A look at my old Garmin StreetPilot-III GPS, the various accessories and installing the latest OSM topo maps on it.
Note, you don't need to update maps all that often. Only if you have a lot of new roads or businesses opening up to make the routing information outdated, would it be necessary to update a map. I think the GPS will pop up a warning if the maps are more than a few years out of date. The other time maps would need updating would be if you need to load a different area. I generally keep one card loaded with road maps and the other one for specific trips and topo maps.
I made good use of the BlueTooth transmitter to connect the GPS to my laptop running MapSource. When you connect to the GPS unit, the MapSource program picks up your current location and shows that on the map. This makes off-road navigating a lot easier because you can zoom out much farther on the laptop display. This lets you see where you want to get to and which roads to take to get there. At that time, I was using Garmin's 100K US top map set that wasn't routeable.
It looks like the write speed for the Garmin 128MB memory card is approx. 90KB/s and the read speed is around 150KB/s via the USB Data Card Programmer. Via the RS232 serial port, you would be looking at 10-12KB/s with the 115,200 baud rate. For comparison, a decent SD card is in the 30MB/s write speed range.
Note: Reading/writing memory cards requires a 32-bit system and the MapSource program. I don't recall if I ever got this working on Windows 8. Also, when writing to the memory card, the program erases the card prior to writing the new files. So there's no "incremental" updates. This is why you should create and save a "map set" of the data you want to upload. This way, if you can open up that map set and add / subtract items in it if you want to change what's on the memory card. You can't access the memory card as a drive like you can with the newer SD card based units.

I just bought one of these for an incredibly cheap price. Thanks for the guide and here's hoping the ol' GPS still works after the week number rollover in two days!

Sounds like a good score on the unit. With up to date maps, it's fairly decent. I think this week number rollover is another media hype story. This is the 2nd time it's happened,. First time was in 1999 and since the original Colormap GPS was designed in 1998, Garmin knew all about the rollover the first time around.

Thank you for the detailed video. I noticed a few of these for sale between $20 and $40 with a memory card. I've been thinking about getting one for a few reasons. For one Maps fries the battery of my phone, and 2 I have a 96 Buick Roadmaster and I feel an old school GPS system would look a lot more fitting than a mounted iPhone.

They are a fairly decent GPS with some limitations. For car use, see if you can also find the external antenna. I have that in both my vehicles, roof mounted antenna with a coax cable to connect to the back of the unit. I'm currently trying the OpenMapChest US map download and apparently that can load into the old MapSource program which you need to load maps onto the GPS or memory card. You'll want to make sure you get the memory card adapter and/or the serial port adapter for the unit. For the card adapter, you need to use a 32-bit Windows PC or maybe they have a Mac version of MapSource.

Why are these so popular still? They are selling for good $ still on ebay. Pretty impressive

Not sure, but they still work and are not bad to use. I'm still looking for a decent set of modern road maps to install on mine that'll fit in the limited memory.

I personally sought one out, because they are much more durable and high quality than any newer Garmin I've used. I have a Nuvi from 2011 and another from 2016. Compared to the streetpilot they are actually slower and buggy and leave some things to be desired when it comes to their basic functions. The prompts and info displayed on the streetpilot is perfect, it constantly scales the map during route instructions to make it easier to see where your next turn will be. The screen is also easier to see in direct sunlight. Overall, I think the new garmins are trying to compete with cellphones and be a jack of all trades, while the streetpilot is a master of one thing NAVIGATION.

Does the location of the external antenna differs from car to car? I have a 2002 Toyota Camry and I am thinking of getting one of these for my car, not only because of the time era but so I can use this instead of the phone to lessen distractions.

The external antenna can be placed anywhere you want as far as I recall. Just needs to have a good "view" of the sky for best reception.

Hello i recently bought a full SP 3 box set for cheap (guy probably had no idea what he was selling) and i have an issue with my 128 memory card,how can i remove the maps from data card, it's full and maps are from a different country? I got the usb programmer working (after a lot of driver squabble) so i think it would be doable for me. Thanks in advance!

If you check the video at 09:34, you'll see that MapSource will erase the memory card prior to uploading the new files.

@@The4Crawler dang,i used the basecamp and it tried to install them but complained about memory,mapsource on my win 7 vm on the other hand doesn't recognize my maps even if it did on win 11,welp imma continue trying

@@EdwardKartov I've never tried running Mapsource on a VM. I keep my old un-upgradeable XP laptop around for these sorts of things.

@@The4Crawler Funny enough,my old xp laptop spit out the drivers,my jobs win 7 on the other hand did work with them.That's how i discovered win 7 works the best for me.But im suspecting my data card may be busted,base camp is spitting "insert the card" prompt even when it's in although maps on the card (from france btw) are still working fine.

@@EdwardKartov Not sure I've ever used Basecamp with the card programmer. On my XP laptop, Basecamp doesn't even see the programmer device. The other issue is that I think Basecamp doesn't allow the fine tile level map selection like Mapsource does. With modern-ish maps, they quickly fill that 128MB card, so I find I need to carefully select portions of larger maps to just fit onto the card.

Follow the leader...with old or new maps...odds are you get picked "leader of the pack" all the time...companions vote you before you can say "lone wolf"...end up where you were headed...smart follow to end up in the right place...although being "lost" in wide open country isn't all that bad...especially under a blanket of stars...long rides make me wonder how pioneers traveled the wilderness...♀ One thing leads to another...like a road on a map...Oregon trail to Santa Fe trail to Donner Party to plane crash in the Andes...should have followed the gold rush or Rubicone instead of kuru...started with a fast bike ride video, to geocache, to maps, to pioneers...think my kitty's curiosity is contagious...doesn't help being easily side tracked...happens without a "map"

Yes, those pioneers in the 1800s were something else. Heading off across the country with a few hand written notes and sketched maps. So far, pretty impressed with these OSM maps. They have a surprising amount of information in town like up to data business locations, etc. It's nice having a map that has both the city information as well as all the hiking and biking trails out in the mountains. No need to keep switching between different maps all the time.

I just bought one of these for about $4 from a local thrift shop I want to make it up to a motorcycle GPS mainly because of the button that how much easier would be to use with gloves on. Plus I feel cool be a fun little project to get it to work again
@The4Crawler
@The4Crawler 5 жыл бұрын
Good score, they run around $80 on eBay. Should make a good motorcycle GPS. Hopefully you got a memory card with it. You should be able to streamline the power cable and speaker setup for the motorcycle. I made custom mounts for the unit in my two vehicles. In my VW, I fit it into the center console and had a hardwired power connector and a built-in speaker as well. I would slide the GPS into the housing and then that slid into the bottom of the center console that housing was held in place with magnets. The big tip with the unit is to upload destination way points into it, it's very clunky trying to use the built-in search function to find an address. For pre-loaded points of interest, it's OK but or addresses it's a PITA.
