In this episode of my garden office build we’re putting up the walls. My garden is very narrow (just over 3m wide) so we had to install the cladding before erecting the walls as the fencing would stop us from doing this once the walls were up. We used 2x4 timber throughout and ended up screwing everything together as I don’t own a nail gun! We’ve clad the office in anthracite box profile steel cladding on three sides and on the side facing house we’ve used larch.

Have you shared your sketch up plans for this? Would be amazing to look at this if at all possible?

Hi Rich, Great videos! Thank you for posting . how did you do the corners which are so tight into the corner?

Hey Rich! Great videos. I'm in the process of planning for my second garden room build (moved house!) The last one was built in a very similar way to yours, was about 3.5x4.5m but I used very cheap cladding - wont make that mistake again! Just wondering where you bought the steel cladding from? From a few quick Googles, the ones I could find looked quite different to yours and I like your idea of doing this on the sides I can't really see!

Hey Graham, thanks! I bought mine from a company called Bushbury Cladding (www.bushburycladding.co.uk/box-profile-steel-roofing-sheets). Even though I used it on the sides I can't see, I actually really like the look of it and didn't need to hide it so much! I hope the build goes smoothly!

Hi Rich - great videos, really enjoying watching them. Did you make a cost summary video in the end?

Thanks Alex! We didn't in the end. We think it came in at about £6k (~$7.5k) but material costs have increased since!

Hi Richard. Thanks for the great video! Did you need to Leave a space for the anthracite cladding or did you just screw direct to the osb?
@richclifford4571
@richclifford4571 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Lefty! Yes, just straight into the OSB, it doesn't need an air gap like timber cladding does. I hope that helps!
@djburland
@djburland 2 жыл бұрын
Very interesting. Why didn't you insulate between the osb and cladding?
@richclifford4571
@richclifford4571 2 жыл бұрын
Hey DJB, I'm not an expert but my understanding is that adding insulation on the outside of the osb would make it not breathable which could cause issues for the timber if there's trapped moisture or water gets in. The cladding also needs an air gap so it could end up being quite deep. If you wanted to add extra insulation then you could do it on the inside. Personally I don't think extra insulation is needed though. I've used my garden office throughout the Winter and my 1,100W heater was sufficient with the 75mm PIR insulation. I hope that helps!

Great videos buddy. Curious how you managed to get the cladding on and then lift it and the walls into place? And without a continuous wrapping around of the Tyvek, have you experienced any water ingress at all? Finally, why the need for an office, do you WFH?
@richclifford4571
@richclifford4571 Жыл бұрын
Thanks Marcus! It was all done on the floor and then it took 4 of us to lift each wall up and screw them down. The hardest part was putting the corner pieces of cladding on which involved access from the back whilst the fence was still down between me and my neighbour. No water ingress to my knowledge and we've had a lot of rain recently! Yes I work from home so I'm using it for 8/9 hours 3/4 times a week. I couldn't recommend it more as a way to separate work from the house. If we ever move house I'll 100% build another one!

@@richclifford4571 ah that’s interesting, so you might have had to have made it further from the neighbour’s fence if it had still been up? I would love to work from home. I work retail/hospitality and I’m done with it!

Thanks Rich, some useful ideas there, will have to steal the idea of trapping the Tyvek in the corner rather than tape jointing it where I can't access it! Out of interest, how did you go about joining the two corrugated metal sheets at the corner where you don't have access? (ie. at 3:23). I have similar access problems on 3 out of 4 sides, so the back corners are going to be a pain in the butt! (Also, is there a special name/term for that corner piece over the corrugated metal sheets or is it just some sort of corner trim?) Thanks!
@richclifford4571
@richclifford4571 2 жыл бұрын
Hey James! Yes, that corner piece is called a barge corner flashing. It slides underneath the fascia to ensure water doesn't get in. In terms of attaching them, let's just say that some are more secure than others... Maybe you could attach the corners to the back wall before you lift it up? Good luck with the build!

@@richclifford4571 Great, thanks for that. I think I'm going to have to take a similar approach - I figure that the fences reducing access will also reduce the wind/rain that those areas will have to deal with! Yeah, that's what I was thinking, putting that barge corner flashing on before lifting, then when the next wall goes up filling the gap under it with sealant/mastic and guiding the corrugated metal into it. Cheers for your help!

Hi Rick, the wooden cladding is attached to batons and I just used a thin strip to cover the end that butts up to the steel cladding.
