Thanks for your video, I've wired a few the zumos onto bikes, I always find it easier to not connect the power cable to the hub with the little screw until last, because its easier to run it down the bike. also, you can put an online switch near the bars, if you don't want to wire it into the headlight, or an sae connector, online, and just disconnect it. I do this, so I can plug my optimste into the same connector

Really impressed thank you for your time & sharing your experience. Watching you feed the power lead plug through the backing plate & fixing with a small screw was exactly what I needed to answer all the questions I had in my head about hard wiring the XT. I had read somewhere Garmin don't recommend a USB cable (something to do with lack of power resulting in corrosion) Also means I dont need to buy separate mounting kit given whats in the box, so Huge Thanks, you've saved me wasting money buying stuff I didn't need & shown me its not rocket science.

From all the installation videos I'v viewed thus far; wiggling the harness through tight spots with that fuse block is quite a task. I can say with practicality that I will be installing the wire harness on the bike first (feeding the mounting end through); then complete the harness to mount installation.

This is a fantastic piece of advice. I had to use this method because of the location of my fuse block!

Just a tip. When installing the little tiny screw, the kit comes with a screwdriver and a tiny plastic sleeve over the end. Utilize this plastic sleeve as a screw holder. Just slide it halfway down the screwdriver and install the screw into the open end with cross towards the driver bit and feed into the screw hole and as you apply pressure the screwdriver bit and screw head engage as you turn screw driver and apply pressure into the hole.

Nice Video! But you installed the little black spacers in the wrong way in the mounting-cradle. They must be installed in the back side of the cradle and then the washers with the screws in the front side. Otherwise the can't do the job to decouple the cradle because the spacers will slip into the holes of your SW-Motech or RamMount plate.

@polgeurts7279
@polgeurts7279 4 жыл бұрын
It is better to mount the cable in the holder after you have installed the cable on your motorcycle, because suppose you have to push the cable through a small opening, then the mount gets in the way, and you have to disassemble it

What is the little black box on the power cable? Is it just a fuse or a 12 to 5v power adapter?
@TourmotoDesign
@TourmotoDesign 4 жыл бұрын
Bob L that is an electronic fuse. If that box senses a short it will open the circuit like a fuse and then reset itself when the problem is fixed. No need to replace fuses.

@@TourmotoDesign OK thanks. A follow up. My XT stopped receiving power from the mount. I verified +12V on the pins on the mount. If I insert the GPS into the mount, it doesn't power on. If I manually power it on, the battery does'nt indicate charging. I reported this to Garmin. They said they found a problem with the mount and have re-engineered it. They sent me new one free. Now device DOES power on when connected to 12V, but still the battery doesnt charge from the mount. It does charge from the USB. XT going back to Garmin now.

Interesting comment about using a switched power source, but if you connect it directly to the battery how could that leave you stranded? For the price I paid for the Zumo XT I won't be leaving it on the handlebars when I walk away.
@stogierogy
@stogierogy 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly the same reason I am going to hook mine directly to the battery. I am NEVER going to leave a 500 dollar unit on my bike when I am not there. It will be locked in my top case or brought with me if I don't have that option.
@markmckell8817
@markmckell8817 3 жыл бұрын
@@stogierogy Wiring it directly to the battery means it will be powered with the bike off. This can drain your battery 'and leave you stranded' ie - flat battery. Wire it to a 'switched' supply means that power is isolated from the GPS when you turn the ignition off.

@@markmckell8817 How is it drawing power if the gps is not on the bike?
@markmckell8817
@markmckell8817 3 жыл бұрын
@@stogierogy well, obviously it’s not. What the video is implying, is fitting the unit to switched power. Not wired to the battery. The unit can still be removed from its cradle. I get what you are getting at though. When you walk away from the bike, you always will be taking it with you, so it does not matter if it’s wired to a switched or non switched supply. I only commented originally as I once camped and had no need to remove the GPS from the bike as I was isolated and sleeping right next to my bike. What I did do, is drape my jacket over my handle bar area (including the GPS) and did not realise I left it on. Until the next morning when I had a flat battery. I had mine wired directly to the battery. I don’t anymore!

Is the black box in the power cable strictly a fuse, or does it also handle voltage regulation? Thanks. Cheers!
@TourmotoDesign
@TourmotoDesign 4 жыл бұрын
Clammy69 it’s a self resetting circuit breaker. I don’t know for sure but I would think it also drops the voltage from 12 to 5 to power the unit.

Can it be charged via USB instead?
@TourmotoDesign

Yes. That works for charging when it’s off the bike but it’s not a good solution for charging when it’s on the bike because then you have the USB port cover open and that makes the unit vulnerable to water.

BEWARE! my new kit came with the wrong hardware and I mean it was way wrong. Supposed to have 4 spacers, had none, 2/4 washers, and had 4 super long screws (black) instead of correct fasteners... crazy, never saw anything like this as far as scope of mess up and don't get me started on how much this cost for this level of attention to detail. I am heading out on a trip and had planned to do valve check, plugs, coolant, air filter, oil, GPS and heated grips today, this threw a small wrench in that... So much for mounting according to instructions.. ended up tapping the mounting bracket metal and running those long screws in and cutting the extra 1.5" off lol WTH Garmin? Works well now and everything will be fine and and looks good.

I had an issue with missing hardware in my Zumo xt as well. I sent garmin an email and they sent me a whole mounting kit with another cradle. It’s definitely annoying and should not happen but, in my experience, garmin will make it right. I know that doesn’t help you right this minute but you might want to send them a message.
