I decked and shot studs in the Seattle area in the '80's. We went to Portland do a couple jobs. When it came time to start shooting studs I adjusted the timer box, the gun and the volts as the welding inspector watched. My first beam was a 6" beam, took about 10 studs. As soon as I finished the inspector ran over with a 10 lb. beater and knocked every stud off and said,"I love my job."I called him a name a welder probably should call an inspector. The welds were so good there were holes in the top flange of the beam. I told him to get a smaller hammer and hit the studs going with the beam. A good stud will ring, a bad one will make a thud sound. I don't know if he was new but I never saw him with a beater again.

hi, can you give me a quick answer. I am a steel detailer, my question is, do we need to mask top flange of beams when the roof deck is welding on it when there is no studs

I'm building a 400 sf shop...all metal this time after the wood framing burned down! Screw down rib roof decking to metal joist?...What screw to use??? Thkx guys!
