You know we don't save money by saving seeds. We just spend it somewhere else! Saving seed, frees money to collect other seeds.

Most importantly after two or three years your seeds will have adjusted to the conditions where thay have been growen and will grow better plants. Also you can maintain seed lines that may not generaly avalable any where else.

I prefer potting up plants as they spread. The roots grow new plants easily (as you know). I'm letting my mint seed right now so I can show that option too. I have most of a mint propagation video filmed and will release it in the future.

Sweeeet! Thanks for the tips... Gives me an idea to start a couple yellow pear tomato plants in pots so if I time it right...I can throw 'em outside after my other varieties stop flowering and get a harvest of my fave tomato seeds. My tip for saving seeds, as you said about keeping the plants alive (sorry if this was mentioned): always remember to keep up your routine of spraying or checking for diseases like white powdery mildew. My mustard was so heavy with seeds and getting close to maturity then I stopped checking the leaves as I do for all my plants and one week later I discovered it COVERED in the nasty stuff. I pulled it afraid the seed may be mildewed out as well.

Thank you very much for passing on this valuable information. Over the years I've always put seed saving in the too hard basket - apart from a cucumber and bean that have come down through the family. You have inspired me to take it further. I have recently heard of tying a small permeable bag over tomato flower buds, before opening, and then hand pollinating the flowers to ensure purity of seed. I guess this is a mini version of your row cover technique.

Thank you G.S. Just an FYI. Do you remember when I got a message from my HOA about how I couldn't just leave my garden despite the fact that it wasn't producing anything? I found out my "HOA" is all my immediate (elderly) family who like spending time in my garden despite the fact that it still isn't producing much. There are a few flowers now, but they like the (thieving) birds, squirrels, and all the other pests.

Thanks. I moved one collard green to a pot in second year, put the rest in compost and have been able to successfully save the seeds.

Great video! Also note that you probably have to plant, depending on species, at least 6 healthy plants (Peas and Turnips up to 100), to collect seeds with a greater diversity. If you only collect seeds from one plant they are likely going to produce weak plants who lose their variety typical properties over the years.

in the UK if its a hybrid it has f1 after the name of the seed so its a lot easier to know what are open pollinated, grate video

Good morning Scott. Thank you for the great content. With plants such as bok choy, kale or mustard greens do you need to wait for the seed pod to turn brown to consider the seeds to be mature?

Yes, a brown pod helps signify mature seeds.

Been wondering if my bell pepper plants cross pollinated. Planted two red hot chili pepper plants and about 14 bell pepper plants... and instead of bell peppers they've all turned into jalapeños... ugh lol. I do love hot peppers though. Hard to believe someone would have switched all the tags from two different vendors, on me.

Cross pollination will not affect the fruit in the first year. It's unusual, but you probably got mis-labeled plants.

@@GardenerScott Thanks for the reply. That's what I always thought so I have been very perplexed by this. I did buy them in large trays so I guess someone may have pulled a hoax at the gardening store. Apparently I'm going to have several hundreds of hot peppers to pass around to the family. :)

There are mesh bags with a drawstring that can go over pods/flowers to collect seeds. Could pollination be controlled by hand pollinating as soon as flowere open and then covering with a mesh bag until the flower closed.

Yes, hand pollinating and covering with the mesh bag can be a controlled method.

They can, but most tomatoes pollinate themselves and cross pollination is less likely.

Hey Scott great video thanks 😁 I was wondering about ephemeral seeds, are there any food plants that can go to seed and grow those seeds for a few generations in a season? I’m just curious 😅

Thanks, Skippy. Radishes and lettuces are the closest thing to ephemeral plants in a vegetable garden. They grow quickly and then slowly produce seed. I've been able to grow three generations of radish in one season in a greenhouse.

My pak choy went to seed but the pods haven't dried to mature seeds in like 2 months. Is there a way to speed up that natural seed maturity drying process?

There isn't a way that I know of. For some plants it takes longer to seed than it does for the plant to grow to harvest.

Hi. Those first year Swiss chard n turnips that went to seed (in their first year)., would you save those seeds n plant? Would you expect the plants to be a GOOD copy or do you think you would get a weak plant with less production because it producted seeds early under unusual conditions? Admit it, there is a sunflower relative in your genes. There seems to a a sunflower in quite a few videos, or you see one leaning into the shot! Peace to you and yours

I suspect the seeds will produce strong plants, but that's why I want to save the seeds to find out for sure.

I have hybrid corn seeds that I will be growing, but I also want to harvest the seeds from the plant for next year. Can I do that?

You can, but don't expect that next year's corn will look or grow the same as the parent hybrid.

I want to collect seeds from my swiss chard plants. Will they survive outside in a zone 5 winter?

Probably not. I've tried to overwinter chard in my 5b garden and it never survived to spring. Save the seed and start again in spring.

Is there a space that is sufficient to prevent cross pollination? Is it best then to only plant one type of tomato?

Depending on the plant, 50-200 ft is recommended. I plant many different tomatoes and collect seeds from many of them.

Yes, squashes can easily cross pollinate. Staggering the planting times can help so they all aren't flowering at the same time you want to collect seeds.

@@GardenerScott if I remember correctly from a previous video of yours if I plant them in a different bed it will decrease the chances since they're a perfect flower. The bed is only 1.5' away but I can plant on the opposite side 8' away. Will that suffice?
