Another great video. I started watching around 3 - 4 months ago when your content began during the transitional period of moving and the final days at the old courtyard, as I was in search of a local plant enthusiast on youtube. One aspect of your work that stands out to me is the presentation of before/after transformations. I'm anticipating some greenhouse content in the near future. Though, much like my own experience, once a greenhouse is filled what more can you do apart from admire? You've revamped my love for plants mainly the alocasia. Good luck with the landscaping.

@@sydneyplantguy I am cleaning out that part of the garden this week and will move the imbe and a few gloriosum cuttings out there. I have several monstera growing there and they are thriving in that spot, so it should be fine. It was quite neglected for several months, so weeding and taking out some of the plants that are there and moving them to a more appropriate part of the garden (they like full sun and are struggling there), and I'll see how they go!

Hi Jan! I just moved to Florida almost a year ago from New Jersey. The climate is very different to what I am used to and it seems very similar to what you have. Except opposite hemisphere, of course. We are just moving into spring. This winter was a big experiment to find which plants I can leave out all year, something unheard of in New Jersey. I found that most everything did ok, I just didn't get any growth. My low temp was around 4C at night much of the time, we had one frost but my plants are in a screen patio so they were fine. I have learned a little about growing tomatoes in this climate, this might apply to you as well. They grow tomatoes in winter here. They plant them in mid fall ( November), they grow very slowly, but are in full production right now. I'm sort of surprised by that because summer temps here are similar to New Jersey where tomatoes grow in summer. We get into the low 30's in summer, rarely up to 40 so cooler that you ( if you can call 90F cool....) But apparently it has something to do with the soil getting too hot, so mulching is a good idea. Oh, and don't be afraid to give that jade a good haircut, the stems will become thicker and stronger and it will branch out.
@sydneyplantguy
@sydneyplantguy 5 ай бұрын
Interesting !!! Thanks for sharing! And yes, good call on the jade haircut. I rather have some nice lush growth instead of those sprindly long branches :)

With the sheltered nature of your garden you most likely will have a few "micro-climates". I have sections of my yard that stay cooler in summer than the front area of my home. And in winter with all the trees with no leaves, my yard stays much warmer than the front of my house. With that said, if you layer your pots with some mulch and maybe even cover them with some fabric (burlap, hemp, even plastic) all your plants should be fine. Oh wait....do you get frost??? I do get frost here, but maybe you don't? If not, lucky you!! I really wish I could grow these outdoors.

I think it's hilarious that 20° in the winter sends your plants dormant and you worry about cold damage. It's an average temp for UK summers when our plants thrive 😄 My tomatoes are constantly water logged but manage fine. Just shows that it depends on what they are used to 😅
@sydneyplantguy
@sydneyplantguy 5 ай бұрын
Not worried about 20 during a sunny winter day, but 4-5 degrees at night will certainly induce some level of dormancy but yes, good point, it's also about what they are used to :) That's often the problem when people import plants from overseas.

I do have a Pallidiflorum that is giving me some berries and a Vittarifolium but I have never experienced this with their leaves. I’ve thoroughly checked for pests and have none. Is there something I’m doing wrong or need to change? There’s no leaf yellowing and no droopy leaves and the internet hasn’t been much help, so any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated. Wishing you a wonderful week ahead. 🙏🏻💫

I do nothing for it :) it just loves to grow outdoors & gets rained on. Indoors, they seem much trickier....

What size is your greenhouse? Would you go bigger if you could do it again? Thanks from Houston👏🏻!

2x3m. Given the small garden area I have available I think this is the biggest I could fit without it looking out of proportion.

It doesn’t like too much direct light and that’s the best spot I was able to find for it for now … will re-assess :)

I have to laugh when you say your winters are +4. We got to -50 with the wind this year. 😢

-50 is just not a reasonable temperature for plants or any other living organism :D how do you handle that?! I can hardly stand the thought of 4degrees coming up …
