When my dad was in the Army, he was very left handed. So left handed he could not shoot right handed. Left handed he had a marksman's badge. On the range, the old Garand ejected shells out to the right, so when he shot left handed they would hit him in the head. He wore his helmet on the range and the shells would eject hitting his helmet and making an almost bell sound. He said his NCO knew he was on the range because he could hear the repeat of the rifle followed by the sound of the rounds hitting his helmet.

My brother owns almost a dozen of these. Last time we went to the range we brought one and he didn't warn me about "Garand thumb." All I knew about the gun was from video games, and they usually don't depict those kind of things in games. He was really disappointed that I didn't get my thumb eaten. I really enjoyed the gun though. Good heft to it.

Due to some negligence on my part and thinking it was safer to keep the bolt open while i was fiddling with my optic, my pinky had found its way into the chamber. As the gun shifted in my lap, my leg sent the bolt home and that was the first time i ever lost a finger nail. Fun times.

I've gotten Garand Thumb, and my encounter was like the last of the volunteer test subject. My Garand would bite me EVERY time, so I was going to try the Holbrook Thumb-saver, that makes the Garand bolt hold-open until the same rearward tug as the M14. Now, to explain, I was taught to place the meat of the ridge of my hand against the operating rod handle, while using the thumb to push down the clip, and my hands aren't as meaty as most my size (long, narrow fingers, great for fishing small parts out of confined, tight places, and building things like guns, bikes, and models, but not crushing strong in odd positions. But a comment on the Holbrook device may be of interest to your audience. Love the show.

Back in the 90’s I had a friend that introduced me to DCM matches. We would pay $20 and could use the rifle club’s M1 Garands, and they let us keep the spent brass and clips. But, the thing I remember the most was learning how to twist two rounds in a clip, and load it without getting my thumb slammed! The club would only let us load two rounds to “site in” before counting and scoring the rounds. Damn those were the days.

My nephew gave himself Garand FINGER. He somehow got his index finger caught in it, and it bled quite a bit. I like how you had an assembly line of dudes ready to give it the old college try.

I remember being like 10 years old and my grandpa explaining the grandthumb and how they taught him in the army how to properly load it and how they made fun of the new recruits because their thumbs were always swollen. 73 year old man slammed the clip in every time and got his thumb out of there before it chambered. Ouch. Thanks for taking one for the team. I used to have a Chinese made air rifle that was a side leaver. It has a pretty dangerous breech. There were two safety mechanisms you had to press in simultaneously to close the breech. so it was almost impossible to get pinched when you were loading it. But if somehow you did, I would imagine that it would easily break a finger. Wish I hadn't sold it. You can't get that model anymore and it was a nice conversation piece and fun to plink with.

I bought my first Garand in 1971, I was shown how to operate and clean and maintain it. I did get Garand thumb once, it did smart! I bought a Holbrook device and installed it in my Garand I have now, works great and I or my kids don't have to worry about Garand thumb.

I have fired a ton of rounds out of a M1 in competition. I have gotten Garand thumb more than once in the "heat of battle" and thought I wouldn't want to do it on purpose, and received bloodblisters, never thought it was that bad. Always loved the M1 .30 Caliber, US. The M1 Garand is one of my favorite rifles of all time.

Considered selling mine today after owning it for seven years. Then for the first time since owning it, it gave me Garand thumb. I respect that power move by the rifle and am currently buying it some nice display hooks

Shot my grandpa's M1 well over 1000 times growing up. Easily one of my fav range guns. Some people talk about getting thumbed like it'll break bone. It only happened 3 or 4 times to me and the worst one barely broke skin. I get far more injured trying to pet my cat's stomach.

My favorite part of this whole video is @6:25 where a guy who's KZfaq channel literally is Garand Thumb, and who you would think has both experience and appreciation for this weapon, loads it and you can clearly see how close he was to getting bit. Like he said you just never know lol. I like to imagine all the soldiers in active engagements getting their thumbs bit and either cussing up a storm or having to bite their lip to stay quiet.
