I just wish the experts could come up with a better explanation for the colony collapse. It's really heart breaking. VA Tech and our county agent have a program to re-stock your hives, so I am back at square one too. Good luck with your hives.

If you are able to, try to leave at least a few sunflower stalks in the ground overwinter. Beneficial insects, like mason bees and lady bugs, will make homes inside the hollow stems/stalks of the plant and then next spring the beneficial insects will come out and benefit your spring gardens =).

I plan on planting some lettuce collards carrots kale spinach celery brussel sprouts cabbage and swiss chard.Alot of people dont plant again after there first crop dies I just had the extra room and I planed on trying to have tomatoes and peppers till Oct.Pruning is where you cut the bottom leaves off of a plant and sometimes could be some leaves that may be dieing or diseased.Them leaves can drain your plant energy and make it grow slow, and Im available whenever how far away are you first lol

I have 2 hives and the bees were doing fine for several years. Then 4 years ago the bees just disappeared. County Ag advisor called it colony collapse. The county has a grant now to re-establish hives but I want to know more about why the bees disappeared before I start over again. I loved my bees. They were fascinating and I was real sad when they were gone.

I guess I will have to plant some okra next year. It sounds good. We just get one crop here in Virginia but we don't burn out. Our tomatoes, peppers, melons, etc are just starting to bear and will go until frost. Sweet corn just finished, but racoons and possums got into it. Yeah, you sound country, but there's something else really relaxing about your voice. You should read books on tape or do voice overs for commercials or become a movie star!

I use free cardboard boxes off the side of the road and hay on top. I have some free hay to rake up since they cut the field right next to my garden as well. I still have to kill the weeds around the perimeter to keep the weeds from crawling over the top and sinking roots.

Yea keep them as warm as you can.You might need a heater and a cold frame. It might be hard to keep tomato plants over winter unless you can bring them inside or something.

I think we have been lucky. I saw where someone had moved and they threw all their boxes out to the road in one giant pile. Another time it was a yard sale where the fellow was getting rid of a bunch out of his garage. Craigslist sometimes has free stuff like boxes advertised.

Use 5% vinegar to get rid of your weeds before you plant your fall garden. But make sure there is nothing that you don't want to lose in the way because even though the vinegar is non toxic it will still kill anything it touches.

So few questions if you don't mind :) What will you plant for your fall garden? I didn't know you could still plant this late in the season, does it depend on where you live? Lastly (promise) what on earth is pruning? LOL The only thing I've googled so far is pest control and I saw an article about the soapy water trick. Also saw a bunch of articles about different oils you can use. Your garden looks amazing by the way, I need to borrow you for mine lol. Thanks! :)

Beans make me itch too...don't know what it is in the plant that does that. You had a great bean harvest though. I'm trying three sisters and it's going okay so far, but I didn't have grass to fight with like you did.

my roma tomatoes grew funny this year, they were determinate tomatoes, but they didnt determinate:P they just kept going and going, and the maters never sized up, got hundreds of tiny cherry sized roma tomatoes off of just 12 plants, still taste great but next year if i do them again i will be pruning them up to get bigger tomatoes, the plants were supposed to be 3-4 ft high, and ripe in 75 days they stand about 6 ft high, and we are at about 95 days and they are just starting to ripen

Another substitute I've heard of is powdered milk. Bonus if you can get a pile of it free if expiry date passed.

i think gurneys might have mixed them up, the package says VF romas (determinate), but they for sure are not, they may be small but they still have that roma shape and taste, grew them in different areas too with the same results so its definitely the seed, all in all i think i got around the same yield, just in smaller tomatoes

Thanks and yes I think they should try and figure it out and let people know.I watched some documentaries on that and I was thinking it was cause of to many hives in a very small area they just leave the hive to find a less congested place to live but Ive also heard of that happening to people with only a few hives so who knows. I cant wait to get my bee's

Grow dry beans, you let them dry on the stalks then you just pull them out from the outside row.

Ya, that's what I was thinking. I've never had so many cucumber's before in my life n none of my neighbors ate em. Most of em ended up going bad. I will definitely have to plan better next year. Now for peppers. My pepper plants did absolutely nothing, so upset because I wanted to jar em. Any trick to em?

Well I just had 3 hives and besides wild bees, the closest bee keeper to me was a few miles away and she only has one hive.... I just read that in Europe they just banned some insecticide because they say it is the cause of it. The insecticide companies fund the research at our ag colleges, so doubt if they will do anything about it in the USA...

there is this tool called a hoe. you should maybe invest in one of those next time. also as much ground as you have you can space your rows so you can run a tiller between the rows and take out a bunch of that grass. lay down some cardboard, hay or anything to block the weeds and grasses. i used weed block fabric last year around my okra and covered it with wood chips. not one single blade of grass came through. i used some this year around some of my tomatoes but not as much mulch so i have a few grasses pop through from time to time but they are so easy to pull out because their root system is not that good. of course this is 5 years after the video so you probably figured out what works well for you. i have seen a lot of gardens get taken over with grass and weeds and the thing is you have to stay on top of it. it gets out of hand pretty fast if you let it. my dad used to put down cardboard or plastic between the rows to block the weeds.it helps quite a bit.

To do 3 sisters I think timing is the thing. And, spacing. Need to space out more. Additionally, the 4 sisters may not allow you to harvest all together

LOL I'm guessing by your accent that I am way too far away lol. I will have to settle with picking your brain. I did have one carrot that grew pretty big but it looked so weird that i threw it away lol. I checked my corn the other day and there were a bunch of little black bugs inside the husks (I think that's what they're called). So disappointed, I had 5 ears of corn growing. Is it too late to dig everything up and plant something else? I really wanted watermelons or maybe cantelopes.
