Oh aren’t those Dewalt clippers awesome! My husband got those for me earlier this spring and boy did we take back our garden beds with those! I had knee surgery last year so my gardens have been neglected for a few years due to my lack of mobility. Now I’m loving my gardens again. Just a side not, someone on GA Groupies page said that their grandma cut off a finger (it got reattached) using power clippers. Everyone please be extra careful and diligent when using them!

Laura in the last recap video someone had recommended dill for the swallowtails and you mentioned they love superbena. Dill is a host plant so theyll lay their eggs on the dill! Just wanted to mention that since the kids would probably love to see the caterpillars grow and become butterflies! 💚💚 love the elderberry transformation every time!!!

I am joining the chorus to trim up the other ekderberries. It looks visually cooler to me to see that area of shade under the leaf canopy. The west border is now gorgeous. I can't believe the transformation over the years. Off topic: was the Kinzley's Ghost honeysuckle moved from along the driveway? I haven't noticed it in a while. That plant inspired my own quest to find that plant, and this year mine finally has bloomed. Thank you for making me aware of this plant.

I am so glad DeWalt made this clipper tool. Please use it for all those jobs that make your arm so sore. I’m 76 and did all that you do when I was younger and it has come back to haunt me with pain and several orthopedic surgeries as a result. But wouldn’t change a thing. My great granddaughter ( 3 yr)asked me the other day “ why you do flowers”. She paints so I told her I don’t paint good so I paint with flowers. I’m priming her robe a flower lover. While you were trimming the elderberry, I remembered something I was told years ago about pruning Japanese Maples - a butterfly should be able to fly through without touching it's wings on anything - I love the look of the tree-form shape. Of course, I think we were all thinking what will she plant underneath now in that big ole empty space !! Great video full of knowledge, encouragement, inspiration - and the joy on your face working with Benjamin, and Samantha Grace riding her bike, is priceless. I am so glad you cut that Elderberry, it was making me crazy! LOL I wasn’t seeing the separation that made the “little room” along the walkway. While it has pretty blooms during the season, it is a bully and blocks every plant/shrub nearby. It would be so much happier and look better in the South Garden. But it IS your garden, you can have whatever you like!

Ohhhh before you plant anything under the elderberry, that would be the perfect special space for a tea party for Samantha and you or her friends (or her dolls if she’s into that). Just put a picnic blanket down. Maybe her dolls would like to “climb” the elderberry. Or Benjamin may love to play there. That’s where my mind goes with spaces like that. Or she may like a little fairy garden under there. 😊 I have granddaughters about her age, so I like creating little spaces in nature for them to play. Then they’re not just around it but in it, using it. 😍

My husband bought that Dewalt pruner for me this spring- it is so wonderful! Faster and hands and forearms don't ache after a full day of cutting. Husbands are such blessings! Tip- work great on fruit trees also.

Who else breathed a sigh of relief at the end result of that elderberry? I get why you wanted to leave it for a while. Sometimes it is just nice to appreciate the natural form of a clearly happy plant, but I boy was I glad to hear you say you were going to prune it! My favorite kind of video is watching pruning and clean up. Looks neat and tidy. Also my favorite job in the garden. The result is so satisfying. The elderberry looks so much better and having the view all the way to the end of the space is lovely.

Oh Laura....thank you to Ken, Aaron or whoever puts those particular pieces of music on your videos. 🎼🎵🎺🎸 They're my favorite ones and I love listening to them...I could watch grass grow, paint dry or water evaporate if it was happening with those songs. Gives me a lift of spirit! My son got me a pair of Craftsman power clippers for Mother's day to help make trimming easier for me and wow do they ever. He knows I can't keep my hands off plants! But I have to be very careful to not cut off a finger with them. So I use it two handed as much as possible to keep both hands away from the blade.

That elderberry is gorgeous limbed up. Pruning is at the top of the list of my favorite things to do in the garden. I love limbing up and giving legs to shrubs. Gives a breath of fresh air to your long border. I vote limb up all of the elderberries. They tend to make things look overgrown in the garden.

It’s weird to think that it’s already time for a “mid-season” boost… I feel like our season has really just started with all of the weird weather we’ve had. 😉 But, there ARE some plants of mine that already do need a prune back, too. Thanks for the motivation! 🌺 🌱

Sometimes when I cut back something that the pollinators are still loving, I sheer it back but then put it in a vase and keep it outside in the shade. The pollinators go right on loving it!🐝❤

Seeing you at the base of the elderberry trimming away... made me think about when you were getting rid of all the suckers under the lilac. The whole time I'm expecting you to stop to say you got something in your eye and right there you just took that piece of whatever right out your eye. Loved the SpongeBob insert of being grossed out by you putting your garden fingers right into your eye!!! And you were happy that you didn't have to go inside.... you just kept on working!!! That tool is awesome! Hubby got me one for Christmas last year. Used it to cut back super thick blackberry vines, too!

In limited space I like my elderberry as a small multi-stem tree. That's the trick of planting as many varieties as I can in my garden. I've been pondering what flowers to plant beneath my Black Lace.
