Schön endlich jemand gefunden zu haben, der sich mit dem Thema intensiv auseinandersetzt. Danke dafür! Fenix 6x würde mich interessieren - aber ich denke wird nicht so weit weg sein wie die Venu die Du getestet hast. Great analysis, Rob. Mooi werk. I can completely concure with your results. I'm using the Garmin Fenix 5 and it is very clear that the awake phases are very much underestimated or not picked up at all. It seems all is categorised as light sleep. Apart from that, I also have the idea that REM is overestimated.

Excellent video! Some much needed data on the accuracy of sleep tracking. Instant subscribe for me. :) Your experiment concurs with my anecdotal evidence (on Vivoactive 3 and now 4) that my Garmin watches have been, well, not good but decent at detecting wake-up events, but tend to believe that I pretty much always fall back asleep very quickly, even when I know I was awake for a long time (say 30+ minutes). I also note in passing that since upgrading from Vivoactive 3 to 4, the amount of deep sleep indicated by the watch seems to have increased significantly. I would be interested in your opinion/analysis of the Body Battery feature. What data does it use and is it reliable? To what extent can/should we use this number to guide decisions about the intensity or duration of workouts or physical activity? Anyway, thanks again for a wonderful video!

Interesting findings, in particular the detection of when you fell asleep and when you woke up. I’m wearing a Garmin Fenix 5 and it over states the hours of sleep. Reading or watching tv prior to going to bed are detected as being asleep. Waking up early and laying in bed are also detected as being asleep, where as my old Fitbit HR was more accurate with awake and asleep times

I own a FITBIT CHARGE 2 and a Garmin Forerunner 645. I guess the Forerunner sleep detection is similiar to the Venu? I tested both at the same time for days and I confirm your test, that the GARMIN sleep diagnostic is not as sensitive as the Fitbit especially in recognising awake states. And I know for sure that I was awake in times as the Fitbit said but Garmin not. For all other data (Sport) I prefer GARMIN, but in Sleep Data in trust more in Fitbit. That's pretty interesting, your results partly reassure my personal impressions, but i can also see that Garmins sleep tracking isn't as bad as i thought. I switched from Fitbit to Garmin for various reasons and my impression is, that FitBit sleep tracking is much better overall. Ah, well.. but i got rid of the annoying premium feature advertising. :)

I bought the Venu and would like to know how to improve accuracy. What I am saying is that when I lay down in bed it only takes a very few minutes that the watch is declaring it as light sleep. Something I've noticed with Garmin, is that it changes the sleep every time you syncronise the watch to the app, through the day. When I go back and look at my sleep from 3 days ago, it can be completely different than it was when I first looked at it when I woke up that day... I've mostly noticed that it changes my awake times, and it very ofte removes any deep sleep it managed to track. For me, polar and fitbit agree pretty well when it comes to sleep stages, while Garmin rarely reports the same reuslts as them, and the few times Garmin does agree with them, it will change it later in the day, and even a day or two later.
@ProXxXify

Garmin reanalyzes the sleep data a few hours after you are awake. The results right after you wake up are something like a draft and in a few hours, after reanalyzing, become final. It's officially stated by Garmin on their website, but I can't seem to find the page right now to give you a direct link.

Garmin´s own sleep tracking(1) has a mixed reputation even within their own fan base. I myself, an avid Garmin user since 2014, tended to ignore it before getting my Fenix 6. It rarely got both my falling asleep and my awakening right as I often lay down in bed to stream series, sometimes for hours, and stay laying in bed for about 15 to 20 minutes before getting up. (1) They began to use on-device sleep tracking licenced from First Beat starting with the Fenix 6 line up, which is way better when it comes to recognizing falling alseep and awakening

Thank you for that video! And for the whole channel for that matter. I have Garmin Vivoactive 4 and I was (impatiently) waiting for your test of Garmin sleep accuracy. I’m a little disappointed, though. I expected a bit more from Garmin. Overall, when I’m looking at the overall/total statistics, the differences are not so big in my opinion. I mean, 2% less deep sleep, 2% more awake, 7% less light, and 7% more REM I think is not so big of a difference. More than 10-15-20%... that's a big difference in my mind. I’m a bit confused about the confusion matrix :) because there are bigger differences there. And I’m not sure if the confusion matrix is more important than the overall statistics. If we compare the data from your Fitbit sleep test videos, we can see that Charge 4 overall statistics are not perfect too. It basically has (almost) the same differences as Venu SQ, but in other stages of sleep. On the other hand, the confusion matrix of Charge 4 is very good. Much better than Venu SQ. But, if we look at the results for Fitbit Sense, although it has an agreement of ~85% with Charge 4 for the total time of the sleep stages, its confusion matrix is way worse than Charge 4. It’s comparable to Venu SQ. So… I think that the accuracy of this test is very dependable on the specific model, not so much on the manufacturer as a whole. For example, Venu SQ may not have very good sleep tracking, but Vivoactive 4 (or other models) may have better. Much like Sense doesn’t have very good sleep tracking, but his “little brother” Charge 4 has. I'll be glad to hear your opinion and help me differentiate better the overall/total statistics and the confusion matrix and which is more important.
@TheQuantifiedScientist
@TheQuantifiedScientist 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tihomir! Your question is not so easy to answer. I can think of three things that are especially important: (1) Overall accuracy according to the confusion matrix (not the total percentage of each stage, but the actual percentage correct) (2) Ability to detect sleep cycles (3) Accuracy in detecting changes in the percentages of the different sleep stages/sleep depth. So, even if the total percentage of the stages is wrong, can it still detect the differences between the days. In other words, can it detect that day 1 had more deep sleep than day 2. Probably missing some things, but these are the first things that pop into my head

I was wondering, do you have any plans to do a sleep analysis with Samsung Watch.

Hi which is the best smartwatch to detect apnea? Thanks
@gldnrtrvr1
@gldnrtrvr1 3 жыл бұрын
Get a device that reads blood oxygen levels. I have apnea (over 30 years). If your blood oxygen levels are high you have no problem. A friend was diagnosed with apnea at 70! He stopped breathing 103 times an hour during his sleep study. His blood oxygen level was way low....

Did i miss the overall accuracy score % you gave for other sleep tracking tests or was it not i the video?

Hi! I switched away from always mentioning this, since I wasn't sure if this was the most clear and important thing to mention without referencing many other devices. I think I will make an overview video if different smartwatches at some point and provide details for many devices 😊

@@TheQuantifiedScientist yeah, I guess it's a flawed methed if you measure consumer device accuracy using different medical devices. Some kind of overall score based on multiple criteria would really be useful. Appreciate the content - approaching these comparisons pretty rigorously. Wish you luck with your EEG device build project!

@@TheQuantifiedScientist I've used a Garmin vivoactive HR watch for a long time. Now I want to replace it. Have Severe sleep apnea and have been compliant for over 35 years. Issue--medical treatment doesn't make me feel better. I want to understand my sleep cycles better. You and comments here have helped me. However, I need to know so much more. Comments have helped me make these decisions. 1. Garmin watch I can afford won't be adequate. I can't afford the latest and best. 2. Fitbit reportedly has better sleep information....but I need to subscribe and pay a monthly fee. I am not comfortable with that. 3. Apple watch? again a subscription is required. Will the apple watch 6 be adequate without a subscription? If so I'll buy that....

Hi Rob, for those of us who have already invested in an Oura device, would you recommend spending $129 for a Fitbit Charge 4 if our primary interest is sleep tracking? I’m thinking YES but curious if you agree. Thanks!

It would seem that Fitbit is dominating the sleep tracking market as far as non-EEG wearables go.

Hi Bill! My feeling is yes indeed. Fitbit is basically the best I have tested so far. But I will have a full polysomnography device at home soon, so even better tests are coming!
