Hello from Toronto 🇨🇦 my husband is the gardener in our home and we learn so much from your videos. I love the steady camera and no music (while you speak) because one can focus on the details - nothing annoys me more than shaky video and constant bad music - time to change the channel. @@peggyhelblingsgardenwhatyo7920 I'm just a nurse who works too much and loves beautiful gardens. I'm hopefully changing to part time soon and will love working in the yard. It will be difficult at first with all this red clay here in Texas. I've bought many plants over the years just to get too busy and they die. So this time I have to plan better and figure out a simple drip irrigation system. I think I really want to start with a Potager garden. That way I can have flowers and vegetables in one area and not spread my self too thin starting out. And can add to it. I have two acres, 3 dogs, 6 chickens, 1 rooster and a rabbit...and live alone..and 64 years young(sometimes old). I'm spread a little thin already some days when I throw grandchildren into the mix haha. I will have to zone everything..including grandchildren in order to keep up 🤣. Stay Safe and God Bless.

Thank you for the video. Gardening is my main hobby and my family aside the biggest source of happiness I have in my life. I've been feeling very blue during the winter months since that part of my day that I spend in the garden loading up on nature and greenery and happiness isn't there. I'll throw some winter sowing containers into the snow in the following days but other than that it will still be 6 weeks or more until it's time to sow on seed trays. I'm from southern Finland and the spring doesn't really begin here until April. Your video gave me happiness and hope that even though the winter feels hopelessly long at times, the time will come when there will be light and greenery and life again. Thank you for letting me tag along, watching you do your spring preparations nurtured my wilting inner gardener.

Love Lewisia, but they pose a few challenges. They HATE too much water, HATE staying wet & rot super easily. Make sure they have great drainage. To overwinter, make sure they still stay quite dry. In containers here in Spokane WA (zone 5) after many failures, I’ve learned I have to keep them under the covered area of our patio during the winter. I plant in terra cotta pots using a DIY cactus mix (50/50 of potting soil & pumice.) Was told by a succulent specialist that if growing them in the ground, add gravel to the soil and buildup the soil into a small hill, planting the lewisia on the side of the slope. Any extra water will immediately run down and away from the plant. Captain Meriwether Lewis found them during their exploration of the west (thus the name ❤️) growing from cracks in hot, dry rocky bluffs & outcroppings, etc. Thus their love of dry conditions. Lewisia are native in Laura’s Oregon State. This little video is about a breeder of lewisias: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mdKcoruG1bXKnZ8.html

Hi everyone. It is so nice to have such a great group of people interested in making the world beautiful all sharing and learning things together by watching Garden Answer everyday. A year ago I never would have thought that I could look forward to watching a video about gardening but life happens and sometimes a curve ball is thrown your way. I fell off a horse and injured my back so my physical activity has been greatly hampered. I can’t work out in the garden for super long periods but as Laura points out, just put things in manageable jobs and they aren’t overwhelming. I have taken on that philosophy and instead of feeling sorry for myself I try to keep doing things that make me happy. I never was much of a gardener because I have a great deal of shade in my yard along with clay soil, tons of rocks and tree roots everywhere I would like to plant. I will never have flowers like so many of you but I am getting better at thinking about what will grow under my circumstances. For the first time I decided to do more container gardening and planted up bulbs this winter. I noticed in this video that it looks like all the pots that were planted with bulbs were outside behind the cold frame. I thought that they had to be inside in temperatures between 30-40 degrees. Am I wrong or are those pots something different than the bulbs. In the bulb planting video Laura said they were going to be placed in the Hartley over the winter. Just curious.

At one point I think you planted guava and passion fruit trees, but I can’t remember exactly. Would you also be able to grow a little gem magnolia tree or the magnolia tree with the pink flowers in your greenhouses? Since you’ve got an olive tree growing so beautifully already, I was wondering if you could grow other warmer climate plants.

Hello from south central pa zone 6. Hard to tell if we are a or b but my grandmother brought a southern magnolia back from Virginia in 1983 and it’s still going strong in our climate. She has since passed on but this past year my uncle started seeds off her magnolia and grew them on in gallon pots and gave them as gifts. Mine is still inside and doing great, we keep our house at 65 during winter. Also there are tons of northern magnolias with the smaller pink flowers in the area. So I think both would be possible 😁

Great video. So want to get started. Here in UK all the gardening KZfaqs are doing their planning and early prepping but unless you have heated greenhouses or poly tunnels and space there is no point raising the seedlings if you have nowhere to bring them on. I typically start in late March/April. I think I am zone 8b. We don’t refer to zones much in the UK. My birthday is mid-April and it is my birthday treat to myself to spend the day sowing seeds! One of our gardening gurus, Monty Don, recommends filling the trays with compost, leaving them in a tray of water to absorb it and then sow your seeds. Looking forward to all your future projects.

I hope you can keep us updated on the progress of everything you showed today! I'm going to try my hand at winter sowing this year with the kiddos. I am excited to see your eucalyptus and the lettuce. I've never had real success at growing lettuce for some reason.

I remember that on her other channel (Garden Answer Highlights) she was answering the same question and saying something about how those seeds sometimes do not work and that if those seeds did not sprout she was going to change them for another variety of plants.

I think one of the kits was supposed to take like 4-6 weeks or something like that to even germinate. I remember it being a long time to germinate.

Like everyone else, I enjoy my morning coffee watching your informative, motivating video. That arrangement you put together for the Hartley is stunning! My morning laugh is your comment to Beverly the chicken. My first name is Beverly and I was never to fond of my name..however now that I know I share my first name with your "Beverly"..I am ok with my name😄!

To see how the studio has evolved in one year is amazing. Your vision on how you were going to utilize it last year had me lost. Thru the year I have seen your vision and love how it is working for you. It helps those of us who are new to seed growing envision our own version of a grow room or area that apples to our needs. Thank you for teaching is so much.

Loved today’s video. How fun is it to have the greenhouse this year? Must be exciting to stretch the boundaries and experiment, as it will also be when the Hartley gets up and running. Looking forward to going on these journeys with you! • Happy birthday 🎂 to Benjamin and Samantha Grace * 💚💚💚

You go, Laura! 😃 You are definitely on top of your seed starting this year. Happy growing! 🌱 I can't wait to see how your agastache grows/blooms for you. Here in my zone 5b they were underwhelming. Not even any pollinators which is the soul purpose I planted them.

Growing hardy Cactus palm yuccas pitcher plants from seed . Germination takes weeks to a year( for a few). Use heat mat helps if it's not warm enough Use LED light bulb for more light they really work well. I leave them on .Really worth the effort you get many rare. Cool hard to find plants for much less. Just takes some time and patience ! Just fun to see what happens ! Saves you money and you have extras too!

Laura you fill my void of seed planting, it's a long winter here, and watching you plant helps me, but when it is time to start seed here I have to remind myself not to plant as much as Laura does, just looks like so much fun! Thank you.

I've always shyed away from planting seeds so I'm anxious to see how they turn out! Actually I'm already trying to figure out where I can make space to try this lol! I direct planted zinia seeds for my sister last year and we were like the hermit planted a seed - they grew so easy peasy and looked beautiful lol! Live and learn (the name of the game👍)

Oh what a luxury to be working in shirtsleeves in the greenhouse in January! Future goals! Tip for packing soil: take the next empty tray (or pot as the case may be) and set it down on the fresh soil and press lightly. You will pack all of your cells at the same time. Then ad your second layer.

I should not be watching this when its just above freezing outside. You are giving me the seed starting itch, and its still a couple weeks too early here! Living vicariously through you until I can convince my husband to build me a greenhouse :)

I’m so envious of how you use bare hands to mix the soil. I find when I’m not wearing gloves I get small slivers from whatever is in the potting soil. I do use bare hands when planting straight into the ground though. Thank you for sharing all your knowledge with us, I’m so looking forward to spring and getting some things started. Have to wait for the snow to melt 😏 and I do not have a green house to start plants in. Have a wonderful day 🙂

Showed hubs the winter sowing and the seed starting towers. I have the same tower which I bought from Gardener’s Supply, after Hurricane Florence destroyed my hobby greenhouse. It was expensive but near the same price as the replacement greenhouse. This is a better option. He said…you have done all that…did you teach her? No! She taught me! Thank you Laura.

Super motivating. I am happy to see I’m following along with planting similar things in similar ways. I planted some perennial flower seeds with the winter sowing method last week. And I too have a small raised bed inside my greenhouse I plan on growing radishes and lettuces. Now I can compare my progress with yours even though I’m an 8b in Texas.
