My birdbath is very nice, but it's a kind of ceramic. It was a gift, so needed to use it. It came with a solar panel/fountain, so I've been able to remedy the slippery problem. I added one very small and one larger clay saucers, upside down, to the center bottom of the birdbath and put the little fountain in the center of the upside down saucer. Now, it's not slippery for the birds and they enjoy a little "shower". Because there is no shade (except for a tree in the center of the yard), I add a few ice cubes several times to the bathwater when it becomes too warm. My wild birds seem to approve.

Those ceramic one's are indeed slippery! I saw a plastic one that didn't have a grip either.

I have so much budgies outside here in the Namib desert. I got a birdbath for them qnd it was too deep. 2 budgies drowned. So very important not to fill it with too much water, like he said!

Thank you. Glad you are able to control the amount of water that goes in.

I would have thought that's pretty much common sense.

I try and look for smooth, white bird baths, because that makes it much easier to tell if the water is dirty. Dark colors and mosaics are the worst for seeing dirt. Birds are the only creatures that will see these designs and I doubt they care about the design inside the BB. The crevices around an interior design inside a bowl are also the most likely place for mold to begin growing and these crevices also make it much harder to clean the bowl (If you don't care about dirty water it doesn't matter.) I also keep a tightly wound handle strainer hung-up near the bird bath and use that to clean very minute debris and birdcrap out of the birdbath between changes of the water. (I buy 3 or 4 at a time at the dollar store) I change the water at least once a day. Some species of birds like doves and sparrows will crap in the water on a regular basis. I try and remove it while it is still fresh and intact. I went to a Lowes to buy a birdbath recently and I was very surprised to see that most of them were designed very poorly in my opinion. But I guess a lot of people buying their first birdbaths are novices who are more impressed by aesthetics than the utility of the design(?) I never use my clay/pottery/cement bird baths in the winter. The constant pressure on the sides from freezing ice at night and thawing during daylight will cause these bird baths to disintegrate much sooner than they should. I'm only aware of this because it happened to a neighbor of mine. I use a heated, white, plastic bird birdbath in the winter but I don't fill it up too high because the water on the lip will freeze. I thought the heater had stopped working until realized I was filling it too high. I try an remember to turn it off and empty it at night but sometimes I forget to do this. But I live in the suburbs of Philadelphia and people in warmer climates probably don't have to worry about this. WRZ Delaware County, PA

Wow! Love your intensity. The only thing to consider within your fine argument is it's thought that a smooth surface isn't ideal because they can slip and fall. Sure it's hard to clean but the bird litigation is at a minimum : )>>>

@@ThingsGreenwithNickFederoff I'm impressed you are still responding to messages from a 5 year old video. I posted that identical message to approx 20 YT videos about birdbaths without watching them. But I just watched your video and I agree with everything you said. It's a shame that reporter didn't mic you up better so that your audio was easier to hear. I can barely hear you on my old laptop, so I had to mirror the laptop to my firestick TV. When I said "smooth", I meant, raised designs inside the bowl may look nice but they just make more places for crevices which enable bacteria to grow. Like you said, textured material is better than a sheer surface that I see some BB's use.

You have to have a fountain in your birdbath otherwise mosquitos will breed in it. Standing water is highly discouraged where I live (Arizona).
@thingsgreen4654 жыл бұрын
I agree. However, if you have an active birdbath the water won't stand for long and the birds will feed on the larvae. It's a Catch 22. Moving water is always best to keep mosquitoes from breeding.

If You're cleaning it out 2-3times a week ,what does it matter if it's under the tree ??
@ThingsGreenwithNickFederoff5 жыл бұрын
Sap from the tree could be a concern. Cleanliness is next to birdlyness...?
