I hate seeing all the little gouges in the sleeves of my barbell. The weights themselves are pretty hard on the BB though. It’s just that they don’t take the coating off. I find there are other collars that don’t lock up as tight but are sufficient for what I need. They don’t damage the bar or the weights. You kind of have to choose what is most important to you. As far as coating goes, the rogue USA aluminum collar will cut through them all.

Travis Patzkowsky Gotcha. And I meant cerakote version of the collars they put out not that long ago. I guess it wouldn’t change the angle of how the aluminum collar works. What do you use now? And what sort of lifting are you into? Maybe certain styles of lifting are a bit harsher on the collar barbell relationship? Thank you

@@kozmo7 If they changed the leverage components to some type of composite in the cerakote version I'd buy them in an instant, but I don't think they did. I currently use the Oso Cm-1 collars most of the time. When using multiple bars I use my oso elite or regular oso collars (they are pretty interchangeable). The Cm-1's don't hold nearly as well as their regular or elite collars but they are much kinder on my weights. For reference, I've got a mix of competition plates and Rogue Hg's. I do mostly crossfit style workouts. The Rogue USA collars damaged my bar with just putting them on, but the real noticeable stuff happened when I started dropping the bar, really from any height. The Oso CM-1's walk quite a bit with low weight overhead drops but I just deal with it because they put the least wear on my equipment and they are still much better than most of the collars out there. If you are not dropping weight from overhead the Oso CM1's don't budge. However, after watching this review, I've had the the lockjaw 2.0 pro/rogue HG 2.0 on my list. I think those will be the perfect mix of locking power and equipment wear and tear.

Nice review. I noticed collar locks are important safety accessories often neglected by many gyms and lifters. I had a 2 pair of self made collars, copying the Bulldog design by Ironmind many years ago. Those will scratch up the dumbell collars but it really can hold the plates in place.

Honestly, for the vast majority of home lifters, these will be all you ever need. They do wear out over time, but for the average home trainee, that will take years.

Maybe I'm the only person for whom a magnetic collar is important, but when you're switching plates it's nice to just stick the collar on the rack. If you feel the same and you're interested in the Lock-Jaw PRO 2, it comes with and without magnets. Be sure you order the right one. Last, Coop - you've been so much help!

I don't disagree with your review, but I like your #3 pick (OSO CM-1) because I'm OCD about my plates and collars looking like new for a long long time. I like the fact that the rubber inserts protrude outside the collar on the CM-1 and there's no metal on metal contact between the collar and the weight plates (or weight plate hubs/inserts). A year late but I agree, I’m anal about keeping my things nice but so far it’s almost impossible things just happen over time. Got the CM-1 collars also and they definitely move a bit at least for deadlifts. Looked into the new lock jaw flex metal collars that just came out. Same rubber that protrudes for protection but should have a similar hold to the rogue aluminums.

I have the OSO CM-1 collars. I basically just chose them over Rogue's USA Aluminum ones because I liked all the color options lol. I'm more powerlifting oriented than Olympic lifts so they're overkill for my use, but I wanted to have some nicely machined collars. I appreciate fine craftsmanship and it didn't make me broke so might as well support a good company instead of buying a $10 collar set.

Hey there Coop great stuff as always. I was going to see if you would be willing to try and do a review on the bells of steel belt squat? It looks a lot like the Titan belt squat only a lot less space needed. I would like to see a review and if it is better or equal to the Titan it is a couple hundred more dollars but to save space would be worth it to me. Thank you keep up the good work.

just picked up the Rogue HG 2.0 collar to replace my cheapo amazon collars. I like the HG 2.0s and they hold well, but kind of wish i went with the USA aluminum collars now. It looks so nice.

I agree and love my Rogue Aluminum Collars! Only thing I will say is that they do eat into the Rouge HG 2.0 bumper plates. So I need to save up and get the training or competition plates now. 😂

What do you think they would do to steel plates? Also, are you noticing wear on the sleeves of your bar? I’ve heard others say it scratches up the sleeves. Thank you.
